Knife making - Forging a Long Yakutian knife

I'm not as happy as I could be with the hammered in groove on the knife as it could have been wider. I'll probably make another smaller one soon since I do like this style of knife.

이치고 the Siberian is implied since it is after all Yakutian. And the Yakutia don't live anywhere else other than in Siberia I've never heard of a yakut in Germany or China🤔 but who knows there's Lakota in Germany and Russia

Это нож хозяйственного назначения, длинной лезвия чуть шире ладони, он делается из доступной низкоуглеродистой стали, практически из железа, с минимальной закалкой, оттого мягкий. Именно по этому изготавливается с большим долом (вмятиной). Мягкость нужна что бы заточить о любой подножный камень, и на нем же его и выправить, если погнул при разделке оленя. Ручка делается костяной или деревянной, приплюснутой бочкообразной формы. Рукоять сделал правильно, но перестарался с закалкой и длинной.

рукоять делается всегда из капа березы и форма сечения всегда яйцевидная именно такая, никакой кости и бочкообразности!!! И не обязательно мягкой стали в большинстве случаев якуты предпочитают твердую сталь и остроту бритвы

Have you heard of Baotou Steel? Just like hamburgers, the three knives are combined into one. The outside two are soft and the middle one is hard. Then the clay is attached to the knife. The knife has higher strength, better toughness and is not easy to break.

Aka san mai, aka laminated steel. This generally does not actually result in any special properties unless special steels are used (given more modern heat treating methods, anyway), it was just a way to stretch good steel further.

the Yakutian knife is not only a form (shape), it is a one-sided hardening in a carbon donar (coal) from the convex side, which allows the knife to almost self-sharpen, like a beaver’s tooth

Back to topic. I guess they temper back the hollow part a bit more to get it softer then. I read once that the traditional Yakut knife is not hardened to a particularly high HRC to make it easier to sharpen on the field.

Автор уверен , что клинок надо закаливать полностью , а не только режущую кромку ? Насколько помню форма клинка обусловлена в том числе и условиями эксплуатации при низких температурах и полная закалка только добавит ему хрупкости .

If the anvil is not at the proper height you can blow out your elbow and hurt your shoulder. The most common injury I’ve noticed is burning when taking hot material out of the forge, make sure you wear a good Kevlar glove on your tong hand and don’t leave it in front of the forge for too long.

I see you too use up that minwax trick. I just put a handle on the sword I've been making all summer. Honestly I'm so happy to have discovered this. Есть разные гипотизы того как должен выглядеть якут. Услышав все, я склоняюсь к той где дол создаёт ребро жесткости, а обратная сторона не шлефуется и не обрабатывается вообще, тогда при каждой заточка оголяется закаленный край. Тут закаленный слой снят.

Why stamp the maker mark when you are forging and risk grinding/hammering it out? I find that the best time to stamp it is while heat treating.

I like the Yakut design as well. I made a shorter stubby one and want try a narrower more ancient style. What is the weight of your hammer? Edit... Have you considered make a spring fuller to hammer in the groove?
