Our best trip was taking our daughter to all the museums and a broadway show in the early 2000’s. She is very artsy and now lives in San Francisco and is a designer for a company in the Bay Area. We attribute a lot of her success to our many trips to New York.

While I have driven through NYC many times to visit my small coastal Maine hometown over the years, I have only visited one time. It was a somber & bittersweet visit in Sept 2001. As an active duty soldier, I was part of the team sent ahead to prepare for the Presidential visit shortly after 9/11. It was definitely a dark time for our country but I also have fond memories of the little things that brought joy in those difficult days. The talented artists at the historic Waldorf Astoria made magnificent floral arrangements and brought beauty to the city. The food vendors on the streets provided delicious nourishment to the city. The residents of NYC and visitors from across the country brought hope and inspiration for the future and made me proud to be serving my country. I would love to return to NYC for a true vacation to enjoy the yarn shops, bakeries & pizza joints & the theater/ballet performances that the city has to offer! Thanks, Natalie & Kent for this glimpse of this wonderful city. I’m looking forward to seeing the country with you. 😊

Hilda here. I have never been to NYC but if I was ever to go I would want to visit Ellis Island. That's where my father landed when he and 2 of his sisters immigrated to this country in the early 1920s. I think it would give me a strong sense of connection since he passed away when I was a small child. Thanks to Knitty City for their generosity.

My fav visit to NY was the Easter after 9/11 when my family met me there for a week together. I was living in Europe at the time, and feeling nostalgic for my US home and the NYC love. We saw the sites, visited a very devastated ground zero, saw Aida, and ate & ate all the things. Love to you Natalie - thx for this great KnittyCity tour!

I am in the UK. My husband and I visited New York in 2005. We wanted to see ‘Wicked’ on Broadway because it hadn’t opened in London yet. We planned to watch it on the Monday evening but didn’t realise the shows were closed on Mondays and we were flying back on Tuesday afternoon. 😢 However, the rest of our visit was amazing! We did all the things like going up the Empire State Building, taking a horse and carriage ride thru Central Park, doing the NBC tour, going to FAO Schwartz toy store, visiting Times Square and taking the Staten Island ferry to see the Statue of Liberty. We will definitely visit again in a heartbeat but will have to wait till I’ve had, and recovered from, my double hip replacement!! 🎉 Thanks to Knitty City and you, Knitty Natty, for this amazing giveaway. ❤

One of my best days in NYC was when the Met museum reopened after the Covid lockdown. I spent five hours cherishing what I had missed for all the time they were closed. Every November on marathon day is another fabulous time to be in NYC. It is when people from the whole world come together and the streets become one gigantic 26.2miles of cheering and positive energy! And the Bryant Park knit along in public day in June! ❤️ 🧶!

Our best time in NYC was when our son was 9 or 10 years old and he was completely obsessed with Home Alone and all of the New York landmarks. So for his dream vacation, we came to NY and first went to see ‘Live with Regis and Kathie Lee’ then walked him all over the city. FAO Schwartz, Park Plaza, 30 Rock, Empire State Building, etc. He LOVED it! One other time, the company I work for (in Rhode Island) was to ring the Nasdaq opening bell. I had only been with the company about three months at the time. The company chartered a huge bus and 50 of us (we have about 600 employees) left Westerly RI, at 4am and did the Nasdaq thing. The photo of us ringing the bell was on the cover of our Annual Report that year. BTW, I knit the whole trip down and back. Then a group of us went over to the World Trade Center and took it all in, had a lovely lunch ar a wonderful Italian restaurant nearby and ended the day with me knitting in Bryant Park. Absolutely fantastic day - long (we got back to RI around 7:30 pm), but absolutely unforgettable! ❤

My family went to NY on New Years Eve day in the early 2000’s. It was the craziest experience ever! We were in a mini-van. The parking areas did not allow mini-vans. So we double parked & took turns going to the restroom. That was a chore as stores wanted you to purchase before using their restroom. We finally found a hospital in the middle of a block & used theirs. We were amazed to see the taxis with push bars on front & on back. We watched a taxi driver spray paint a dent right there on the street. The traffic was crazy. I doubt I ever get back to NY as my husband hated the experience. Thank you Natalie for showing me so much good in NY!!

My sister and I visited NYC many years ago. We went to Ellis Island and looked up our grandmother as she came through Ellis Island in 1908 from Sweden. Getting her manifest provided us with the town where she was raised and we were able to visit her hometown and the house she where she grew up in Hjo, Sweden. The owners were very gracious and let us see the inside of the house. My sister and I also visited the 911 memorial, which was very sobering. We ate at Tavern on the Green before they closed, which was amazing. I love your podcasts and look forward to seeing what states you visit in your next chapter of van life.

I grew up outside of NYC (about an hour out) and was so blessed to be able to visit Broadway, the NY Philharmonic, the opera, the ballet and the museums as a kid. I have been living away from all of that culture for over 20 years and have kids of my own now. I want to come back to be able to give them the gift of a genuinely first rate cultural experience. And being able to visit all of the small businesses (yarn stores, cafe and restaurants and random, incredibly unique places that couldn't survive elsewhere) is a lovely part of that cultural draw, along with the bigger and bolder experiences.

My only memory of going to NY City was when I was a very young child. My aunt owned a restaurant there. Above the restaurant was rooms she rented out and that's where we slept. I remember there was a big neon sign just outside our window that lit up the room at night with pretty colors and I loved that. We felt like we had the run of the place. We were allowed to go into the kitchen anytime we wanted to use the milk machine. It was ice cold and probably the best milk we ever drank. Being outside kids, as all kids were back in the day, we liked to play on the sidewalk outside. We were in awe of all the people, cars, and the noise... I remember going home with lots of red hot dogs. Mom loved them and we couldn't get them where we lived.

On 9/11 my father was the first federal agent on scene at the plane that crashed in Shanksville, PA only about 20 minutes from our house. In 2002 on our way back from vacation he decided we should go to NYC to visit ground zero. It was still mainly just rubble, but still very touching to see. He was able to talk with the FDNY firefighters across the street and have a moment with others who understood the full heaviness of that awful day. We rode the ferry that goes around the Statue of Liberty, participating in a moment of silence going by ground zero. And we’re able to do lots of other fun NYC things…bagels, Empire State Building, subway, Grand Central Station, etc. ❤️ I need to go back as an adult with my children now.

My only time in NYC was last month when I took my son to check out Seton Hall. We had 1 afternoon in NYC. We took the train in from NJ, stopped at Penn Station and Grand Central. We checked out the Chrysler and Flat Iron buildings. Then headed to Knitty City though got on the wrong subway initially. After Kitty City we got cookies at Levain's then wandered Central Park. We spent an hour watching a guy put people into giant bubbles. Then we went to FAO Schwartz, out to dinner at an Irish Pub, and finally to Book of Mormon. It was a great mom/son day and he was already picking out bulky yarn to get me to make him a blanket for when he moves to NJ from FL.😊

I have so many incredible memories of NYC. I think my favorite took place when I worked on 5th Avenue. A close friend worked around the corner near Grand Central Terminal. One Christmas, we explored the various lobbies of buildings around that area at lunch, enjoying their various decorations. Some had carolers, one even had a puppet show. It was so memorable.

One of my favorite NYC experiences was when my boyfriend took me to see Book of Mormon! It was a total surprise right up until we walked up to the theater and we had a fantastic day. We took the train from Poughkeepsie, did a little shopping, had an amazing dinner, and then got to see my favorite musical 🎉

I've been to NYC once, ages ago. We were visiting family in Quebec and decided to leave our kids there and drive to NYC and then Atlantic City. My husband had an elaborate plan to avoid traffic driving in and it seemed to work. That and an off Broadway show are all that I recall! I wish you all the best for your year of adventure!

I've been to NYC 5 times. Every time was amazing and since its been 8 or so years I think its time to go back. The shows, the food , the sights it is all great. My favourite memory was taking our two teenagers to see Billy Joel at MSQ. An unforgettable time, that my kids still talk about. When I go next I will defiantly check out Knitty City.

Such a generous prize donation! It's been over 20 years since I've been to NYC, but my favorite thing about the city was seeing shows on Broadway! I would love to come back for a visit and see Knitty City in person!
