It’s pretty crazy how good fishing gear has gotten over the past 25-30 years. My dads gear that was good then is so prehistoric now (especially the reels). Good gear just keeps getting better and less expensive. Ugly stiks are a good value for sure

I still have his garcia mitchell reels and 7 ft surf rod in 70s yellow with green guide wraps and clunky guides on it. He caught many a fluke and bass off that rig from the surf. The other reel is on a boat rod that used to be white, the coating is now dingy yellow. I break use it once in a while next to my newer stuff. Love it

My favorite trout rod is still the Shakespeare wonder rod , I've had mine since I was 16 yrs old I bought it at a yard sale in Boyne Falls . ( I'm 50 this year ) and still fish that rod , I've had new eyes put on once back in the 90's )

nice....i too grew up buying used gear at garage sales, swap meets, wherever. So much great gear goes wanting simply because a fisherfolk didn't run across the used bargain.

I need this. As have had mad success and longevity with my GX.2 5.1. Lasted 6 years. For truck/car/hiking this is quality for a great price in a packable size.

Attach each section with the line guides 90 degrees out of line. Twist the section until the line guides are aligned. I took the GX2 4 Piece Travel Spinning Combo on an airline to Maine and fished every day for a week. I estimate at least 500 casts and the end never came off. This rod and reel caught a bunch of fish including a 4 pound Smallmouth Bass and a 6 pound Pickerel.

Thanks for this review! As pretty much as it has done for decades, Shakespeare is putting out another bargain/great value fishing rod! With any rod that requires assembly, particularly multi-piece, a fisherperson needs to learn to check/tighter their ferrules throughout the day. If a person is a casting a lot, those ferrules will come loose. A loose ferrule connection is a spot ripe for breakage. The water tip shared here is an interesting one. Another tip is, when assembling the rod, have the pieces be slight off--center when putting the pieces together, then rotate the pieces to align. Turning the pieces into each other more less seems to help lock them into place.

Dang it i just bought a 4pcs kastking brutus...now i have to get the ugly stick as well. I have the tiny ultra lite gx2 with a size 25 reel. Great for river trout. Sometimes i out fish the fly guys

the reel on mine broke shortly after buying it and using it once. the only complaint i have about the rod is lining up the eyes, i wish there was a line on the rod at where they connect

Single hook, bury it in the foam handle and break the rod down. Multiple hooks or lure, probably should take it off before packing.

If you don't need the packable version, I would get the standard version. A 2 piece or 1 piece rod just has a better feel. But the difference is not a big deal if you think you might like the ability to pack the rod.

Well, Ugly Stik makes a few different models. This one seems pretty durable. I don't know if it's unbreakable some some others though.

Maybe braid. Not mono, too thick of a diameter.

Yes- just make sure to get a high quality fiber brain so that the line is smooth and won’t make small grooves in your line guided- otherwise it’s super fun to see how much bend you can get out of your rod and hear your line scream as you hook into a 15 pound pike
