Actually him playing the piano key was the signal for the other detective to get back on track and ask what time each of them made it to the party. You can rewatch the scenes it’s an interesting little thing

Even though Benoit was claimed to be only a consultant and a private investigator cooperating with the police in the case, scenes like this made me believe that he was the main detective in charge of the investigation and that Trooper Wagner and Lieutenant Elliot were his assistants 😂 The former even calls him "Benny" like if they were longtime working partners.
