A ball being kicked around doesn't take much, you just need a ball, a flat field and a handful of stones to mark the gates. That way many people can play it, and therefore relate to. Soccer is a people's game unlike Jousting.

Medieval tournaments weren't just about Jousting (even when it was the main event). There was also sword duels, archery, horse racing and other minor fighting contests... It was also a chance for smiths to offer their craft and services, and for trovadours to make some name of themselves with songs and poetry. Most would end up scholars or serving in king's army or simply wandering the land in search of opportunity. If said titles were split between the heirs it would break one strong realm into couple of weaker separated entities which would make things complicated for everyone including their suzerain. Not to mention all heirs would have de-jure rights on their brothers lands and are able to wage wars on eachother which they would totally do if they are in a positions of +-equeal power and it was kinda of reoccuring theme during early medieval european history before patrilineal primogeniture become videly spread.

In early Qing dynasty we Chinese army wore padded armour (a type of composite armour looked like your Brigandine or Gambeson) which was made of cotton, boiled leather and a few iron plates, fixing by some brass rivets. However, it was not good enough to protect soldiers from attacks, the only improvement was that soldiers could keep warm in north part of China during the winter. On the contrary, after centuries of exploration, you guys mastered advanced metallurgical techniques and finally forged the masterpiece-the plate armour. I must admit you guys are wonderful, no wonder you guys rise from the Dark Age.

As far as the Qing dynasty goes, whatever armor they had were rapidly being outclassed by the development of firearms. Plate armor was largely being phased out since they more or less were ineffective and a burden. At the time, the breastplate was the primary armor piece that was of any value and given a few more decades, armor was more or less abandoned. The plate armor was developed early on and it was an effective means of keeping knights protected for most of the medieval period, but it was an affectation that was only afforded to those with means. If you were a serf... you take what you could get. It did afford a host of advantages to the knight as it made them effectively iron man in fights against the average soldier, but they were not universal.

the helmet shouldn't be allowed to come off, that isn't proper jousting armour. Historically the helmets were fixed to the breast plate so that you couldn't move your head. This prevented the helmet from falling off and it also helped to prevent neck injuries as it limited the range of motion.

I think the reasoning behind that is mostly for safety. They would rather not have their "knights" be impaled during every show, so they make safer designs of armour, and use lances that don't have the capability of stabbing someone.
@Cissy2cute7 жыл бұрын
Maximvs Victa - I love your idea. Just so you know Shane and company also go around to schools/outings explaining history, not just about jousting. I have a degree in history and would love to bring it alive and let people know it is exciting, not the boring stuff taught in so many schools.

You can be 100% certain the actual riders use padding underneath, otherwise they'd regularly end up in the hospital. They're just putting this on her for demonstration.

Jousters doesn't have to wear a full body armor lol Most of the historical jousting armor is a half armor the legs is protected by the horse armor
@amenthegreat37614 жыл бұрын
Ignoring that the armor itself looks terrible, it's not tailored to their bodies, it looks loose and gross, your helmet should never fall off during a joust.

I m Florian, I m 26 years old, im inlove with medieval times and animals, especially horses and dogs, i have a big collection of medieval collectibles backhome. i worked as an equestrian guide 6 years almost. going with the most 40 horses and tourists on the mountain, I can do horsestunts, i can shoot traditional bows very well, i can fight with medieval weapons, im helpfull in this kind of area and animals grooming, I m doing it good because its passion. I m searching for job, or even volunteering if i have acommodation and food. in this area, medieval jousting, reenactment, horse grooming or trekking. i would live happy forever in a medieval museum village or settlement. I can send some photos if you want, and i ll answer to any question you want. You can change my life and earn a brother for life ! please think about this and let me know, Sorry for my bad english and thank you ! Florian Miutu

I joined a group called the Ancient and Medieval Martial Arts Society in Sydney Australia in 1979. Some members were doing full contact late 12th/early 13th century jousting. So full suits of mail, barrel helms and heater shields, with the aim of unhorsing one's opponent. For the skill at arms, the brother of one of the jousters would stand, just wearing trews (no shirt, or helmet, etc) and with a holster holding a cigarette packet on his shoulder (this was the 1970s). His brother would then pick the cigarette packet off with a lance. Those brothers used to do a pretty impressive gladiator combat too.

I met a woman whose main source of income with making a knights' colors and the colors for the steed, as well. The work that went into an outfit (not the armor) is profound and an excellent set would cost a knight 1,000 to 1,200 dollars. So much goes into a making a superb set up that it's worth every penny. She didn't know what a set of armor would set a knight back, but it has to be a bundle! Does anyone venture to guess?
@thezokman7 жыл бұрын
Nowadays professional made armor by the best of the best I can assume around 80,000 dollars. one of Robert Macpherson's harnesses went for sale on a live auction for I think starting price 76,000
@k.v.76816 жыл бұрын
In medieval times, a full plate harness could reach the modern equivalent of 3.5M $ if you believe Dr Tobias Capwell, one of the biggest authorities on the subject. So an armour made today would have caused the Knight to scratch the bottom of his purse for coins XD As for today's equivalent, a mid range in Europe, made on order, costs between 15 and 30 000$

Lets joust !!! So few people know the word and doesnt even have any translation / omologue in other languages....Tradutore traditore!!! In real life in middle ages they hit those exact points so not to severely injure your opponent. That showed at the time what chivalrious gentleman they are!
@alexnguyen55636 жыл бұрын
that armour looks good, but it is historically inaccurate unfortunately especially the breastplate.
@rockyblacksmith6 жыл бұрын
What exactly is inaccurate about it?
@durkburk48016 жыл бұрын
it's designed more safely because the point is to entertain not to kill, and some people claim that this armor is based of of tourney armor which is suprisingly different than normal armor. wether these claims are true i do not know.
@rockyblacksmith6 жыл бұрын
nofacesherlock holmes The shield screwed to the left side of the breastplate certainly is drawn from Realgestech armor. And it certainly is true that tourney armour was different from battlefield armor. It's pretty easy to see if you compare them directly (and know a thing or two about armor), but it's also obvious in terms of function; Battlefield armor has to offer an effective tradeoff between protection and agility. To little of either will get you killed. A knight in a joust does not have to be agile (all you need is the ability to control both your horse and your lance properly), but he wants to have maximum protection. So if one were to transfer the comparison into modern warfare, it's like comparing a tank with a fixed gun implacement.
@NihilIslands3 жыл бұрын
Its not historically inaccurate, but accurate where western armies of either German , England French would combat in East Europe or Arabia/Anatolia and get woped in spite of being invincible by lighter cavalry in nefarious weather or land traps....Just to get a clue...
