His voice was at it's absolute peak in the '90s! And live recordings like these are actually better than studio songs in my opinion! His voice did go around 2006 tho, but he was getting old at that point. Mind you Merle Haggard kept his voice until the day he died! George will forever be nr. 1 to me!

I think this was the best version of the possum! He was literally in his prime here an not only that but I think this was around the time that he had been sober for a good 5 or 10 years! Imagine how good he would have been had he been sober his whole career! His alcohol addiction definetly held him back!! I think George Jones is the greatest comeback story in all of country! I think that at this point in Jones's life- in his late 60's he had MASTERED his talent. I heard around the year 2002 he tore one of his vocal chords and never recovered because he wouldnt take time off the road as the doctor reccomended. But, in my personal opinion, Jones is one of the most talented singers ever to walk this planet

KLUNKET couldn't agree with you more. The 'connaisseurs' always state that Possum's best works were in the fifties and sixties. I disovered George Jones at an older age and with that learned to appreciate his earlier stuff as well. However, his vocal range really peaked at an age were most great singers would've lost the cutting edge of their younger years.

I think it was earlier than '02. Listen to his album The Rock:Stone Cold Country and you can tell it was weakened by then. Might've been complications from the wreck in '99.

I'm the same way every darn time Iisten to this... it's like the man performs surgery with words... or like his throat has a foot pedal in it or something. You know, I have seen Jones in concert more than a dozen times, and (some may argue) but I think he was at his best in the 1990's. I seen shows during that time where he got a standing ovation after nearly every song, and people never even sat down for the last 3 or 4 songs of the show. He was ALWAYS perfect though. Just love the ol' Possum

Vocal perfefection right there, I think he was at the top of his game at this time, using his lower voice tones like he never had before. The vocal chord theory makes sense, I remember seeing him on the opry back around 2002 or so, and noticed he had lost something. I actually heard him recently, and I thought he sounds better now than he did 2 years ago. None the less, he's still awesome at 80!!
