Nice video! You can indeed get a knife sharp using a relatively coarse stone. Doesn't need to take it to 12k stone every time. And that super refined 12k edge is often lost in the first few seconds of use anyway. In practical use a sharp edge with a bit of bite is preferable to a razors edge in most cases. Than you for sharing!

Why couldn't a fellow soak up the leftover residue from lapping these Crystolons on SIC and plate glass? I sure wash a lot of it down the driveway. Maybe a slat of basswood? You definitely have me brainstorming Jeff. I love experimenting things like this. Thanks for sharing!

@@rockets4kids Yes, at steep angles. The Norton's to me require more pressure, especially the India's. When it comes to sharpening my Rex 76 and Rex 121 I definitely use the plates. But I agree, those Crystolons are hard to beat. Next to those are my Gritomatic SICS that Jeff turned me onto. My only mistake was not ordering two sets of them because they are near impossible to get right now.

@@Jef this reminds me of how I recall my grandpa had a fairly sharp edge years ago and I rejected it since they `obviously didn't know how to sharpen like we do now`. Yet I always remembered this old timer of his had a nice bite. Fortunately I had his old stone hidden in a pile somewhere and learned a valuable lesson...his stone was a Franz-Swaty formally of Marsburg. If you know you know and then realize the old guys knew something.

@@CraigLuna i got one of those franz swaty barber hones. Its basically like a spyderco medium. Maybe a tad finer, but you can condition it. Ive done a few videos over the years, and had that one in them. I’ve removed so many over the years, i can’t recall.

@ it seems to somehow do better than my spyderco meds (bench and sharpermaker). For years I always assume it was similar but I don’t seem to get that same thumb bite on the meds. I just got it out and tried it on my edc SAK. It definitely works differently. Even better than the ultra fine 3x8 but better feedback and all recently cleaned with barkeeps. I seem to recall different grades over time per the straight razor guys but I’m no expert there. I don’t use it much and I’ve had it now for probly 25yrs.

Unless that knife you were sharpening was extremely damaged you did way more grinding than was necessary. The 320 side of that stone is *fast.* Just a couple off strokes on each side of the blade is likely all that was necessary. Not criticizing your technique, just letting people know you are underselling the capabilities of this stone.

@@rockets4kids yea it was freshly lapped too. I over sharpened for sure but it is what it is 🤷♂️

@@Jef If you really want to show off the capabilities of this stone, lightly drag the edge a single time over the bottom rim of a coffee mug. This is sufficient to completely kill the edge. Then see how little grinding is required to restore it.
