Its a striking plant! I like the color, and also that it is a grass plant, remaining beautiful without the blooms. Two for one is a win win! Thanks

Thank you, that's a good point. The upright habit helps to create a focal point and break up flat growing ground cover and give a sense of proportion.

Kniphofia - "Torch Lily" is one of the few Perennials that performs really Well in a Desert Climate like Las Vegas NV. It takes the Heat and the Cold of Winter without any special Care. I highly recommend it for anyone who lives in the Desert Southwest. Treat it like an "Aloe Vera" . Little bit of Water and Never 5:52 Ever Water in the Winter Time. Sincerely 🤠 Mr Severance, "The Cake 🍰🎂🥳🎉 Man"& "Xerocsapeing/Master Gardener ".

The first time Americans saw these was in New York City in the African animal diorama displays in the Museum of Natural History.

Thank you for mentioning this. We can only imagine the reaction when these unusual and very imposing perennials were viewed for the first time by botanists and gardeners outside of Madagascar and Africa. Named by a German Professor of Botany (Conrad Moench) in 1794 to honor his friend, Johannes Hieronymus Kniphof it seems that the first plants were probably introduced to countries in Europe before that date, and whether any plants or seeds made it across the Atlantic, remains to be investigated. One thing is for sure and that is that they bring a striking, exotic look to our gardens, and with exciting selections like this, that are free flowering and easy to grow, it makes it a good deal easier to enjoy them in and around our homes. Cultivars have been available in British garden centers for decades. Only recently new colors and nice cultivars are in the US.

Thank you for mentioning this and helping to point out that now "nice cultivars" like this one are available in our partnering garden centers: grownbyoverdevest.com/retail-locator/ Actually selected hybrids and dwarf growing cultivars have been available in British and Irish gardens, all the way back to the turn of the century and perhaps even before that. And, if we look at the bigger, rather coarse growing K. uvaria they go back to before the 1890s when Wilhelm Pfitzer and Max Leichtlin at the Botanical Garden in Baden-Baden, Germany were developing selections of it. We are not sure where Janet would have got her initial hybridizing stock, but it is not beyond the realms of impossibility that this very good one is derived from some of the smaller growing hybrids that the Slingers at the Slieve Donard Nursery, Beth Chatto or Alan Bloom would have introduced. It is exciting, that now home owners (and Hummingbirds) here in our Mid-Atlantic and Northeastern region can enjoy them too.

Can they be grown in Miami?

Miami, is well outside of our experience with it here in our Mid Atlantic and Northeastern region, so we are unable to give you much definitive guidance. However, we know that they are very sun tolerant and that the upper limit of their growing Zones is estimated as Zone 9 so there is a chance that they might be OK. That said, you really ought to check with your local experts and of course, we would defer to their "on the spot" neighborhood expertise. Thanks for watching and contacting us.
