I would also suggest, if you want an even bigger knife, depending on the revolver you carry, either the Wild West Bowie, or the 1849 Rifleman's knife, both from Cold Steel. I carry the Rifleman's knife when packing my Colt 1851 Navy. Good combination. Looks good too.

Thank you for answering my 4,5 questions 😉 For a better understanding of my questions. I was batoning 1,5 inch sticks in 90 degree position with the blade on top of the logs. This went very well until the stoppin broke (the knife itself had no scratches). At that moment I had no other tools so the Elementum had to do the job. DCA is right about the elementum stoppin being very small/thin. If someone in the comments can advise me with a 3 inch flipper knife

Love segment on traditional blades. Many traditionals offer great performance with a nod to history. These designs have survived for a reason - they work. Although prices are going up I still like Condors due to their traditional styling. I often carry a bird & trout style knife when day hiking - light & nimble yet capable. Would love more content on traditionals (fixed or folders). Finally, if looking to process wood, the Elementum would be the last blade I'd pick! I'm surprised that the blade didn't brake. There are much better & cheaper fixed blades out there to do this. Thanks DCA. Sharp blades all.

Dustin needs to look into Pre-1840s Rendezvous. They're all over the country, historically accurate encampments. A surprisingly large following. A lot of knowledge can be found there. The magazine American Frontiersman is a fantastic resource. Most mountain men did not carry a huge bowie knife like that. Most of them carried a basic butcher knife (the Old Hickory he shows was the most common style), possibly modified, as they were shipped in bulk out west to be bought at Rendezvous. I'd also add that his assertion that the 5" blade is good for food prep and small game, sounds like he's never skinned a buck before. If you want to brain tan the hide and not butcher it all to hell, you're best skinning will come from a smaller blade, under 5" with a belly on it (like the Kephart). If you're butchering a buffalo or bear and don't have to worry about a thin hide, sure you can skin it with a bowie, but with today's selection of knives, a bowie is a useless novelty. Tyler - Stop being a nancy and teach your kids properly instead of making it taboo. If they're toddlers, simply don't leave it sitting on the damn ground. If they're 5 and older, they're old enough to learn how to properly respect and handle a knife. This pansy ass movement of hiding everything from your children is why accidents happen. Damn city people.

Another great "frontiers man knife" is the BPS Knives adventurer. More on the bushcrafy side I'd say it still fits. Comes with a nice thick leather sheath, fire steel, its a scandi ground full tang carbon steel blade, removable wood handle scales so you can make or add your own if you want, and it's about $45 give or take. Got one and I love it. They have other options too that might fit better so I highly recommend checking them out.

I have the Hudson Bay, and it is absolutely great! Modded the handle on the bottom to be a little flatter, and if i was dropped some random place on earth and could only have one knife, that would be my beast. I love it so much that i EDC the Mini Hudson Bay, which is also great!

Any complaints or thoughts on the mini Hudson Bay? I'm a huge fan of the large one, it was my go-to knife from way back when I only had a couple and I used and abused it for everything including some brutal batoning while camping and canoeing. Still have it but I retired it since I got paranoid about losing it.

I did end up modding the bottom front of the handle with a grinder to be the same height from the ring finger to the index finger to move the index finger about an eighth inch forward and eighth inch up. Also, i thinned the sides at the front of the handle so it tapers down for a better pinch grip. That done, it is a beautiful beast. I had reservations about the grind, how it's kind of a hybrid scandi/flat, but it carves and batons like a champ. The tip is not the finest, and i might mod it in the future, but overall i highly recommend it. I love it!

@@ergezinger Awesome. Having had the larger version(s) for years I know what you mean about those mods. My original one is actually a different style than the one I got much later (as a back up in case I lost my first). The original blade is just slab sided with no taper until the final scandi/convex grind that's about a centimeter long to the edge. The newer one is full flat grind tapering continuously until a small final scandi taper. The original has a lot of metal in it and I don't think I've seen another knife with quite the same style. It always performed really well and an amazing chopper for an 8inch blade and short handle. Might have to pick the mini up sometime just for shits n gigs.

The Condor Hudson Bay knife is a truly awesome blade, solid and reliable in addition to being pretty historically accurate. Another option for a large knife in that vein would be the Condor Moonshiner, which is slightly bigger. I also own another reasonably good example of a frontier trade knife - the Northern Heritage by Huntshield (but I think these are only available in Canada).

As the house kindling splitter up till I was fourteen years old I deny that a knife has any place in firewood preparation at all. A light hatchet and maybe a simple parallel cleaver (we used to call them firewood choppers) are all you need, and they do not need to be razor sharp, file sharp is good enough. If you have to swing a hatchet around enough to endanger your kids, I strongly feel you need to re-examine your choice of wood and where you are working ! PS I started at seven years old and although I cut myself a few times I still have all my fingers and never needed stitches !

The Condor Hudson Bay knife is great. I've had one for years, but it is a tad big for some camp tasks. So I recently bought the Mini Hudson Bay knife, makes a great companion knife to the big one. Hugh Glass most likely, before he lost his kit, probably carried Green River knives. These where the knives most chosen by Mountain Men and explorers. As for a Bowie knife. The Wild West Bowie from Cold Steel, would be a good "Big" knife, or the 1849 Rifleman's Knife by Cold Steel. I have the Rifleman's knife, and it pairs nicely with my 1851 Colt revolver.

Hi DCA! I'm buying too much knives. I currently have 9 folding knives + 1 fixed blade. At the beginning I was able to convince myself there was a reason behind this and it could help me to always have the perfect knife to cover any specific situation. In reality, even if I carry a knife everyday I don't really need to, and I don't use it that often. Is it jewelry? Is it a hobby? Is it fashion? is it a trend? Is it a tradition? How all of this started and where does this leads us?

It's just smart. It's utilitarian. It's a comfort. It's the one basic tool everyone pretty much needs to stay alive in the absence of 1st world goods availability. Sure I guess you could Knapp some flint or obsidian, but that's unlikely and most don't know how to these days. You never know when you'll need one, and it could actually save your life. Mine saved my life once. All real men carry a knife.

Depending on the person, knives can be jewelry/fashion, a hobby, a trend, or tradition... or some combination. Personally, I'd classify myself in the 'hobby' and 'tradition' categories. I got my first knife (Buck 110) from my stepfather when I was like 10yrs old. He had one from his father/grandfather, so he gave me one. I am not going to have any children but if I did, I'd give them a Buck 110 (maybe if my sister has a kid, I'll give one to them). Then, when I got older, I started collecting knives. I buy them as tools and prefer black or metal scales, so I wouldnt fall into the 'fashion/jewelry' category - my "fanciest" knives are just plain titanium scales. As for where it leads us... uhh... bankruptcy??

As for the knife-based multitool: Ruike S31. 2.1" 12C27 blade, scissors and a multipurpose tool (bottle opener, belt cutter and flathead screwdriver). Only 1.83oz weight and G10 scales. Only thing it lacks is a clip, but it's more of a keychain knife anyway. That particular one isn't offered by KC though, which is probably why it wouldn't be mentioned.

Worth noting, the SwissQlip is NOT compatible with the Victorinox Compact unfortunately, so the only option is a suspension clip or a stick on clip like the NiteIze HipClip.

David, I have been looking for a tough folding knife, full flat grind, compatible with food prep and noticed immediately that the flipper tabs, and to some extent the angle of the handle , interferes with using the full length of the blade, even when using a "pinch grip", on a cutting board, for example. Do you have any suggestions for a 4" (approximately) folder in the $100 +/- range that fits those parameters? (I'm left handed, but probably too much to ask? ...ambidextrious hopefully!) I currently use a CJRB Silax and a Real Steel Arbiter, both 5-1/4", for these tasks, which are both fixed blades.

Carbon steel can be used with flint to throw sparks. 1095 is cheaper and is softer, this easier to sharpen and maintain even if you only have a river stone to sharpen with. 1095 is THE trusty, reliable, functional steel. Best kitchen knife I ever used was an old hickory 1095. Scary sharp in 2 seconds. Doesn't need to be stainless.

FAQ question: In Spain, you can't carry weapons of any type in public places. But a key chain knife or large multitool is a reason to cary a blade. What is the largest main bladed tool, with a lock that actually looks like a multitool for last ditch defence. Something that can be explained away to the police.

You must have HUGE hands. I too have the Condor Hudson Bay knife, and for me, it fits my hands nicely. But if you need more grip. Go buy the tape used on Hockey sticks, and wrap the handle. I've heard a very people do that. As for a Lanyard hole, Didn't happen on the Hudson Bay knives, or Green River knives.

Hi DCA. I have recently started getting into bushcraft and like the look of the condor bushlore. While shopping around I found that condor sell blade blanks of this knife at a much cheaper price. What's the difference?. Is it just scales and sheath? Or is the blade/steel its self different?. Can I buy a blade blank, wrap the tang in paracord and essentially have the same knife? I really like what you did to your Swiss Army Knife with the TEC accessories suspension clip! Do you have a swiss-army-knife style multitool that you would recommend that could take the TEC clip, is light-weight (won't pull down scrub pants), has an oxygen wrench, knife, and scissors? As for an oxygen wrench, see if there is a Swiss Army knife for divers. I'm not sure though, if the valve on diving tanks is the same as in hospital tanks. Maybe something used by Fire Fighters and EMT's?

Why is the detent of some knives stronger or weeker. How does it work.? And can i adjust This. Please Show a Flipper with strong and weak detent. Please Show the Giantmouse jutland. Great knife. But is the detent a Little weak?

For the bushcrafter with small hands, do you have any recommendations for a larger bushcraft knife (5 inches or over) with a smaller handle? Most large knives have thick handles that can cause fatigue for those with small hands.

A folding knife can work great *if* you are willing to re-grind the blade. If you're not down with that I'd suggest getting a proper whittling knife.

Honestly, even with the extra implements, your best bet is something like the Victorinox Trekker or Outrider -DCA
