I can see the expectation of love in Alia's eyes when she first saw her mother after many years. She expected her mother to show real affection to her. Then her eyes turned darker when she sensed that Lady Jessica only focused on her grand children. Poor Alia!

Princess Irulan was a tragic character. Manipulated and not strong enough without her father she redeemed herself after causing Chani's death by becoming a very loving and caring mother surrogate to Leto and Ghanima.

I tell you what is the saddest part of this clip. Alia gets her cuddle, but almost instantly realises her mother's attention has already switched to that of the twins from the tiny move of the head, and you can see her expression fall. Some jealousy, but aw, Jessica, let her have a proper cuddle.

If you'd read the books the sad truth is Alia's paranoia is true Jessica was there as a BeneGesserit Rev to JUDGE her preborn offspring(superficial hug to daughter, wrote her off already & focused on the Twins) & try gain control again of their genetic material thru future mating(but it was ALIA's CHOICE to give into her family enemy Baron spirit was HER bad need for power control CHOICE not a victim, there were MANY others to help control her multivoices)

@@klyanadkmorrI disagree. Paul abandoned everyone in his grief, Jessica did the same and the twins were infants. In her attempt to control the empire she dove into the spice trance over and over seeking prescience. What she got instead was possession. Too me her story is about a teenage girl overly burdened with responsibility and to cope she does drugs that result in an overdose. Her story is a tragedy and I don't think she's truly the villain.

@3:35 Great acting. Alia at first is genuinely happy to see her mum and hugs her but as she does, she senses that Jessica is looking at the twins. Her features stiffen as she realizes that her mother doesn't really care about her (never has)... she is only interested in the twins.

@mnomadvfx
@mnomadvfx 4 жыл бұрын
Complex is hardly the word for it. Willful would be more accurate - it wasn't complexity that led her to disobey her mandate from the Bene Gesserit and have Paul instead of a daughter, there has never been any indication of any great master plan or like from Jessica on that score, just that she simply decided that would be the way it would be. Not to mention if Yueh wasn't the man he was then he would have left nothing for them to escape with - despite the betrayal he did still have hopes that Paul would survive and avenge his fathers death.

Hardstrong Jessica loved her Duke...Aware of the ruthlessness of Leto as well. Plans within plans...Jessica had plans beyond being Leto’s Royal bedmate. The books cover this in depth.
@marysueeasteregg
@marysueeasteregg 4 жыл бұрын
@@gentleraine480 Can you explain something to me I've never understood? I understand (at least I thought I did) Jessica choosing to give Leto a son. But why did she wait 15 years to have the daughter? Oh, I know what is said in Dune in her own reflections, that the threat of death prompted in her the urge to reproduce. That, too, is understandable. But she had had 15 years to give the Bene Gesserit the female offspring they wanted from her. Why not a daughter much earlier after the son?
@christianealshut1123
@christianealshut1123 3 жыл бұрын
It was not just that Jessica was to give Duke Leto ONE daughter; she was ordered to bear him ONLY daughters - just as Irulan's mother did and obeyed. And Jessica had defied them by giving Duke Leto the son he desired because she had fallen in love with him. But very likely, she felt ambivalent about what she did, and at any rate by the time she had disobeyed the order, she was as good as a renegade as far as the BG were concerned and not even bearing a daughter immediately after that could have amended for her transgression. Even more so, this daughter would also be tainted by her mother's defiance. Jessica might have felt guilty after that and refrained from intercourse with the Duke, or more likely changed her body processes so that she wouldn't conceive a child while doing so. Interestingly, Alia initially is a child of love just as much as her brother Paul is, conceived in a moment of passion between her parents (where Jessica very likely had her guard down and did not take any precautions). I think the excuse the Bene Gesserit wanted a girl for a diplomatic marriage to the Harkonnen heir does not fly as far as I am concerned. They could easily have had that by ordering Jessica to bear at least one daughter and they still could have bred that daughter with Feyd and they would not have lost the bloodline - never mind that this would have been incest from two sides. All the more so, that argument does not fly because the union between Jessica and Duke Leto already WOULD have been the union between the two houses that they desired, as Jessica is the daughter of Baron Valdimir Harkonnen and so carries the bloodline within her. I know that Jessica's parentage was officially unknown but with the power base that they had, the BG could easily have changed that and presented Jessica as a Harkonnen daughter. I think the true reason for Jessica being ordered to bear only daughters is that the BG knew that if she bore a son, he would likely be the Kwisatz Haderach they desired but one generation too early and very likely uncontrollable to them. What is more, they must at least have acknowledged the liklihood of this happening several generations before Jessica was even born, as they sent their Missionaria Protectiva to Arrakis, planting the Legend of a Bene Gesserit and her son as the saviors of the Fremen. They feared the Kwisatz Haderach coming one generation too early not because he would be the wrong mix of bloodlines (and Paul wasn't); they feared him because he would set the events in motion that would finally unseat them from their power. (All the same, they built a few failsafes into their plan)

Yes, but Alia does not say this to give credit to Jessica for the existenceof the twins, but to put the twins on guard. Also, as Alia said, Jessica is complex, but not in the way Alia implies. Jessica conceived Paul against the bidding of Bene Gezerit out of love for her Duke. This is not a lowly motive and actually suggests that she places love and family above Bene Gezerit. Jessica wants to test the twins for abomination, but any sane person would have tp do the same out of duty to humanity. Alia here implies that Jessica doesn't distinguish between preborn and abomination, which is a lie and manipulation. For anyone reading between the lines of Alia's warnings, it is clear that she has already moved to the dark side.

@@dr_rune It's nuanced. Jessica had no idea what would happen in the water of life. She had no idea what might befall her unborn daughter. She was an acolyte, not a BG reverend mother. She was a cog in the bloodline, who took a chance with a son, to please her Duke. The water of life was a near-death experience for all adepts, so surviving it was first priority. Perhaps she might have killed her daughter to spare her trauma, but the 'woke' direction dared not grasp that issue. P'raps Paul was to blame? Apart from ducking the 'Terrible Purpose' fate which then fell to Leto 2, Paul must've foreseen what a brat Alia would become..but then maybe her prescience blocked his..he certainly didn't forsee twins. People mock SyFy adaptation of Dune. Saying it’s a high school play. It’s unwatchable. Production quality is horrible. Those same people don’t care that it’s the most book accurate adaptation of Dune. They compare it to a massive, big budget production quality of the new Dune movies. A product that is masterfully made films but took artistic freedom to change so many parts of the book. I appreciate the new Dune movies for what they are. But this miniseries I hold with more appreciation for staying true to the novels more so than any other.

I call the new movies 'Dune Wars'. It throws away all the political rivalries, the manipulations of religious prophesies, the 'plans within plans' and turns it into, 'Young boy grows up and saves the universe from the evil empire'. I hold the SyFy series to the best adaptation. Even though the special effects were limited it still tells the best story and holds true to the books.

@@roywhittle1 The political rivalries and scheming subplots just weren't all that important to Dune in the long run. The religious and messianic aspects are very obviously there in Villeneuve's adaptations, and Paul very much not depicted as "Luke Skywalker". I think Villeneuve placed the correct emphasis on the Nietzschean Übermensch rising up to the occasion, despite knowing the consequences, to lead a people filled with furious life and faith to overcome all the rivalries and schemers. The real planners that matter are the more esoteric and fringe groups anyway. These things become even more important in the later books, where any further plots (like against Leto II) are just means to further things along for new panels of the big picture.

I completely agree. I didn't even read that far into the books yet and I can already see that this series showcases more of the character's personalities and emotional turmoil/character development better than the movies did. Granted, a tv series has more time to flesh out everything but the recent movies left out key plotlines that are essential to the characters and their stories

ITA!! The Synergy and chemistry acting in harmony between James as Leto and Jennifer Brooks/Ghanima is Electric plus the Soundtrack makes this a Very excellent entry into Dune reproductions in visual media film/TV. My negatives are that weirdly Mcavoy & Brooks look more like children of Lynch's DUNE Paul & Chani, thus I reversely watched the Syfy Dune and could not stand the actor for Paul Atreides. The next is the Lynch actress then the Syfy DUNE series woman who was only hired because Alice couldn't schedule to do the first series, the last & LEAST Jessica actress is Dune 2021 Rebecca Furgeson, 1st because she mocked even reading the book and dismissed the females & Bene Gesserit never reading the book as MISOGYNIST! That damned her in my eyes and all WB PR has shut her up since. Then Denis directs her to play Jessica as endlessly crying like a weak mouse in private as if that makes her a twue woman. As a 80's feminist I despise such regressive thinking posing as better progressive modern.

One amusing thing I always love about Jessica, this Regal and sophisticated aristocratic presence, is that she has the ability to utterly kick the ass of any of the Fremen (or their enemies). In the books, Stilgar initially worries that she’ll simply take over Fremen society by simply killing all the Naibs in single combat, which she could have easily.

Yes, but there is still a discrepancy - as if they lavished a lot of production value of the big stars who were playing the lead roles, and then started scrimping and pinching on the others. And the costume choices are still a little off - when Jessica arrives on Arrakis, a very hot planet, she is clad in a costume that features FUR. OK, she is coming from Caladan, a very water-rich and no doubt also cooler planet, but she still might have changed on the way. That and the fact that women are often wearing pants under their skirts.

Yes, you're right; she seems always to come as an afterthought to her mother: Her being pre-born is due to her mother putting her brother first (she underwent the ritual knowing of the risks for a pregnant woman, but she did it to cement Paul's position within the Fremen tribe), and Jessica always had an ambivalent attitude towards her because she secretly shared the Bene Gesserits' attitude towards those who are pre-born. And here, notice how Jessica does embrace Alia and at first, Alia is almost happy, but then she is becoming aware that while Jessica is embracing her, she looks at her grandchildren instead - and once more she is only second fiddle to someone else. You can see it in her initial smile slipping away and her face hardening. I think it is fitting that of all things, Alia became possessed of the ancestral memory of her grandfather, Baron Vladimir Harkonnen because she killed him - and in a cold and devious way at that. And these are not Atreides traits - they're Harkonnen traits, which Alia had inherited from her grandfather. I think in a way, her being possessed by him started at the point she killed him, and there was no escape at any time.

The book explains it a little better since the movies had to crunch years into hours. Ghanima and Leto knew it was Paul. They let Jessica know, Alia had already been possessed by the Baron. Jessica doesn't seek out Paul over guilty for the path she put him on. Alia is to far gone and the Twins only confirm their suspicions upon meeting him.

So lock, wath at least a video, how worried Jessica shuddered when she herd Paul`s voice calling her - Mother. Actually, Paul is standing quite far away and looks like a wanderer of the desert, in the plot the character's are often in such a position that they follow that path and act as there is an opportunity at the moment and as necessary, Leto wold say: the Golden Path:) At the begining of this part, it is said thad Aliya think's that this is her brother or she wants to believe that this is so, therefore they do not touch him and in the end she still decides to go look at him. In another scene, Jessica hearing Paul's voice while inside the castle, realizes that her son is taking and sits on her knees overwhelmed with emotion. The twins also stare at Paul intently, especially Leto feels him, just like in the other scene, so it's played perfectly)

This doesn't actually happen in the book, that is the preacher greeting Jessica on her arrival, he says this at another place entirely. Leto and Ghanima already know the person who has become known as the preacher is most likely Paul though.

Make sure that you start with “Dune”, and not “Children of Dune”. That would just be infinitely confusing. Read the books if you can, they are worth it (and they must be available on audio, too). If you can’t manage the books (which I can totally understand), the Sci-fi mini-series is quite good, and is followed up with “Children of Dune”. Then you have the film, also excellent, but it only goes to the end of “Dune”. Good luck! It’s epic.

Well, what I think the original movie got right was the kinda strange/alien-type vibe. A society completely different from our own, the sets, the costumes, and the general atmosphere. I also found the actors playing most of the characters, the Emperor, Duke Leto, Jessica even Paul just did a much better job. Oh, and I loved the original Irulan even if she only appeared for like 2 scenes, lol. This series repeating the same story just couldn't match that. I still enjoyed it but somehow felt a bit cheap and tacky and I just wasn't immersed in it as much. A great effort but just needed a bigger budget. Where it started to get interesting was the Children of Dune part. Regarding the new movie (from what I've seen) also not a huge fan of the esthetics. Looks like another generic sci-fi so my expectations are low but hope to be pleasantly surprised.

Alia is by nature of the character's creation is to be weird and uncomfortable so there will be no escaping unless they can find a smallish 10-12yo to play as if 4-6yo and early scenes use a real toddler who says nothing and maybe Jessica/others respond exposition what she says that's too old mature. Kinda nearly what they did in Syfy DUNE but still I chuckled. =P

@@jeps1973 there is also the fact that is a bit jealous, too. In another clip, she makes sure to tell the twins that if Alia's mother had not "defied her training" as a Bene Gesserit and had a son instead of a daughter, "...I would have been her first born, not your father." She doesn't say it with any particular venom or malice, just very matter of factly. But the way the actress plays it is so good, because there is this beat after she says it where she looks at each of the twins, and there is such a great mixture of haughtiness and just a HINT of cold anger in her eyes. You can see her thinking, "It should have been me. It was SUPPOSED to be me. I was supposed to be in charge." And then she realizes that despite everything, she IS in charge. She is the one ruling Arrakis in effect, but she also realizes in looking at the twins that her time as regent is nearly at an end.

@@temmy9 Yes, that's also what I always wondered about; Jessica knew about the dangers of being pre-born - the danger of possession because the subject has not yet formed a sense of self. She could at least have attempted to teach her some form of mental discipline to counteract this. But I think her attitude towards Alia was ambivalent, that she shared the sisterhood's view about abomination even though she was determined that Alia never be destroyed. I think Saskia Reeves captures this quite well in the miniseries when little Alia tells her she feels like a freak; she embraces her and tells her that "my children are not freaks" but her face does not look convinced when she says this. Also, why did she take the water of life, knowing that she was pregnant? Surely, someone might have mentioned to her during her training what would happen then, if her training was this thorough. I think the point for this decision was again that the interests of Paul - at this point already technically Duke Atreides - took precedence; she was already the Sayyadina of the tribe and by becoming its Reverend Mother, she would makle the position of Paul within the tribe an even more secure one. I think especially Alia in the miniseries was aware that she was always second fiddle to Paul - that's why she said that if things had been different, she would have been the first-born. But this brings me to something else - I can't understand the Sisterhood's order to Jessica to bear Duke Leto ONLY daughters - if the aim was to wed an Atreides daughter to a Harkonnen heir (i.e. Feyd), then the order could have been to bear him at least a daughter that they could use in this way. But it seems they particularly were against her producing any male offspring - why? Did they know that if she did, that child would be likely to be the Kwisatz Haderach, while they thought it crucial that the KH would arrive at a particular point in time? And I think the Bene Gesserit did at least take the possibility into account that Paul would be born and would be on Arrakis with his mother - why else did they send their Missionaria Protectiva there to plant that particular legend that Paul and Jessica would be able to use? They knew and had worked towards the KH coming from the combination of the Harkonnen and Atreides bloodlines, and it was probably also known within the order that Jessica was Harkonnen through her father - so every son she would bear was likely to be the Kwisatz Haderach. They may also have thought that a combination of the genes of Feyd Rautha and a daughter of Jessica would have brought some particular combination of properties that no other would.

@@christianealshut1123 the Bene Gesseret hoped that a) Paul would fail the test and die, b) the Harkonnens would be successful in killing Paul, and c) if he was the Kwizat Haderat Paul would be loyal to his mother and Jessica would be loyal to to sisterhood allowing them to control Paul. The story of Dune is not really set 10191 A.D. (after Christ), but A.G. (after the foundation of the Spacing Guild), and that's not more than 10.000, but more than 20.000 years in the future as seen from our time. Probably the people round that time would not understand how you can imagine a Galactic Empire as a feudal structure; that would be totally impracticable. Not to mention that everyone should be aware of the irony of defining a new era on the foundation of a commercial organization (which the Spacing Guild ultimately is).

To me they didn't all fit well, I mean Aquaman?

So CONTACT LENSES are worn by alot of spice users. I accept that the reason apart from just $ saving from CGI.

ITA or another better Paul Atriedes actor with dark hair. I don't know why the first movie they chose a more blond scandanavian look Atriedes but then in CoD next one LetoII & Ghani come out with dark brown black hair? Chani's genetics can't explain that for me. Apart from Syfy DUNE being kinda poor in acting production scripting, I tell people if they want visual plays of the books Watch the Lynch DUNE find the extended edition or one by fan adding ALL cut scenes that make it understandable, which isn't bad after already knowing the books it's just trippy dreamscape and then roll into this Children of Dune.

@ShawnPutnam- I became James' ass sucking fan back in2004 after watching this movie, he totally blew me away, too bad Jessica Brooks didn't get anything bigger afterwards, as she played off of him perfectly as Leto's Twin. I have followed his career since (BBC shows & films), appreciate his turn doing Prof X but some of his movies after that one comicbook action/spy movie WANTED, haven't been that good IMHO but weird artsy, like Filth, Trance, Welcome to the Punch etc. Then after hearing reading he won a BAFTA with Tom Hardy, I've kept both of them as 'My Boys' to watch out for in probably good productions.

ps ::whispering:: what is REALLY annoying me about this new film is that it FEELS LOOKS wonderful like the DUNE universe but the soundtrack, dialogue style, scripting and JESSICA actress are so IMHO jarringly not DUNE that I cannot enjoy rewatching it anymore. The monotonous drone of the soundtrack is aggravating sticks in your mind pisses me off. Just galls/pisses me listening to & looking at the actress Rebecca Ferguson whoke sanctimonious '*Dune is misogynist*' face speaking the holy words of the 'Mother of Muad Dib'! I find myself wanting to bleach it from my memory yet still wish to reewatch a well recorded 1080p/4k @ home version just because it's sharper cleaner than what I saw in the theater.

@@klyanadkmorr Totally agree. Immediately after this 2021 pre-spice-mass of a rehash, the plot holes began gaping wider than a sandworms's dentition. ALL the script changes were gratuitous, totally unnecessary and tangential to the plot. For example, Chani is 'Daughter of Liet'..Liet was 'son of' Pardot Kynes. The Gom Jabbar scene, so crucial to the overall plot, now involves Paul unable to control his voice. Silly lines like: "..it takes years to master the voice.." The vision Paul had re Duncan, was he Jessica AND Duncan escaped from the Ecological testing station..It getscworse when the suggestion the Harkonnens were wealthier than the Emperor..despite the latter owning a 51% stake in CHOAM. It was basic unguided artillery that trapped Duke Leto's forces in Shield Wall caves, not guided smart bombs. The CGI was superb - especially the greenhouse-free Ducal Fief residence at Arrakeen, some scenes, such as Paul's thopter wings retraction in the sandstorm, breathtaking, but for every visual gem there were ten plot howlers. Why, would canny insurgents indulge in a duel to the death in the open sand, where they'd have to transport possibly both dead bodies, to reclaim their water elsewhere? One chance patrol and no more Maud Dib. Spice harvesting was done during the day, else why would Duke Leto break with practice? Its a mess. They could've got Ethiopians and Sudanese to play Fremen. Chani was way too 'water fat'..Piter totally unconvincing. 1950's Hollywood B movies were done better. So annoyingly frustrating.

@@a.m.armstrong8354 Heh, I get your gripes, I just wouldn't be as incendiary because I know there is no perfect ability to render the DUNE books precisely as Frank Herbert wrote them but then per obsessive fans like us WE'D even quibble over pinhead issues which might not really be what he was meaning or matter to the larger story, like I don't heartbreak over non modern ethnically Saharan desert regional actors for Fremen the Jamis actor was african just not N. African or subsaharan but then for the syfy show they resorted to Native Am. desert culture more. Or weapons fire bombing the Arakkeen base, the slow bombs were cool & cgi cool winding artillary that looks targetted vs regular is a nitpick thing to even notice as it was a book exposition commentary on the military attack coup but not obvious thing. I'd complain if it was shown as a dashboard computerized button pushing bombs at targets vs people at a gun inside a ship with precision pointing at targets.

@@klyanadkmorr Military matters set much of the action. Someone obviously jazzed up the artillery. Details matter: ethnicity the hidden undercurrent in Dune. The people of the Nilotic Misr being Nubian. The Mahdi taken straight from Imperial British recounts in Sudan. Pundi Rice, a staple of Myanmar locatetes the impact African troops had against Japanese (Sardaukar)..African troops were the first in WW2 to capture Japanese, hence the dry humour of the Hawat scene where a Fremen casually refers to Sardaukar captives. "Well why don't you go capture one?" Chani's lament about the Harkonnens completely missed the point about the brutality of Dune being such that even the Sardaukar were 'an inconvenience'. For the Fremen, Spice was like honey and royal jelly to bees. It was a way of life, plus they bribed the Guild to keep secret the fact that they ran Arrakis. The CGI really was superb. Scale and visual dynamics spot on. I particularly liked the architectural details of the Ducal seat at Arrakeen. The scale of that place plus the Frank Lloyd Wright geometry been seen as 'old-fashioned' was very slick compared with the bug-like Guild lighters. This version got the transition from cosmic to planetary scale absolutely spot on..Herbert being a technophobe notwithstanding. I admit I'm a nitpicker, but this is a nitpicker's book, so I'm observing the minutae..

As been constantly replied by many for AGES, BOOKS using CHILDREN KIDS for very adult like expression & dialogue is impossible to get with real life child actors AND the cost for on set care for under 18yo actors is LOT. Compared to the drama queen level of acting the Alia actress did & previous first part of DUNE series Paul as a teen Luke Skywalker Toshi Station acting, the twins actors James & Jessica were FAR FROM angsty teens but youthful enjoyable focused and psychic mature with right level of concern, IM&many other's opinions POV based on the ratings of the time very high worldwide.

But imho more like director/producers probably misjudged or assuming of Jessica's time away from Arrakis was long enough & allowed her eyes to return normal, while forgetting that spice ingestion creates an addiction besides she took the Water of Life,, so she should have still had Blue eyes. And imho, more likely Also it cost alot for them to cgi track actor's eyes and maybe it was a cost savings too.

@@crazyal8565 it is entirely possible that the effect wore off due to her returning to Caladan, shortly after the whole climactic battle with the Emperor. Many people don't realize she left fairly soon thereafter.. she needed to get away from Arrakis because of all the echoes of Leto I. Even though back on Caladan she would remember many things associated with him, at least they didnt have the tragedy aspect to them. She only consented to return to Arrakis because Duncan Ghola) or Stilgar asked her to... but I cant remember which one.

The accent of the actress who played Alia has always been a bit too jarring for me, it comes over to me as if her lines are badly acted/delivered, especially so when next to all these actors and actresses who did great. It was hard to enjoy the scenes with her because she stuck out like a sore thumb. And this is just regarding this specific (accent of the) actress alone, because the fremen characters who had accents were actually totally great. So I don't know, maybe it's the actress acting ability, or her accent, but she throws me off every damn time.

She has the crazy eyes that shows that she's on the edge of losing it, she has the cutting anger look to her, And she can look crazy and beautiful at the same time. A nice thing about music for TV or radio the budget doesn't constrain the quality, unlike the CGI - that and nearly two decades! Also Hans Zimmer seems to be expected to create the grandest possible synth braams more than any memorable melodies today. Expensive sophisticated sounding textures and tone over any actual melody - unlike in the Gladiator days where he was probably going for the Vangelis vibe.
