The Bivouac has that "surplus store vibe" because it was, in the late 90, the knife manufactured for the French troops. It was replaced by the Baroudeur around 2001 and by the CaC in 2018, all made by Tarrerias Bonjean.

The metal loop on the Bivouac sheath is for use on a Alice military belt fed through the open hole rivets. Excellent selection and list. I have 4 on it. The Opinel #8 is my "gentleman's knife" that I use when I order steak at the steakhouse instead of using their sacrilegious abomination of a "knife" that merely rips and tears my espensive cut of meat. My wife always rolls her eyes when I take it out, gently lock it, use my napkin to shine and prepare the blade and then lovingly place it in it's rightful place setting...

Hello from France. Concerning the Bivouac knife from TB Outdoor, it was the French army's knife for eating in the field. The can opener does its job well and it is not a crutch on the case but the special attachment provided for old French army belts. Details given to you by the former soldier that I am and who has often used them. P.S.: the backlock on the military version had a defect. If you put enough force on the blade, you could close it.

I have a Mora and an Opinel. Love them both. I could easily use many of the ones you showed. All great values. The two others I really like are the Alox Bantam and the Ria. The Ruik and the Penguin.are runners up.

That PF Pub is a revelation. As for the SAK, I prefer the keychain-sized Rambler (or the blade-free variant for flying, the Jetsetter) because it’s small enough to take anywhere and scissors are always good to have. I rarely have to open cans anyways. 😛

👍 glad to see a few fixed blades. Got a Boker Trail for about 2 years now perfect medium size for appendix/groin carry. Yet enough surface to wield. 440A. 50 bucks. No parts no noises. Have come to the realisation, to me a folder has become a tool. The fixed blade has become an extension. Very nice and!

My go to EDC was a CRKT Triumph (Assisted). I carried that for nearly 10 years and rarely had to sharpen it. I gave it to my son because he really liked it and couldn't find one after they were discontinued. I replaced it with a CRKT Hootenanny and absolutely love it. It doesn't hold an edge quite as long as the Triumph did, but you can get this thing wicked sharp...and it doesn't shred my jeans pocket.

I have a few knives over $100 but lately "cheap" (budget friendly😁) knives are my go to when looking for a new addition to my little collection. there are certainly hundreds of very interesting and good knives, BUT remaining with the essentials and considering cost-utility I stick with 3 that I always carry: 1 for food prep and general use, the Opinel (inox), 2 for general use and "multitool" the Victorinox Pioneer or Huntsman, and 3 for bushcrafting, of course the Mora Companion! I honestly do not see the point for spending more than this amount of money, and this being so it is no drama when you loose or break such tools.

I bought the Kizer Amicus off the back of DCA's endorsement and it instantly became one of my favourites. If it came in 14C28N it would be number one. Please consider doing a knifecenter exclusive version with that steel! Maybe micarta handles too?

I picked up the Opinel no.112 paring knife set in 12C27. Needed some new smaller prep knives for the kitchen. Not that my spideychef or Carribean can’t handle the task. Just, they are not always handy when I need a kitchen knife. Sometimes they are, sometimes not. So, these Opinel are filling in the gap. They are super thin and slicey like any good paring knife, factory edge is honed quite well. And the 12C27 should hold my edges quite nicely. 🙌🏻

I have 3 different Moras and they are fantastic knives I like the one with the firs starting ability. The Opinel is a razor but you need too remember that it has a manual locking device too keep the blade from folding up on your hand when using it. I recently bought the Victorinox Ranger Grip knife and I know it is not cheep, around 80.00, but it has all the tools needed for survival. It has a saw blade that really works and it has tools that can save your life in an emergency as well as a great camping tool.

I have an old SRK from circa 2002. It’s a beater knife that holds up to decades of hard use. It’s been on most camping and backpacking trips I’ve taken in that period. Absolute beast of a blade, but still light enough for lightweight backpacking.

In the last 10yrs after american, foreign, premium to budgets....the only knife that has stayed in my rotation has been the Ontario Rat 1. Some that are worthy mentions are: Mora heavy duty for extra strength, and cold steel kobun for it's stainless steel properties...all are definitely good buys indeed

I use a Mora stainless for kayak fishing with is almost exclusively in salt water. The handle is easy to grip when your hands are slippery. Great for cutting bait, cutting lines, rope, whatever. The steel is very stain resistant. I could use one knife for several years but i usually buy a new one every year. After about a year it'll have some corrosion on it, but it'll still work great. If being on a kayak is constantly getting sprayed with saltwater. I love these knives.

The Victorinox Rambler is the one that should be on there for me. $20ish and is perfect if you have kids and have to change the batteries or need a thin blade for packages and so on. It’s a pocket dropper and regardless of pants, it goes in unnoticed. Also, I am a big knife lover like most but I love the SRKC over the SRK for all the reasons that you mentioned. It’s just lighter and better to carry. As always, great choices. Thanks guys. Always love to see Seth join in.

Hi guys, I am from South Africa. I am a knife lover and collector. I really enjoy your channel Dave, great videos! I have quite a collection, Benchmade and Kershaw was always my favorite. I recently bought a South African knife called the Honey Badger for, well in dollar terms, $55. And man, am I impressed. The quality is next level and believe it earns a spot on this list. Hope you can get hold of one to see for you self. I bought the medium size with wharncleaver blade in D2 steel. It is a liner lock flipper with ball bearing and I just love it. Decades ago in the Army, we were in the field for an extended period of time. This was an Army Special Forces ARTEP. I was not in the Special Forces. My unit was tasked to be "insurgents" for the Special Forces team to "organize and train". Several guys brought along large fixed bladed camping knives, yet the guys in my unit kept borrowing my el cheapo 2.5" (maybe 2.75") Gerber folding knife. It did not even have a liner. My tiny folder was much more hand for cutting 550 cord, sharpening stakes for tiedowns or skewers, cutting fabric, opening MREs, etc.

TB Bivouac! Ive had what i now believe is a cheap knock-off of this now for 21 years. Bought it from a surplus dealer at a market when i was 18. Interestingly, i paid $20 AUD for it back then. Mine doesnt have a brand on the blade, but has been used nearly every day since i bought it in my lunch box at work. Love it! A few breaks in the plastic body but still fuctions just as well as the day i bought it. Awesome! 👍👍

I have everything from Rough Ryders to Randalls with many points in between. (I need a couple more machinist's chests for all fo them. I have Moras stashed in kits in the Jeep, one in the kitchen, and a couple here and there. You could do quite well with a Mora and an Opinel, and the ability to actually use a knife as a knife. The SAK in many variations, is awesome. I had the original Cold Steel SRK in the Army in Alaska a good while ago. Gave it to my son. Finally, had to get a replacement all these years later. Got the new SRK in SK5. Great knives still, so got the Compact too. One knife you probably don't carry, and should, is the Canku C1141. Kwaiken-style blade in D2, ball bearings, G10 scales, and flips open with just the pressure to break the detent. It's also light, slim, and easy to carry. I picked up my first one up online (not saying where) for $19.95. So impressed I bought another for backup. Ended up gifting it. Got another, and gifted it. Finally got another to have on hand. They've gone up to $26.95 now. Y'all should look into them. Despite having a ton of knives from slip joints, to lock blades, to fixed from inexpensive to the Randalls. My EDC is that Cancu for general cutting, a SAK Trekker serrated for cutting boxes, and whatever I need for the tools, and a SAK Manager for a few little things it does better. I definitely have $100 or less in all three. Probably a little more now to buy, but not much. I almost feel guilty for not carrying my higher-end, fancier knives daily. But, this combo works so well for me that I just fondle my other ones once in a while and just keep carrying what works and doesn't weigh me down. P.S. No, I won't tell anyone where I got the Canku. Not fair to KnifeCenter who is providing these videos and I don't want y'all driving up the price. ;)

The TB Outdoors Bivouac is made from X46Cr13-steel and I like the separate fork and spoon. My favorite Go-To-knife is the Mora Companion, which is available in High Carbon as well as stainless 12C27, plain or partially serrated, 2,5mm or 3,2mm(1/8") thick and even with a blunt tip ("Rescue") or a built-in ferrorod ("Spark").

I bought the Ruike P801 because of this video and it's the best knife for the money I have ever owned. I cant believe it was only $30. If it cost me $100 I wouldn't have felt like it was a bad deal. It's not just a great cheap knife, it's a great knife period. I think I'm done buying benchmade because the osborne I bought recently doesn't have the strength of this knife and it was 6 times more expensive.

Consider the OKC Shikra as an cheap edc. I am at the moment (rotating out my para 3, which I love). Titanium frame lock flipper, deep carry ambi clip with micarta scale. Works well as simple slicer. Easy aus-8 blade maintenance. Under $40.

Great format, you get to the point and keep it simple. The Mora basic or companion makes an excellent gift to anyone. Just buy 10 Morakniv basics or companions and put them in your vehicles, tackle boxes, tool boxes, junk drawer, belt carry, etc... After a year, if you find your knife needs weren't met, then spend as much as you can for that unicorn of a knife that fits that 1% that let you down. Spend the savings on guns, ammo and guitars. 😂

The metal wire thing on the Bivouac is a military style hook that attaches to a military belt with holes in them. In the army, my bayonet sheath had one which allowed me to attach it to my belt, which usually contained lots of other hooks for water bottle, grenade pouch, etc.

The Sencut Sachse is an alright choice. I think I like the CJRB Pyrite more, for a few bucks more. Still getting the button lock, great thumb studs, great action and essentially a powder metallurgy version of the 9Cr18MoV on the Sachse. The Sachse is a bit larger though, so maybe the CJRB Chord would be a better comparison

I'm curious on if QSP is planning on replacing the washers with bearings on the Penguin with newer production runs like they did with the Parrot V2. Having an old and new Parrot, I can say the action isn't discernably different between the two so bearings aren't much of an advantage there; I'm ambivalent to the change though.

The Bivouac "foil cutter" is a bottle/can opener combo. Used forward as normal its a bottle opener, but the blade cant reach right for cans. To use as can opener stab it straight down through the lid till the thumb stud rests on the rim and rock the blade up through the lid from the inside similar to the old claw type. RoughRider also has blade type can openers on some models, but w/o the bottle opener notch

Interesting take on SAKs. Now, for me SAK = multi-tool knife, period. So, despite how against the grain it is for me to admit, this knife does actually fit the definition, as you guys explained. Therefore I must capitulate! However, however, I would still carry a bulkier version! I've sort of settled for one of the 4-layer knives for a few decades and been very satisfied! I've also had a Swiss Champ for nearly all that time. But, I now really fancy the Hercules! It's just that little bit bigger and chunkier with a good array of tools. I'd go for the belt sheath, but I would also use my favourite lanyard and snap-hook carry method I've always used for my 4-layer. It is handy hanging inside the pocket but not weighing down the trousers, as it hangs off the belt. To use, I unsnap the snap-hook and do what's needed. Works a treat! Have a great day guys, Cheers

Oooh I think I see a P801. Still one of the best $30ish knives on the planet and has been for many years. Modernizing it with the T8 hardware and ceramic bearings and detent ball meta are the only changes it needs.

Where can you find better bearings? I saw a review on Amazon that said they switched from bronze to plastic bearings to keep the price the same.

The sr1 lite truly the best beater knives on the market. Good size different blade options the knife does just about anything.

I like the looks of the RIA. Simple and elegant. Agree about the mora. But, I’ve never liked opinel. That style does nothing for me. The one I had was super loose. Glad to see the QSP but I suggest the hawk. Purely on stylistic grounds. I’m very fond of my Camillus mini bushcraft. Not sure I’d recommend it. For an SAK, I live your suggestion but the Forester is more up my alley. I live the bantams thinness. That is super appealing. Too many SAKs are bricks. Too many tools. Does everything but nothing well. I didn’t see a mini-machete (or kukri) which I’d like to put on my ten must haves….except the lock that sencut looks like my hawk. I’d add honey badger. My daughters 1024 is super cute. Too small for my hands. But I still love it. I want to grab a petrified fish option. Maybe not that one but I’m intrigued. For the bar lock category, I’d like to lay hands on the bestechman Ronan. That cold steel doesn’t speak to me. But their SRK-c is to my liking. Another on my wish list. Circling back, there’s several RATs I’d like to get. Fixed and folding. Considering that bushcraft brought me to world of knives so I’ll plug my beloved, my condor Bushlore. I’d get the aqualore today if I were to do it again. Some nice options. Based on the lack of bandages, I see it’s time to go shopping for more blades! Thanks for a great list. I only go cheap so this is awesome. I may have more than 10 here….oops! 😄

SRM 9201, I work mine hard, it's easy to sharpen and keeps a sharp blade.

Although, our belts in the 90s and 2000s and bayonet sheaths had the same hook system, and the French are just no moving away from their f1 etc systems which use it

No...not sad...these two are just young modern experts. We of the "Old School"..especially those with combat arms military experience...have to smile when we see them dumbstruck, drawing a blank and without an explanation...for their chosen subject. But, we've got to cut them some slack. Only a very small percentage of the living...have had experience with that type of belt attachment gear. I learn a great deal from these men and appreciate their videos.

The TB outdoors knife has the metal thing maybe for a belt and maybe keeping ur spoon and fork off the ground/table to keep clean
