Fun Story: One time I walked into a knife shop and was just looking around. A man behind the counter noticed me browsing the glass display cases and very helpfully approached. "Is that a Cold Steel AD-15 in your pocket?"he asked, nodding to the AD-15 indeed clipped in my pocket. I turned and responded, "No, I'm just very happy to see you." He rolled his eyes and turned back around, walking away. However, an older man behind the counter erupted into laughter and the two of us spent a very enjoyable quarter hour looking at and talking about knives😂 Long story short, I like the new segment name!

For Tom’s question about a concealable fixed blade, please look at the Cold Steel Mini Tac Bowie. At less than $19, the 8Cr blade is stainless and thinner than the BK11, yet both slicier and stabbier than either the Sea Horse or the BK11. It’s plenty tough for whatever you might put a neck knife through and the sheath is streamlined for minimal printing through a shirt. It has lots of belly for food prep and for most chores. I wear mine every day and touch it up with a steel or strop. Ergos are great!

I used to conceal carry a colonel blades low vz. I don't think they're still being produced, but it was a pretty cool knife. You could carry it appendix style because it had a pistol grip style handle so there was no way anyone would know that you had a fixed blade on you. I stopped carrying it, because you can produce a folder just as fast, and it doesn't draw weird stares as much when used for regular tasks in public. It still has a place on my backpack behind my ifak though. Love that knife.

Hey DCA, what is your favorite "fidget" knife? Or some knives with lots of "fidget factor"?
@natek19933 жыл бұрын
OTF knives are forsure the most fidgety
@garrettferrell68213 жыл бұрын
I agree with Nate,nothing beats an OTF for fidget factor..side folding autos are pretty fun as well but not as much as the double action OTF...as for non-automatic knives the SOG Terminus XR is a lot of fun because it has 3 opening methods.you can open it with the flipper tab,the thumb stud or you can pull back the XR lock and wrist flick it.the XR lock is SOG’s version of the Benchmade AXIS lock so it also closes smoothly.mentioning the Benchmade AXIS lock it pretty much goes without saying,most of their knives are great fidget knives..I’ve always enjoyed the fidget ability of the Spyderco PM2,PM3,Shaman,etc..basically,if it has the compression lock and the Spydie hole,it’s gonna be fun to play with..can’t forget the push button locks either like the Pro-Tech Malibu or the newer versions of the Civivi Elementum w/push button lock

Hope you can help me out with another one similar to my 1st question: I'm looking for a folding knife, with the following features: 1) Flipper (that becomes a "guard") 2) Axis or Similar Cross-Bar Lock (**MUST** be bank-vault, bomb-proof strong) 3) Thumb Hole, either oval or round, doesn't matter, but **MUST** have it... 4) About 3" or more Blade Length 5) Pointy, not Wharncliffe, but needs some belly. 6) Optional, but would be game-winning: Full Flat Grind, finger choil, assist or bearings in the pivot and Deep Carry Pocket Clip 7) See if you can recommend me a budget and a premium version each. Thanks so much!

Hi David. My regular EDC for the past 15+ years was the CRKT Point Guard designed by Crawford. It's been an excellent small job workhorse for me, although it did need to be sharpened often to keep its edge. One of my favorite aspects of the knife was the LAWKS locking system. You always talk about the safety concerns about a non-locking knife closing on your fingers. As a kid in the Boy Scouts I remember learning that you shouldn’t be putting pressure on the blade of a knife in any direction other than toward the blade. In that sense, you’re only going to have a knife snap on your fingers if you aren’t using it appropriately. Are detent knives really a problem, or is it just that too many people aren’t using their tools as they were intended?

But I would really like to know if there is any evidence of any safety concerns when slicing foods, especially acidic fruits with a coated blade? And, if I were to buy the BK11, how would I go about removing the coating without damaging the blade?

I'd tried to lead him away from that, or at least open him up to the idea of a non-tanto blade, but he's determined. He wants something in the 4-ish" range, and under $100 would be best, if possible. Hey DCA: I've been admiring the recent work from Work Tuff gear. That said, I'm still a little mystified with their preferred steel of SK85 which I have never heard of before and can't seem to find a lot about on the intranet. Could you assist by breaking it down for us in terms of it's attributes: for instance is it carbon steel, stainless, or tool steel? Also how is it's wear resistance, toughness, corrosion resistance, etc. Finally can you compare it to another well known steel that would have comparable attributes so I can get a general sense of how it performs? Many thanks!
@garrettferrell68213 жыл бұрын
SK85 is a carbon steel and from my understanding it is very comparable SK5 which is most comparable to 1080 carbon steel.in other words,it should be slightly tougher than 1095 and 1095 should have slightly better edge retention but doubtfully enough to really be able to see a difference.in other words,if you own any knives in 1095 I would expect similar performance.the only knives I have in SK5 is a Cold Steel Recon Tanto and a Cold Steel SRK which are both pretty great especially for the low $40-$50 price point.I really can’t see much of a difference between SK5 and my knives in 1095.the SK5 SRK isn’t as good as other models of the SRK because the tip is a bit thinner which makes for a weaker more likely to snap off tip.that isn’t due to the quality of SK5 steel but more so Cold Steel cutting corners to sell it at a lower price.this is a little disappointing considering their old discontinued Carbon V and AUS8 SRKs didn’t have this problem and were more in line with the higher end San Mai and CPM-3V SRK...with all that being said,I’ve heard nothing but great things about Work Tuff Gear knives.if you see a particular WTG knife that you really want,I would order it soon because after they sale out you may not see that particular model ever again.they used to sale their knives on Amazon and it seems like they do a run of each knife and when they sale out they are pretty much gone for good and when they make more knives they are only focused on making newer models of knives.at least that was the case a couple years ago,maybe now they are going the route of most knife manufacturers where they will make and sale the same models of knives for a few years before they are discontinued

I am starting a new job where I'll be in maintenance. I was wondering what would be a good hard use knife for that. I have large hands, and like smaller fixed blades (the USMC Kabar is too big, but something like the LT Wright Next Gen looks about perfect for the handle, but I like a 3.5-4" blade). But for this job I'd like a folder that mimics that feel of that nice full handle, has a 3.5-4" strong drop or clip point blade, uses a strong lock like an axis, and has a super steel that would hold up to some abuse (light prying tasks like cutting zipties, manipulating wires, etc). I really like the sound of Magnacut steel, but it is only available in either the Hogue Deka or that Lionsteel hawkbill blade, and neither design seem very tough. Budget would be up to $200, but having a premium steel that can take and hold an edge while standing some abuse is top on the list. Thanks. I love the videos, keep up the great work!

Going with the Esee Izula II and the Realsteel Alieneck Hawkbill. Now say that ten times in a row. Fast.

I once bought a lot of knives from a storage unit clerk for $85 it had several leathermans, a benchmade 940, and vintage Gil Hibbens late 60s skinning knife. I made a lot of money off that deal but do regret selling that hibbens knife (even though I sold it for $800)

Hello Mr. Anderson. I have a slightly larger than average question for you this week. If early primitive man had gained access to a time machine and came to you personally requesting only one single knife (or design) to take with them, what would you send them back with? I'm thinking something in terms of usage of course but maybe also something representative of the technological progress of the past century-ish. Maybe make some fun of it and ask the guy behind the camera who eats steak with his bare hands, and the guy you keep in the closet until summoned as well. Haha. Ps... this was tough but I think I would go with the Buck 119 Pro.

Hey DCA! I want to follow yours and Seth's trend and shave my head. What knife would you recommend for that? P.s. I would buy a shirt that says "Slightly larger than average" on it. Any chance for merch?

When you showed Le Duck, I thought of a knife called the Bull Trout, I think. Brown micarta and heavy stonewashed blade.

Hey guys! My son and I were just discussing that I do not have a pair of scissors in the house (other than small mustache scissors). I explained as a knife fan, there is seldom a situation where a knife can’t do as good or a better job. Thoughts?

The Hellfyre Double Shadow ( or one very similar by Hibben) was actually featured in the movie Star Trek : Nemesis. Carried by the villain Shinzon. Not the best Star Trek movie but featured some cool Gil Hibben knives. He also designed some Klingon knives too.

I'd like to see a Ka-Bar mini about 7-7.5 inch overall length with a belt/boot sheath.

Hey DCA, quick question that probably doesn't have an answer. What would you suggest for something similar to the half breed large bush for half the price? Wouldn’t mind a smaller size. But I do like the look and the sheathing.
