Something like that actually happened to a light friend of mine. I hadn’t heard from him for a few months. I decided to stop bye on a Monday between running my service calls as I was passing near his home. His brother-in-law was cleaning up from a yard sale they had over the weekend and informed me that he passed away about a week or two earlier. His equipment was sold for pennies on the dollar at a yard sale ran by his sister and brother-in-law. Funny thing about five years earlier he had willed his equipment to a mutual friend of ours so that very thing wouldn’t happen. I guess they decided not to honor as will.

Json, you have made a huge mistake, let me explain the _correct_ way to do this. I got my license long before I met my wife, so she knew nothing about radios, and I had been inactive since we were married. One day she came home from work and announced that her workplace has some ham radio equipment in the EOC, so, she needs to get the license. I helped her a little learning stuff for the test, she took the test and passed, after which she promptly announced 'we need new ham radio equipment'. She chose an ic-7300, I chose the antennas, she chose the fancy desk mike, and we went shopping. We do travel a fair amount in areas outside of cellular coverage, so she decided we needed to add some 2 meter gear to the RV, and a couple hand held units showed up. Today, if I think some new equipment would look good in the shack, I dont buy it, I just show her a picture, and explain how great it is, then wait. Usually shows up in a month or two. I really have no idea how much she has spent on ham radio gear, and guess what, I dont care :)

I always loved scouring hamfests for components, tools, and test equipment for building vacuum tube audio/guitar amps. Studied the ARRL handbook forever. Never resonated with amateur radio operator personalities, though. It's interesting how narrow nerd hobbyist silos can be. I never would have been able to learn to restore / rebuild all kinds of gear without being able to buy stuff for pennies on the dollar (or haul away for free) at hamfests. I always bought handmade soaps from the SO's tables. Perhaps soon I will be hauling my stash to a hamfest so I can sell the remainder of my awesome stash to a young person for a pitance. I love the expression on a young person's face when you give them a fully functional tektronix oscilloscope.

My spouse has a ballpark on what these things cost, but she's also just not concerned about it. The only thing she's ever asked me about in a concerned voice was, "We're not going to end up with a 300 foot tower on the roof, right?" To which I could honestly tell her 1. 300 feet would be excessive in the suburbs; 2. even if I didn't think so, the city thinks so (there's a 70 foot max from ground restriction) and 3. We live MUCH too close to the airport for that to be a good idea.

About a month back I had to remove the 'shack' from it's former location to a temp one. She helped. Noting there were about nine different rigs on the bench, and twelve more on the shelfs, and about twenty more on the back shelves. She looked at me and ask "Why so many radios?" I looked at her and said "these nine are the normal used on the station. These twelve are the working ones in the tub collection and those (pointing toward the back shelves are the rest of the tube collection that require repairs. She then said "what are the ones on the shelves in the garage then?" "Those are yet to be looked into to see what is wrong." So I have the same issues, but I never bother asking how much the box of beads and stuff she just came home with cost. That way I keep the issue of my "Problem" quiet. So I have not put the HF stuff back up, I will as soon as the remodel is complete. (oh at last count seventy five tube radios, twelve hybrid, and transistor and three others. There are four Marshall Amps which I might sell.) Peace

She's taking this SO well !! :) My GF is almost the same way, she says I have "too many radios", even though I'm not a ham, but I use FRS/FMRS and regular terrestrial bands - AM/FM, shortwave, etc. I made sure to let her know that several will get new homes, plus I also bought her a nice little stereo system, and "we" replaced her aging TV set - a largish CRT style, with one of those "new-fangled" flat screens - with some brains in it ! :) lol I really think that buying the woman some gear that she likes will help soften the "Damage" that could result from spending too much on a hobby - unless, you factor in the possibility that she's just as involved with it as you are. As you gift toward the misses, just know that if you spent that much ($1.3k, wow!) on just one of those radios, she's wondering why, and just what you're getting out of them. I'm barely starting out, but my gal just loves the walkie talkies I got her. They're almost perfect, but they work a lot better than the green FRS units I got her before I moved in with her. We use them when shopping or traveling together, or when she's going somewhere, and I'm not tagging along - like when she wants to do some early morning laundry, or a milk run, or something. We can find each other, or just know when our bus arrives, etc. She's finally catching on, that the electronics do help ease the boredom, and she's almost never alone when she brings her HT, or the pocket radio along. :) I so enjoyed this - the interaction, and her reactions are just awesome, and thanks for sharing ! :)

Before my wife passed away, she was an Amateur operator. She loved VHF/UHF and one year for her birthday insisted on getting a new Mobile for her van. And she also found the first Baofeng that we ever bought. I did not even know they were available. So there was no sneaking any radio in because she knew what they cost. You should see the collection of glazes in her pottery studio 😜 I seldom ask the cost because I don't want to know

@@KM4ACK Oh I get it. My wife has paints, pens, pencils.. I gave up keeping up with it. I have nowhere near what you have. But what I do have and get at times she is like "Oh lord I guess your taking me to Hobby Lobby"

NEVER complain about what a wife spends on, Art supplies, Clothes, Shoes, or when she wants to eat out for fear she starts complaining about your spending. I OWE it all to her for seldom asking what a radio item costs. She is a General and has and idea, but she also likes to buy other things as well. I have been learning CW and I have my eye on a CW QRP radio(I have none YET!) but may not be allowed to buy one. But if she EVER needs ANY art supplies or want to eat out, she gets it with NO questions asked. I only pray that I am allowed to get the radio I want in return. No guaranty's.

Priceless...pun intended. Don't wonder when she gets those new bags, shoes, and art supplies...where the $ came from...dangerous conversation my friend.

Can’t remember the last time I laughed out loud at a ham radio video…. This video was awesome, great job putting this together!! The real challenge would be bringing the wife to Dayton next year!

She came to Orlando and Huntsville this year but didn't make Dayton. She will be in Orlando again come February :-)
