As a novice at knives, I'm glad to have the term blood groove explained in plain english! Too many times I've heard those 2 words bandied about loosely and I avoided buying knives with that negative stigma attached to them. Too many times I was told a little ol' granny like me didn't need a hard core knife with a blood groove! Now I know better! I've learned a lot here watching these videos and Dave does an excellent job. Kudos to him and The Knife Center!

No matter how many times you guys keep repeating it WRONG blood grooves have more to do with ease of extraction and breaking a vacuum rather than weight savings. How do you explain kitchen Santoku "hollow edge" knives? How do you explain the Microtech Navy Scarab OTF? How do you explain GLOCK Maritime firing pin cups? Ka-Bar most certainly knows what they are for on the USMC 1942 as well. You guys just keep repeating the same misinformation as facts. I've been going at it with some mallninja kids the last few days on another gun channel about the same thing. But Wikipedia says...... They don't know what they are talking about. Anyone who has had U.S. Military bayonet or combat knife training will say the same thing I do. You were trained to twist and extract. If that doesn't work you stomp with your foot downward for counter pressure. If that still doesn't work you fire a shot and that should do it to get it back out.

Never could remember their names. I always called them the round hole and the square hole. As for the fullers in a knife, many of us were taught as kids that they were blood grooves. It was a name that caught on and a lot of people used.

Be sure to mention that to George Patton, Who wrote a treatise on knife blade features and their purposes while he was a student at West Point.Yeah, THAT George Patton.Grooves today in blades are often used to cut down on blade friction as it goes through materials. These are common on everything from certain kitchen knives, where they usually run vertically, to custom knives like Busey.Fullers found on fighting knives also increase rigidity, useful in thrusting. Saving weight is only a small part of the reason for a fuller.

The Ontario RAT 2, (Tiawan) is a hard-working large-ish pocket knife in D2 that's PERFECT for knife people who want to spend less. If they're giving one to a young person, are prone to loosing knives, use them especially hard or need it for a loaner it's a great choice. NEVER loan a workmate your "special," pretty (or handsome)knife, that you keep razor-sharp.

The way I explain it is to imagine the strength of a flat bar of steel being bent in half vs an "I" beam. You've added four extra dimensions of strength in the material. The extra points of tension should add more structural integrity. It has multiple purposes but that one is my favorite.

Hi David, What knives represent the Combat, Survival and Fight knives and what makes them each a select niche?
@nothim7321
@nothim7321 2 жыл бұрын
Marketing, firstly. Use, secondly. A "combat" knife is a knife that wiuld be useful for a soldiers in a combat secenario. What does that mean? Well it should be useful as a weapon in an emergency (should have usable point), but mostly a strong, stout tool that a soldier could use to cut things, open things and, most importantly, look cool. A "survival" knife is a knife useful in a situation where ones life may depend on it for continued existence. Strong enough for heavy cutting tasks, nimble enough for fine tasks. May or may not be pointed, but would increase its ability for emergency defense against potential predators or for game hunting. A fighting knife is a weapon first and a utilitarian tool secondarily or not at all. A point is an absolute must, an edge isn't. Some people migh break this down further to a knife designed to fight other people armed similarly, so an edge might be useful, but really, unless you live in a country still afflicted with machete duels, this whole category, while cool, is a bit overrated. If you are using an edged weapon as a primary means of self defense, get trained, please.

Hi DCA, question about trying to find my first front flipper for my newly started collection. I try to keep a budget of around $150, and worry finger safety with a front flipper with liner and frame locks, since i'm losing the thumb guard that a traditional flipper tab gives me. What would you suggest for a front flipper that either has finger safe locking mechanisms, or has something similar to a traditional tab or at least a larger finger choil that can still act as a guard? Thanks. PS. I have looked at the Kizer Cormorant, but I typically don't like the look of clip points, so bonus if it also is a drop point or spear point, since i think those are some of the best looking blade shapes.

I have a question: how do design licenses work in the knife world? For example, the original Emerson tomahawk was made by Emerson (or at least under their direction and specifications) and then I believe was moved to the American Tomahawk Company for manufacture. Now that ATC no longer makes them, and Emerson no longer makes them - what happens to the design? I assume that’s specified in any contract? Related question: it was a great design, why isn’t anyone making it anymore? Seems like everyone makes ‘hawks now, so I would have thought it would be a more profitable design than ever… Thanks for taking the time to answer!

Hi Dca. The term blood groove is war related, it comes from the daggers they used for the bayonettes. Frequently the dagger broke during combat. As you may know, it’s possible to limit an hemorrhage if you leave a blade inside the wound. It’s almost impossible with these old daggers because of the said grooves. So I may say the term exists but is used incorrectly. Nowadays, as the purpose doesn’t exist anymore. By the way you are totally right, they are no blood grooves nowadays, just fullers. Even in tactical environment, you are not supposed to loose hold of your blade so the blood grove becomes useless. Have a knife day! ☮️

Hi David, I see many traditional knives with multi blades, like Case knives. Why are there not many options for double bladed knives with lock mechanism's? For example, the Bugout with two blades. Both blades open the same way to take advantage of the handle ergonomics. One blade coated, one blade not coated. The blades could be the same , or different. This would give a lot of options.

Hey KC crew! Recently got a new pair of boots so naturally I had to get a new knife to boot carry. I ended up going with the Boker Mad Man, which I’m very happy with. It sacrifices on grip length to keep the chonky blade over 3 inches. One is never enough so I was hoping you had some recommendations for some alternatives. Trying to keep overall length sub 7” while maximizing blade length without feeling like I get a good purchase. Sheath would preferably be something I can slap an ulticlip on but leather with a clip works too. I’m partial to old school blade shapes like a clip point or bowie. For the handles I like materials that show age or patina, however I live in the middle of the desert so it’s gotta be able to withstand moisture(blade steel too). Go to town as I’m just trying to keep it under $350. Thanks! Edited for bonus points if it’s a Scandi grind.

I just need to point out that the anvil graphic used to make your point about the "fuller" creation would not actually remove weight from the steel sort of disproving the point you were making. The question remains, is the surface fuller feature physically helpful in displacing the "fighting" knife from gelatinous substrate? I think it would.

@FriedPi-mc5yt

No, it wouldn’t remove weight but it displaces metal to lengthen or broaden the blade. A fullered blade will be lighter in weight than an equally sized unfullered blade with similar grinds.
@eddielittleii8919
@eddielittleii8919 2 жыл бұрын
@@simonstokes369 The material in the anvil graphic is being displaced. It is a great deal simpler to grind depressions that removes weight, if that is the goal of the manufacturing process, than to heat and precisely strike the steel on both sides. I guess it's because you get more out of the steel you are working than grinding it away. I'm just saying the steel is still in the blade when it is displaced from the groove by the anvil process.

Thanks DCA. The whole 'blood grove' thing is a myth that just won't die!! Although the term 'fuller' is relatively new in the knife world (about 1800's), the use goes way back. As DCA indicates it's always been to help lighten the blade while maintaining strength. This may be done to simply make the blade easier to carry/use or to balance it out (some of the longest swords were very tip heavy & benefited from some weight reduction). As for the myth of a knife/bayonet getting stuck - has been tested numerous time and is very near impossible. In any case, if your blade is in so deep you can't get it out, I would suggest that the other person will no longer be in the mood to fight.

I would also point out the Urban myth of a fuller being about ease of removing the blade from a soft target might also be incomplete. In mythological theory it could also serve the purpose of adding stabbing into a soft target by giving a channel for blood to escape. ^_^

One poor kitten looked at its mother and asked how can a human not know what a blood grove is? Those cute designs we put on people when they touch a cat that doesn't want to be touched. @@mcsquirgle I mean, technically its a "full stick tang" as there are partial stick tang knives where it only goes partially into the handle and is pinned in place. So maybe that person's stance was formed based on that distinction?

@@mcsquirgle Yeah, unfortunately there is a lot of gray area in knife definitions. While its "technically" correct, functionally the term "full tang" has come to mean what you and I and 95% of all knife lovers agree on as a full height tang that goes the full length of the handle.

Hey DCA, lighten up on the anti-Swedes (dirty swedes) humor--I know you were jesting--I think..... As a long time customer of KC and owner of Swedish knives such as Mora, Fällkniven, and many with Sandvik steel (Sweden), I think that Sweden has given the knife world a fair number of legitimate contributions.

Howdy Dave! I'm looking for essentially a tactical paring knife, and I already have a couple Cold Steel Spikes, but I'm not super pleased with the steel. Looking specifically for a not very broad fixed blade, 4 to 5 inches, decent grip, better edge retention. Thanks in advance!

If you want the thin bladed slicing performance of a paring knife, the Benchmade Anonimus. If you're more interested in the appearance or a paring knife, the Real Steel Arbiter. There are 2 models that are currently out of stock but I think both are better fits for what you're after than the above 2 knives, check out the Spyderco Waterway Salt Series Fixed knife and the Norden Ascent. All the knives I mentioned will blow the Spikes out of the water in edge retention. Good luck!

Hey DCA, Lately, I’ve been experimenting with making complete knives with knife blanks and handle materials. There are not too many options out there other than Chinese made 440c blades. Condor makes a couple types and Spyderco has their Mule Team knives but those are hard to get. My question is why don’t more companies make knife blanks for people to make their own version of a knife? Is it a possible lack of profit or a liability issue? BTW I’m specifically talking about fixed blades not folders. Thanks

Hi DCA & Seth! Big fan from across the globe, keep up the good work. I am a doctor, working in Andaman, India. I love knives and have managed to spend nearly $1200+ dollars on knives over 7 years. But there's a problem - local retailers do not carry knives from any reputable brands, and international shipping and taxes bump up the cost of the knife to nearly triple - for instance, my last purchase, a Kershaw Shuffle was for for nearly $75. Such is the pricing problem, that I've never had the chance to experience Micarta. It's always too expensive. So, first question - do you know any reputable retailers that ship to India? I'd like to do better than Amazon and their very steep prices. And second question - do you have a recommendation for me? I'd like a folder 4-4.5 inches, stout and solid, pocket estate no issue - but not a clip point. Something that would cost me less than $200 dollars net. So, maybe around $85-90 for you? Spear point, and tanto are both preferred. Extra points for axis or crossbar lock if available.

I would pay a good amount of money for a Swiss Army Knife with tools I could select myself. I know there are after-market craftsmen who do this, but it would be great if Victorinox had it on their website as an option (the way you can design your own Nikes on their website). Do you know if they've ever done this or considered it?
