So glad I found this video! I was close to burning all of my knitting supplies...yarn included...out of frustration. This makes knitting so much easier and less stressful. She is right, when she said this style of knitting is practiced in Greece. I remember seeing women knit in this style as a small child. I think also the combination of red and white yarn was often chosen for colour work.

This is a great tutorial with concise, easy instructions, however, I the really low quality video size maxing out at a mere 260px, makes it impossible for me to see the important details of her finger placements, stitches, etc because it’s just too fuzzy/blurry. Perhaps you guys will do another video someday at a higher quality because other than that hindering technical aspect, the actual instruction and such are really superb and top-notch! Thanks!

I found this very useful. I'm an English thrower by tradition and I have tried to learn continental but my hands would not overcome nearly 40 years of repitition. I have tried this method in a small way and my hands will do it, albeit, slowly. My next project will be done using PK and I will hope to improve my speed. On simple projects I can see that it it will probably give me an opportunity to extend my knitting time - as long as there isn't a huge change in gauge :) Thank you for the video which I found very clear even on my mobile phone.

That's awesome. I was reading about South American knitters doing colourwork and purling every stitch with the wrong side facing out, and couldn't work out why anyone would want to do that before watching this video. I'll definitely give it a go myself some time!

I grabbed my circular needles and some yarn and have been working on this for the past 10 minutes. I have it down now but will need practice to get the tension down pat. This is so much easier, especially the purling, thank you.

I searched the internet for the "neck knitting method" - which my mom and my grandmother uses and I couldn't find anything. Now I learnt that this is called "Portuguese technique". Interesting. That's the way I learned to knit, also, but recently I force myself into another method because the "Portuguese" one is thought to be for old ladies.. :) But I will have to think again, I believe that I can knit much faster that way. +Emanuela Jalbă you are right, its for old ladies and NOT elegant and its ugly and you'll get so much Oil and dirt from your Neck on your yarn, or yarn burn or hairs caught in it. I don't know how people come up with such ridiculous ways of knitting. There are so many ways to achieve the proper tension...this is not necessary. , teach yourself contininental or just flick method which is sooooooo fast and dump all this humiliatinating style of knitting that you cannot do anywhere....imagine taking your work on the bus and getting off in a rush and getting the yarn caught on your coat or anywhere else. NO...its no efficient.

+Ella Marie Wow. Negative much? I like to alternate this method with my usual method to knit for longer periods without hand or neck pain. Just use a pin and you won't pick up any skin oils and it's just as fast to flick the yarn off the pin and put your work away as any other knitting method. I got excellent tension with Portuguese knitting as well with very little practice.

Shut up you ignorant, arrogant, self righteous twit! It doesn't matter HOW you knit as long as one is comfortable and can create even stitches. If Portuguese knitting causes less stress to one's hands and minimizes carpel-tunnel discomfort for one who likes to knit, then that's all that matters! There are pins you can wear that the yarn rides through as the woman in the video showed. So, putting the yarn around your neck isn't necessary. As for how many tools you must have in knitting, there are no rules stating you have to use as few tools as possible. There are no knitting police. In knitting one uses 2 needles, yarn (some times several balls at once), stitch markers, gauge cards and the like. So, there's plenty of knitting paraphernalia to have. If using as few tools is your thing, why don't you crochet? Only one hook and one ball of yarn is required for that. Is crochet too vulgar for your taste? Who the hell says you have to knit on the bus. I used to take city buses for years. Guess how many times I saw any one knitting or crocheting on a bus? ZERO times! It's not terribly common! Like many other things in life, there is no absolute one correct way to do something. So get the hell off your high horse about how one is "supposed" to knit.

I was always so bewildered whenever I looked for knitting videos on youtube, because I never understood why people just made it so complicated, and I had never seen anyone knitting like I do, so I was starting to feel like I was the weird one out. ahah But yeah, I have no idea why anyone would do it any other way than this one, it makes the stitches really even and it's easy and comfortable. Or maybe I'm bias because this is how I was taught by my mom.

SpiritBear12 It's called a knitting pin, I'm sure you'll find something if you google it. But it's really nothing special, it's just a little hook where you put the yarn to help keep the tension and still flow easily. If you don't find one, you can always put the yarn around your neck, or make one yourself, it's really not hard. And a safety pin could work, but you'd probably have to take it off every time you pause your work. These are the options I could think of, I hope you find something that works for you. Knitting is really fun, I promise, and this comes from someone who was also crocheting first. :)

A normal hook like the ones used with diapers 30 years ago (at least in Portugal:)) is perfect for knitting this style. I already tried some different ways and this is the one I find easier.

My grandmother taught me to knit in the Portuguese way when I was a child. Then I saw an American knit and I thought it was so complicated and my hands fatigued much faster. I can follow all patterns with less finger movements and the tension is always the same. I hope others learn the Portuguese way, it's much kinder to your fingers and they don't fatigue as much.
