Hi going through something similar- turned out my exhaust valve rocker was off the spring! after it ran fine, however when i put 26lb valve springs I didn’t put a OEM/“correct” valve keeper on the intake valve… it popped out. i had a clinking sound for 1 turn over before i started ripping my head apart. there was my intake valve( bent ~80° off) in my cylinder chamber. it did not scratch the cylinder walls but still have to replace the valves, keeper, and spark plug. be warned of your own work and check what you’ve modified over once in a while…

Sounds like ur valves. Check valve lash and adjust em to either .003 each or .004in and .006ex

I usually like to drill another oil hole on those rods and sand and polish off the casting flaws on the oil dipper and on the whole rod

Did you have advance your timing? I have the same issue with my motor and that's what I deducted it to be. The advanced flywheel key I put in

Can you tell me what size bolts are needed to plug the holes in the engine after removing the Governor? Im not the best at identifying thread pitches and such. thanks!

I just grabbed whatever fits, if you have a tap, you could also just tap the hole and put whatever bolt matches the tap. Honestly that is not even necessary. The aluminum is easy to just screw a bolt into if its just a hair bigger then the hole.

honestly i just find a bolt that fits with little to no wiggle room, then JB weld it into place, its worked for me for a long time on my predator knock off engine, 4 years; no governor, the bolt is still held nicely in place by the JB weld.

Does that little gear on the end of the crank shaft affect the engine or is it safe to run with that off

sounds like you are describing is the governor drive gear, if your governor is deleted, then the drive gear is not needed and can be safely removed from the crank shaft.

Watching you handling that piston hurt me...and its crucial you use a torque wrench on a piston so you dont overtighten and further damage your rod...i know this video is old but just something to keep in mind now...
