I really appreciate the closeups. That alone is far more helpful than someone just sitting there in the middle of the shot trying to explain what they are doing! I hope you keep doing the closeups in future knapping videos.

Good explanation Donny. I had to learn a lot of this the hard way. Cut fingers-humanity’s first hazardous waste. But yeah man! Good explanation! I love experimental archeology!

What do you prefer to Knapp? Obsidian, dacite, flint , chert, coral, glass? I'm just starting out and trying to figure out what the best materials to learn the are. Thanks for the awesome video. The science behind it makes it easier to understand.

No worries. Happy to help. I like hard cherts. The tools produced last a good chunk of time. If your starting out…dacite is affordable and a good stone to learn from. Obsidian I stay from typically, but dacite is good to start with.

Perhaps the best flake I've ever seen followed these exact concepts. Did you ever see William Lord take a long axis bilit and strike an obcidian blank CD? I still can't forget that one strike. Slow motion. He had a perfect dagger preform and had no more thinning to do. It's on his KZbin channel on "making high quality obcidian dagger " will Lord prehistoric survival" It's pretty easy once you get the motion down.

Hey for some of the beginners reading comments, Donny talks about it a little but supporting the stone is very important for having the flake travel further and terminating smoothly. I always thought that supporting the stone was just holding it but if you don’t support the stone on the leg or in the hand exactly how he does it in this video then you will get step fractures and hinges. Took me a long time to figure this out.

sir, you provide excellent lessons that i enjoy very much!! thank you for that! you're one of the few people on the internet that i found who shows it as realistic as possible. very off-topic, but i wanted to ask you (for purely educational reasons as it seams i can't find answers anywhere on the internet) about animal furs and leathers: how to make clothes and stuff from them, how to preserve the fur better with available resources, and especially how long does animal leather/fur clothing lasts. would be very excited to learn this!

Awesome video as always. in my opinion your the best primitive survival channel ive seen. So now im curious if you or some skilled knapper looked at my flakes could they tell me what im doing wrong? Like if i should get a bigger or small hammerstone or more striking force or less and give me some useful insight on what i could improve on just by looking at my flakes?

It looks like the support of your fingers is directing the shock through the stone to a certain point and where your support stops is where the flake stops

doesn't the supporting with the finger also increase the chance of splinters flying up into your face/eyes? has this ever been an issue for you?

Hey I'm really curious, is there any chance on getting a more in depth walk along identifying churt, flint, and other knapping stones? To be honest I've been working on the upper Delaware. I find great hammer and other tool stones but I'm having trouble finding anything to make bladed tools. What am I not seeing?

How did you get the ends of your antler billets rounded? Did you grind down the burrs into a rounded shape?
@jimmiegraybill2524
@jimmiegraybill2524 11 ай бұрын
I've had far less step fractures since watching your tutorials. However i still get a little knob or hump that forms on either side because i can't seem to carry that flake all the way through it. Is my tool too hard or soft? I'm using primarily a small section of deer antler and mostly hammer stones.
