You know everything has gone to complete hell when you see Batman using the very same weapons that were used to slain his parents just to survive, this possible nightmare showed the serious dangers of what could happen if Superman ever turned rogue and joined forces with Darkseid. This scene was jaw droppingly beautiful, from the entire world being reduced to a post apocalytpic wasteland to Batman fighting for his life in full on Mad Max fury mode battling against Parademons and soidiers inculding Flash's message from the future about Lois being the key, it had everything. The only thing that would have made this scene even more epic if we saw Superman appear at the end of the dream sequence with a full beard, long hair, glowing red eyes and wearing either the black suit or something similar to his Apokolips uniform from STAS, i think it would have been the cherry on the cake. A Knightmare movie in the DCEU would have been unbelievable.

@Michael B Don't get me wrong. I also think that all the Knightmare scenes in BvS and ZSJL are perfect. I even have more to say about them than you do. After the destruction of Metropolis, Bruce was convinced that Superman is such a powerful threat that he will either destroy the world or rule it. And the thing is, obviously we think Bruce is wrong to want to kill Superman. Except that the genius of the writing of the Knightmare scene in BvS, is that not only does it foreshadow the events of JL2 and 3, but it also implies that Superman is responsible for them. Today, we know that the Knightmare would have happened because of Darkseid at the end of JL2. But in 2016, we didn't know that. We thought it would have been Superman going crazy after losing Lois (as it happened in Injustice), and on top of that Flash from the future says that Bruce was right about Superman being a threat. Clearly, in addition to foreshadowing the events of JL2 and 3, it gives us doubts about the current conflict of BvS because we're not sure who's right. And it's exactly the same in ZSJL. The JL is in the process of resurrecting Superman, when suddenly Cyborg has a vision of the future where he sees the Knightmare coming with Superman turned villain because he will be controlled by Darkseid. Clearly, we think that resurrecting Superman now may not be such a good idea after all. It gives a lot more weight to the debate of resurrecting Superman, even more so when the Kryptonian ship insists on not doing so. And finally after Cyborg's vision of the future when Superman finally returns, and the Kryptonian ship says, "The Future has taken root in the present," the whole resurrection of Superman has become an irreversible event that will cause heavy consequences in the future. All this, further foreshadowing the events of JL2 and 3. Personally, I've never seen a movie use the foreshadowing tool so well. Except that unfortunately, many people in 2016 were clearly not smart enough to understand the genius of the Knightmare scenes. And so those scenes were seen as too forced to announce a sequel, and so people didn't like them too much. That's why I think actually, in BvS just having Barry from the future warning Bruce would be enough. It sufficiently announces ZSJL1, 2 and 3, it gives doubt about the actual conflict of BvS because Barry explains Superman in the future seems to have become evil, and it's not at all a forced scene to announce the sequel because it lasts barely 30 seconds. People would have appreciated it a lot more. So people in 2016 would have hated BvS less, so WB would never have turned ZSJL into the Josstice League, ZSJL would have been released in theaters in 2017, and so JL2 would have been released in 2019 and JL3 in 2021, so we would have a whole Knightmare movie by now.

About Dawn of Justice Theatrical version was basically Warners executives interference cutting out important scenes and choosing the title "Batman v Superman".
