I know Thanksgiving's a little confusing, so I'll try to break it down for you. It's the day we celebrate the freeing of the United States from the reign of terror of Lord Gobble, a 50-foot tall turkey/Sasquatch hybrid who demanded human sacrifices every November. In 1863, Abraham Lincoln rode his eagle- gryphon into battle, singlehandedly slaying Lord Gobble and freeing us from our blood oath to our fearsome tyrant. In celebration of this momentous victory, we consume the corpses of his descendants and parade our largest and most influential cartoon characters through the streets of New York as a display of power, so that history will not repeat itself. Hope that clears things up.

When selecting a hunting blade I recommend a plastic or kydex sheath. Much much easier to clean out than leather or nylon webbing style. Leather & nylon webbing will absorb blood etc and begin to smell. Like the knives here - go for orange to make the blade easier to find if dropped. I like the Kansbol but if you don't know how to maintain a scandi grind the Revo might be better as you can use a pull through sharpener with it. (I know pull through sharpeners can be the devil's work but they do allow for rapid sharpening if your blade goes dull while processing an animal.) Sharp blades all.

Check out Smith's DCS4 ... it's a double diamond that stows in the handle, I've had two & use them almost exclusively for all sharpening that doesn't need the belt sander. Great for light touch ups/alignment but can also hog a bit of steel if you need it to. Highly recommend & only like $20.

Happy holidays to the knife center crew. I am a US Merchant Marine Navigational Officer, who still uses a pen daily. I’d like to get a nice pen, preferably corrosion resistant, for all my logbook needs. Half the day is nice and dry on the bridge, but the other half is down and dirty on deck in the salt, rust, and weather. I carry the pilot G-6 07mm, because I love how smoothly it writes, but I’m open to other types of pen refills as long as they are a smooth writer too. No price limit. Thanks! P.S. for a work knife I carry the spyderco tusk, it’s a shame they discontinued that model.

The answer to knife sharpening I realized on the boat with Fillet Knives. Walmart, in the fishing department sells plastic sheathed ultra sharp 7" fillet knives for around 2 bucks each. Buy ten and you are good in the utility drawer for the most of the rest of you life. Just did the turkey the other day better than any knife I ever used.

I have always suggested that new knife containers should start small and not go high end off the bat. This allows you to figure out what you like and don't like. Grind. Handle material. Blade shape. Blade style, etc. For the price of a expensive knife, you can buy multiple knives and enjoy! When you feel it's ready to pull the trigger on a knife that's hefty in price, you can then weigh in on if you might like it or not. ❤️

Those straight razors look fabulous. Anybody thinking of adjusting their shaving habits from disposable style systems I personally can recommend the craft, it's wonderful to spend a bit of extra time looking after myself rather than just rushing through the shaving experience. These razors and double edge blades make you slow down and pay attention, every man should know the shape of his own face and the method by which he can cut back his trim.

A lot of hunters are moving to smaller knives. I pretty much only use my Esee Izula in S35V. I rarely see anyone busting out a big fixed blade or for that matter guthooks. I think a lot of hunters are realizing just how much you can get done and how accurate and controlled you are with a 3 inch or so fixed blade or havalon.

As always thanks David and Thomas for your review, and wish you both a happy thanksgiving weekend. Re the straight razors; few years back I started to use one (and also collect a few). Didn’t last too long as I kept cutting myself🙄, definitely an art to using correctly. I really like Solingen products, have a switch blade and even nail clippers that I purchased from them. Interesting thing was I also at some point in time bought the Dovo straight razor, but what I found was out of the box the razor was not actually sharp enough to shave, in comparison to an old 1930s vintage (British) razor I’d been using which was DEADLY sharp. I tried to strop the Dovo, but that’s an art within itself. And have to say (from my limited knowledge) that I agree with comments from the barber, Japanese shaving/blade products are excellent…..Feather blades all the way😊. Actually maybe Thomas might do live review of straight razors shaving his beard . What do ya reckon Thomas?😂

Hi DCA, love your videos and the knowledge you share with us. However, I'm not sure about your advice on the Kansbol: As far as I know Mora puts a 20 degree per side secondary bevel on all their knives. They say that's better for general purpose. So if you don't remove that secondary bevel to put a true Scandi on the knife for woodwork, you can sharpen the Kansbol like any other knife. (Mine at least seems to keep a razor sharp edge with regular stropping.)Or am I mistaken? Best from Germany, Mo
@knifecenter
@knifecenter Жыл бұрын
One can sharpen one of their Scandi edges at a "conventional" angle, because the Scandi angle is more like 12 degrees per side (even though Mora technically puts a super slight hollow grind on their Scandi to make the first sharpen easier). The downside of this, is the thickness of the rest of the Scandi behind the edge will make it less efficient than a hollow or high flat grind. -DCA
@moleb6341
@moleb6341 Жыл бұрын
@@knifecenter Interesting! Will keep an eye on the possibility of my Moras getting too thick behind the edge! If you're not tired of me yet: Why doesn't Mora put a true Scandi on their knives right away? The steels they use are though enough for that. The 12-degree-Scandi-slight-hollow-grind with a secondary bevel seems unnecessarily laborious (if not counterproductive) to me now. Thank you so much for answering my first question! Best, Mo

Hi Guys. First off, thank you for all your knife video's. I love watching them, learning and being generally entertained. Much better than prime time TV ;) I'm a knife enthusiast with a small collection ranging from quite a few Extrema Ratio knives to swiss army knives. I just love those pioneers. Lately I started to like knives with folded handles. They're really strong, robust and mostly have flat profiles, great for city carry. My Question: What is that construction called officially? I find it hard to search for knives not knowing what that build style is called. Do you have a/some recommendations maybe? I own: a Coldsteel Pocket Bushman, 3 sizes Higonokami folders, a Boker Atlas Black, a Mercator Black cat knife(K55K) and 2 Mercator variants made by the new K55K owner Otter and of course the French Douk-Douk is represented. As far as price point goes, what would you consider to be the “Point of Diminishing Returns” for folders, and for fixed blades? What knife models best represent this point in your opinion?
@jb7707
@jb7707 Жыл бұрын
For a folder I would say it's around $120 to $150 you can get many spyderco knives, benchmades or houge for that range. To me a native 5 or a bugout can be had for around this price and you get a great functioning tool without much "unnecessary excess". For fixed blades I would actually say it's more like 70 or 80. You can get a buck 119 or a cold steel srk that would be perfectly adequate for most things. Lionsteel offers many outdoor fixed blades and a great value for premium materials. As far as kitchen fixed blades, Victorinox is king of value.

@@c62west -- Great question, but it's higher here in Europe. If you're wanting a Spyderco or Benchmade that doesn't have plastic handles, you're talking more like 200 euros. That's about the cost of an Osbourne or a Paramilitary 2 in G10. Para 2 in blue G10 with S110v is £210. Hogue EX3 is £213. Also: diminishing returns doesn't mean 'how cheap can you buy a knife for that'll meet your needs'. You can buy an Opinel or a Mora for £10 that'll do what you need. What the question is about is what's the point at which you have to spend a lot more money to get a tiny increase in quality. That's the question that's interesting IMO.

Hello DCA, this is my first posted question. I have been looking for a US made scout style pocket knife with modern materials. I have my original Camillus cub scout knife but it would break my heart if I broke or lost it while carrying it. I'd like it to include the classic tool set up with a cap lifter/ flat head sd, main drop point blade, can opener, and awl. A Phillips SD would be awesome too. Ive tried to like the Leatherman swiss army alternative, but I can't stand the Philips head on it, it is just too narrow and strips the screws. Swiss army gives you a real Philips, but it isn't US made. WR case used to make a scout knife, but they discontinued it for some reason. I appreciated your video from 2020 covering "Best First Knives," but I'm wondering if you have anything to recommend as perhaps a more advanced "Cool Uncle" knife for older kids - i.e. something quality and longlasting, but also fun and fidgety. Happy spending season! -Beef

What if Knife makers back in WW2 could choose a knife steel today, what would be their choice? Two parts. Infantry soldiers, and let's say a Field Marshal for the high end choice.

They want cheap tough and economical, probably something either 10-series or 420 H.C.

If you're going to buy a straight razor, don't forget that you'll need stones and strops as well. You won't get away with it on a budget.

So true. When I got into straight shaving, I knew skimping on strop and stone would be a bad idea. So glad I came to that conclusion - the other thing to not be frugal with is the soap or cream (I prefer cream), as lower-end product just doesn't get a decent lather.

Hey fellow knife lovers! Looking for a new knife, I want a flipper tab but no spring, its harder for me to close one handed. I prefer washers over ball bearings in the pivot and I like the liner locks for one handed closing. I prefer bigger knives as well. Anyone got any ideas for my very specific tastes?

Hi DCA, I have one question: I really like a “Banneret” knife by CIVIVI, but would like to see it in more premium materials. Do you have any plans to have KC exclusive model of this knife in premium materials or, maybe you can recommend some other knife made in premium materials but in same style as Banneret?

Hey DCA, for Christmas my Mom wants a serrated kitchen knife and a general use kitchen knife. She doesn't do complex fancy cutting (her words), and she's not great at sharpening. Any recommendations under $100?

Hey David, I'm looking for a gentleman's/executive folder. I'd like titanium or steel scales, and under $130 would be nice. I'm a lefty so an ambidextrous pocket clip would be appreciated. P.S. I'll be sure to notify you and Thomas if/when I open a restaurant near Virginia :)

Hey, i'm from Germany and have a little bit of a problem. It is not allowed to carry a knife that is possible to open with one hand and locks. So is there a knife without an opening "help" like thumbstuds, hole etc. that locks. I know there are backlocks, but I would like to have something I can Close with one hand.

Is there a single hand-held sharpener for multiple steel types that is idiot proof? I suck at sharpening, apparently. Not really interested in machines with multiple belts, etc.

Sorry to disagree, DCA. The front finger choil is part of the Praxis design and what makes it such a great knife for me. Had it been omitted from the mini, it would have been a miss.

Non knife guy question here. I'm a medical cannabis user and I would like a small blade that I could use for chopping up my flower like back in the old days. I don't want scissors, I want a blade. (A grinder is efficient, but not very Hands-On if that makes sense.) If you could point me in the right direction of where to look, I would appreciate that very much. Thank you. (edit - sub $60 preferably)
