I had knee replacement done on my left knee. I was discharged on a Monday & my left knee continued to swell till the stitches almost popped. That Friday, went back to the ortho doctor & he drained 1000 cc of fluid off that knee. He could not believe that my knee had accumulated that much fluid. Then 2 weeks later, he drained another 400 cc off of it again. He then sent me to a infection control doctor that I had indeed had a infection in that knee & I was put on home IV vancomyocin. During that 1 year after the lkr, I was hospitalized 7 times & had 5 surgeries & was on IV antibiotics for 3 months & also developed sepsis too. The doctors said they.could not believe that I lived through that.

Can this be a short-term treatment to avoid knee replacement surgery? I’m 8 weeks out now and tired of stiffness and physical therapy.
@jackculler1489 Жыл бұрын
No. If you are a candidate for knee replacement surgery it usually means your knee cartilages had eroded/damaged that the bones are already affected the effusion is secondary to that problem not a primary problem. But the procedure can be use to relieve pressure and pain on your knees especially if you have significant swelling due to effusion. It is not use to delay your surgery or postpone it. Don’t delay the sooner you get it your quality of life will improve.
@jondstewart Жыл бұрын
@@jackculler1489 I thank you for the heads up. I had my right knee done March 29 and more than halfway healed. I was 100% bone on bone in the medial and middle parts and feel better. But my left knee is almost as bad and I plan to do it in September. My orthopedist PA recommended to just use NSAID’s in the meantime and that PRP probably wouldn’t do me any good. I had synvisc gel injections that didn’t do a thing and cortisone just put a bandaid on it. Years ago they removed Mountain Dew looking fluid from my knee before cortisone injections, which used to help.
@jackculler1489 Жыл бұрын
@@jondstewart your condition is tough and it sounds like grade IV osteoarthritis. Yep NSAIDS is the mainstay pain medication for Osteoarthritis also immobilization of that knee joints at that stage helps prevent exacerbating pain. The steroid injections also helps with pain management and reduce inflammation secondary to the bones rubbing on each other. If there is significant edema or joint swelling we remove fluid so the steroids would act faster… fluid in joints can dilute or even mitigate the pain relieving effect of the steroid. PRP is used to promote healing but the treatments for joint disease still quite controversial (some doctors gives it, some don’t) American college of rheumatology even advise against giving it. Personally i will Not give it because it’s very expensive and it doesn’t slow down or cure Osteoarthritis lastly the pain mitigation by PRP is limited to nonexistent. It does have it’s benefits like for hair loss and tissue/muscle healing but not for degenerative joint diseases like Osteoarthritis. That’s why we call it degenerative because we cannot reverse it but we can slow down the progression. The only way to get your mobility is through knee replacement surgery or what we call arthroplasty. The replacement joints typically last for 10-15 years but there are patients where their artificial joints last for 2-3 decades quite rare but it does happen although most data on it is anecdotal but i say it anyways to encourage patient to go through the surgery because their new joints will last a long time and would improve their quality of life Yeah i can see why the gel injections didn’t work because there is already bone to bone involvement meaning there is no longer cartilage for the gel to lubricate. The yellow mountain dew like fluid is synovial fluid(joint lubricant). it’s typically seen in non-inflammatory joint disease such as Osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative non-inflammatory joint disease it’s the most common arthritis in developed countries. I’m sorry you had to suffer this disease no one should go through it but for most it is an avoidable part of aging, it’s common among obese, even athletes can get it especially of they suffer from repeated joint injuries. Also if joint disease runs in their family a person may likely develop it when they are older. I Hope all procedures goes well and you heal well.
