Gotta admit, I was mesmerized watching this! Felt like I was 8 years old again. That kid was paying so much attention to the work at hand that he will absolutely learn something. Not only a skill, but how to take direction and apply it to life. Man, our kids today are doomed!

I was in the Boy Scouts and loved it. Spent several Summers up in the Sierra Mountains working on merit badges, completed the woodcarving badge and many others. All useful life skills for someone not scared to go outside their house. There are entire generations of boys growing up now that will never have these skills and that is truly sad. At least they'll be able to join the Girl Scouts and sell cookies.

I just picked up a Schrader carving knife on eBay. I'm heading up to the hobby store later today to get some balsa wood to try it out!

You'll want basswood blocks. Balsa is too soft and stringy for whittling, especially smaller or detailed pieces.
