I LOVE it when podcasters talk about actual yarn cost. I find it so helpful.

I am all for hearing about cost for projects, esp. as you noted, in not the smallest sizes. Such a good tip on making the most of a hand dyed yarn budget too. You always choose the best colors and I love hearing about your projects!
@whatsmilimaking3 ай бұрын
Thank you!! I always waffle back and forth on color, but I like to think that time is worth it in the end 😂 Thanks for the feedback re cost of projects. Good to know others are interested in that info too!

I find mentioning the total cost of the project helpful, especially if you have recommendations for more budget friendly alternatives, or places where you can source more expensive yarns on sale. I like your suggestion to use a budget MC and then some more luxury CCs for the tessellated as a way to basically have an all over hand dyed sweater. I'm knitting an Intarsia sweater at the moment using all La Bien Aimée yarn so it's definitely an expensive knit but my money saving hack for LBA is that they usually have a promotion for discounted gift cards before Christmas, and then around Aimée's birthday she has a store-wide sale, so I bought a discounted gift card which I then used during the sale, which saved me a tonne!
@whatsmilimaking3 ай бұрын
That's such a good tip!! Will have to remember that next time they have the sale. I usually wait until they have a free international shipping sale and then purchase, as without the VAT it ends up being cheaper to buy directly from them. I hope you are enjoying your fully LBA knit-- I am sure it will be a beautiful finished object 🥰 and ty for the feedback re including costs!

Any designer should be thrilled to have you do a test knit. Your knitting is perfection. I just finished a pair of socks from Tiny Human Knits. (I finished the first sock and immediately went back and ordered the same colorway for a second pair! LOVE her yarn!) As for including the cost of everything- I REALLY think that is a great feature! You are a delight to watch. Glad I found you!!!!

Awww that is the sweetest compliment, thank you 🥹 Tiny Human Knits makes the cutest self striping yarns!! Her eye for color is stop notch. Hope you enjoy your socks AND your second pair too ☺️

Love to always listen to you talk about colors, maybe because for me picking the right ones is also a critical part of knitting. Your tessellated looks SO good! And I love all the info on yardage and cost options. I say knit the brighter pink mohair for your test knit! Xx

You get me-- I always spend so long contemplating colors before a project 😅 I did end up going with the bright pink!

Hearing the cost in sizes other than the smallest is very helpful, but if sharing it makes you feel bad don’t worry about it! Also, it’s your money and your hobby, so there’s no need to feel guilty (which can be easier said than done). I think I resonate with combining a skein of fancy hand-dyed yarn with more economical yarn in sweater projects. For me, it prevents sticker shock associated with buying multiple $30+ skeins of hand-dyed, but I get to still enjoy the hand-dyed where I use it

So many great projects! Your color choices are always amazing. And I love the idea of sharing the cost of projects! Though I also podcast and I never remember the cost of yarn or use a lot of sample compensation yarn so it’s very hard to evaluate the prices. It could get tricky fast with stash diving and working with dyers to remember the cost of everything! But it is a good idea.
@whatsmilimakingАй бұрын
Yeah for some projects it is harder than others, especially when I am using leftovers. For sample knits or for when the yarn has been gifted, it could be useful to share what the cost would be if you bought the yarn? But also disclose that the actual project was $0 for the yarn. For the most part, I usually remember when and where I bought my yarn so it's not too hard to look up 😅

I actually love the idea of sharing the cost of each project. Not enough people share that. I will start sharing that in my instagram in an effort of being transparent. I do think it would be scary to see how much ive spent per sweater though ahahah 😅
@whatsmilimaking3 ай бұрын
Idk if I want to know how much I spent either 😅I always think of the cost of things when purchasing them, but when I'm picking yarn from stash that I bought months ago, the cost is not at the forefront of my mind. But it looks like the info will be helpful to others and will probably also make me reflect on my yarn choices! Love the idea of doing the same thing on instagram 👍

Hello from a fellow NJ knitter and podcaster!! I think it’s so important to talk about the cost and time of knitting of all the different sizes! I’m currently knitting around the 4-5 range and it’s a much different experience than when I’m knitting 2-3 range. Definitely share the cost! It’s important
@whatsmilimakingАй бұрын
Ty for the feedback! It really shows how quickly the costs add up, even when you only are going up one or two sizes

i think it would be great to share what making your projects costs you. like you said, most ppl who share that info (myself included) knit the smaller sizes, and naturally it will cost a little less. i think it would be great to share the potential cost of a project for someone around you size, because i feel the community isnt so inclusive anyway (until recently, maybe) in terms of sizes, so it would be nice to have more inclusivity on any and all fronts. And also including the original vs sale price of the yarn is a nice detail, so if anyone is interested in the yarn but dont have a store with an ongoing sale locally, they'll have a better idea of what it might cost them. Lovely projects btw! Thanks for sharing:)
@whatsmilimaking3 ай бұрын
You're so right! I didn't even think of it in terms of inclusivity, but sharing the price transparency hopefully helps with that ☺I will def include any sale prices as I love finding things on sale 😂 And hope others can get a good deal too!

Your framed sweater looks incredible! Im a large-xl in most patterns and Ive always been to nervous to knit mowry patterns cause they just dont seem flattering on larger frames and your lengthening the yokes might be what I am seeing. I cant wait to see all of them at rhinebeck this year, even if i dont have one 😂
@whatsmilimaking3 ай бұрын
I totally feel that! I don't enjoy sweaters that are tight in the under arms but I also don't enjoy sweaters where the under arm is several inches lower than my actual arm (as I am short with a short torso). Basically, I want the golidlocks of yoke lengths 😂 So far, it seems that knitting a size with less ease than recommended, and then extending the yoke length has given me my desired fit 🤞

I’m not interested in hearing about the costs. I’m not in the US so it doesn’t have any meaning for me. I am more interested in your experiences knitting the patterns, using the yarn. It will probably interest those in the same country so maybe just putting that info in the show notes?
