if I understood the game lore correctly, this is what happened: Strange felt that the universe was about to break and tried to do a spell to stop it. He fucked the spell up and got the Sanctum Sanctorum and himself trapped in the Astral plane. He frees himself occasionally to join the fight untill he's forced to return to the Astral plane. Every Hero in Rivals has a lore tap - there it is explained how they came to be! (I mean the long backstory not the short summary)
