Kneecap Movie Review | BONKERS FUN!!

Hey from a fellow reviewer from Northern Ireland. 🙂 I’ve yet to see this one. (Its quite controversial here, which is ridiculous). Certain political parties here still are fighting to keep people here from learning the Irish language (due to us technically being classed as British). People want to be able to learn the language as a heritage thing and even speak it amongst themselves in certain areas, but it’s frowned upon in a big way. Half the population here identify as Irish. The other half identify as British and hate anything Irish being associated with NI. We’ve even had protests here to try and stop this movie being shown. Aaahhh sweet old politics. F*ck it. I’ll be Irish ‘til I die 😂 Nice review. Glad you liked it.

What was happening was that the Irish language was under attack and funding had been withdrawn from a host of language groups and education in the Irish language had been cut to the bone. Unionist members of local govt openly mocked it as a "hobby" and a "leprachaun language". Furthermore Irish was nit recognised in the Court system which was a remaining legislation from the Penal Laws where Catholicism and expressions of Irishness were outlawed. A Jim Crow system imposed on Ireland by the UK. Kneecap's song C.E.A.R.T.A (Rights) was part of the campaign to protect Irish and give it equal status in Northern Irish law. The campaign was a success. ❤

Their name is a play on words: kneecapping was a punishment often used by paramilitaries (mostly the IRA) during the "Troubles" but, in Irish, ni cheapaim means "i don't understand" and sounds almost the exact same.

The first 20 minutes or so is really loose, but once they start rapping it really tightens up and becomes good.

There are accents in Ireland that happens to be the Ulster accent. More specifically Belfast.
