For this build, I am using CPM154 and curly maple with an O.D. green G10 liner. I rough ground to 120 grit on the belt grinder and then went to 400 grit on the disc before hand finishing at 500 grit. If you have any questions about this build, feel free to ask in the comments.

IN. My sort of knife, the Goldilocks knife, just right. Will definitely be making one with the template in the near future. I have never seen anyone tint the epoxy for gluing before, other than to hide something, your "just in case" reasoning behind it makes complete sense. Nice knife.

Great Looking EDC/Skinner! Why do you color your epoxy??? So you can have a visual on even coverage???
@rangermadeknives
@rangermadeknives 5 жыл бұрын
Joe, I color it for two reasons. First is because I often see the line of uncolored epoxy in the assembly. If I get the color match pretty close to either my scale material or my liner material, that line almost completely disappears. The second reason is actually the more important one and that is, if I happen to end up with any small gaps or imperfections in the assembly, the colored epoxy will make those nearly invisible. Of course, I never have gaps or flaws in my knives so, it's just precaution! Ha Ha! It's probably worth mentioning that I don't always color my epoxy. If I were putting a figured wood scale directly to the tang with no liner, I would not color the epoxy because it would be impossible to get a color match to a multi-color piece of wood. I only color the epoxy if it will bind something that has a solid color I can match.

Is that a file card type of thing you used on the buffer wheels? Was it to comb caked up compound out or rough them up so they can take more compound easily or something?
@rangermadeknives
@rangermadeknives 5 жыл бұрын
It is a buffer rake. It cleans the wheels before you use them. Critical in a knife shop because there is so much metal dust.

In for the awesome giveaway, really enjoyed the video. Now for some questions: 1) I noticed on your bandsaw you have a rather thick chunk of metal on the work table, was this an addition you made to allow for clearance whilst cutting? 2) I noticed that you don't grind a 45 degree chamfer on the cutting edge prior to HT, do you not have issues with the 90 degree edge stripping a lot of grit off you belts or is there an approach to avoiding that which you don't show in the video? 3) I noticed you used some form of pigment with your epoxy, I use this method as well, though the product you use looks like something you'd buy from an art supply sort. Any chance of sharing the details of that pigment?
@rangermadeknives
@rangermadeknives 5 жыл бұрын
Glad you enjoyed the video. The block on the bandsaw is a chunk of A7 but, it could probably be most anything. I used A7 because it doesn't rust, gouge or gall. It is not heat treated. It is fastened to the table with 3/4" square pieces of double sided carpet tape in each of the corners. I learned the lesson the hard way, not to cover the whole bottom with the tape. This riser makes cutting smaller pieces much more comfortable and controllable. I just don't worry about knocking the abrasive off the belts. I run my first belt (50 Blaze) at full speed and it usually cuts just fine through a couple blades. Given the price that most of my knives go for, the cost of belts is nominal. The pigment is just basic artist oil paints. On the West Systems website there is a study that shows you can pretty much tint with anything as long as it is less than 5% of the volume of the mixed epoxy. I like that I can custom mix a color to match my needs and I've had great success with the artist oils. Got to give credit where it is due; I learned this from my good friend, Johnny Stout.
@FuzzykidSA
@FuzzykidSA 5 жыл бұрын
@@rangermadeknives thanks for such a detailed response. Definitely going to look into a raised area when I get a bandsaw. The belt cost vs value of the knife makes complete sense and something I should consider. I usually surface grind prior to HT but if I'm not grinding in those chamfers prior to HT the option to clean up the knife post HT on the surface grinder becomes a lot easier (I don't own the surface grinder if you are wondering how I have that and not a bandsaw yet). I don't use the West System epoxy but I'm definitely going to experiment with the oil paints for pigment with the product I use.
