Been watching all of your Dark Souls 1 challenges since finishing my first blind playthrough last week, about halfway through DS2 now and when I finish that I am excited to start watching the DS2 challenge runs lol!

The thing that bugs me about low-chance random drops is that Final Fantasy *Twelve* had that shit sorted. I loved the way chaining mobs upped your drop rate in that; it was very nicely balanced so that someone just going through the game normally will occasionally get a really nice surprising RNG, and those of us who are stupid determined to get rares can chain Helvinek. (Which I honestly do not recommend.)

One enemy required you to kill 100 other specific enemies, and had something like 5% chance of rewarding a katana that wasn't even good. I will always love FFXII

Except that chaining certain rare enemies with rare drops in XII involves having to zone out before their death animation finishes, which probably wasn’t intentional. 😂 Still the game was way ahead of itself and handled nicely a ton of issues that games still seem to have today.

@@mirko241 Was that Larva Eater or the rare Bomb in the Lhusu Mines that dropped that? They were both absurdly obnoxious, but Larva Eater was worse, as I recall. I did try chaining the Bomb once, but it was just truly tedious so I stopped. I read the *directions* for chaining Larva Eater and was like nope, nuh-uh, not happening. I even respect those being like that, since there's only a few that are that difficult, and they're anything but essential gear. Though I would not ever do a challenge run requiring, say, the Grand Helm. (Rare in the Pharos, but you can build up a same-type chain and use the Strahl-doesn't-break-chains exploit, I remember this without looking because farming really does drive you mad.)

@@indubitablewordsmith9138 True! The Cerberus & Tartarus enemies would have been a better example. Made the Tournesol grind much less painful. Though on my second playthrough, I realized it was still nonetheless unnecessarily painful because every guide claimed you could keep killing both and it wouldn't reset rarity rates. Untrue. It doesn't reset multiple-drop rate, but it messes with rarity. That means it's good to use both types until you get to like maybe a fifteen or twenty chain, then switch to just the type that dropped the Hell-Gate's Flame and it drops waaay faster than doing it with both, saved me so much time in the future. Why do I remember all this, what good is it still doing me? Anyway, I loved that game, which I think shows.

Big weapons in this game are weird. I had such a hard time with Smough cause my scythe kept hitting his hammer and doing no damage to him. It was honestly bizzare. You have the patience of a saint for this though, I would have given up rather quickly.

Around 12:00, afaik, the Bed of Chaos is the Witch of Izalith who tried to recreate the First Flame. Her children were near her when she failed and the catastrophe turned them into the Bed of Chaos, Quelaag, the Fair Lady, and Ceaseless Discharge. The random sorceress outside the Bed of Chaos' arena is presumably another of her children who either went mad or is trying to protect what's left of her mother. The only child who survived it and remained sane is the one who sells you spells at the bottom of Blighttown. Interestingly, in DS3 you can find an area where two spider women are hugging each other in some rubble, presumably Quelaag and her sister.
