Knocked loose is on he modern example of just pure uncompromising hardcore rage. They have better songwriting than just riff salad beatdown bands, and actually have hooks and catchy aspects. Mean ass breakdowns for aged deathcore fans, the creepy korn guitar stuff for the former nu-metal kids. And also, Brian Garris’ voice is way more listenable since it’s more “real” sounding than just the normal beatdown fat guy vocals. For some reason, they are popular too and they achieved a pretty good score on billboard and stuff. Go knocked loose.

Bryan Garris is a really weird case. His screaming pitch is a lot higher than his natural speaking voice. Like a lot of vocalists from the modern hardcore scene he doesn't really care about technique. He said he just does what feels natural but never learned to scream. He's pretty safe and comfortable in what he does, his voice has gotten a lot better since KL started

@@ooddododd8101 it's possible but I doubt it. I've seen KL a couple of times and watched a lot of live videos and his voice never sounds strained. You'll be surprised by what you hear. And btw, about your concern with his vocals. Bryan is a Straight Edge. For those who don’t know, it’s not drinking alcohol, not smoking, and not taking drugs. Clean mind and body. So I can safe to say that he's alright. I watch majority of his interview he's pretty cool guy.

I’m curious if this false cord-informed gritty belting technique is the same thing as what a lot of people call “power fry” It sounds similar to the staple metalcore/post-hardcore Mids that vocalists like Mike Hranica, Caleb Shomo, Jon Mess, and Brendan Murphy do. Are these two different approaches to a similar sound or the same style with different pitch placements/natural voices?

My man, this isn’t even the heaviest song in their repertoire! However, it’s essentially splitting hairs, because all their songs emanate hostility, pain, power, just sheer ferocity. Here are some recommendations per their last few albums though, if I may. “Oblivion’s Peak” from the album “Laugh Tracks” “Forget Your Name” from the album “A Different Shade of Blue” (features Keith Buckley) “God Knows” from their new EP “A Tear in the Fabric of Life” Again, all of their stuff slaps, but if you wanna avoid upholstering your chair and just finish it completely, these 3 tracks will get you there lol.

Oh my God, I absolutely LOVED this reaction. I love Knocked Loose, and Bryan's vocals are just so unique. Glad you gave the boys in KL some much needed love (always love seeing you bring the sword out lmao). I actually have a recommendation for you. I would love it if you checked out Shawn Plummer's (prev. The Screamo Negro) dual vocal cover of Crooked by Dead Vectors. He does it with a friend of his named Braeden Cononie and their vocals are INSANE. Shawn was actually one of the reasons I started screaming, so seeing you react to his vocals would be an absolute DREAM. Keep up the good work y'all, you guys are awesome! 🤘🤘🤘

My theory is that he is doing a sort of falsetto belt with enough airflow that it causes the surrounding tissue to vibrate (think "shout" scream, but with a falsetto voice). That's at least what makes sense when you consider that his speaking voice is much deeper than his screams, and in a really early KL record, he had a scream that sounded more like his normal speaking voice.

It's crazy, I watch so many daily new live Knocked Loose videos and Bryan literally doesn't sound any different live. Man does it every night and doesn't miss a beat. One of my favourite bands to see live - I saw them in Toronto and it was BRUTAL in the best way.

Knocked loose has done a fantastic job growing with their sound. From their split to their newest ep, they’ve gotten heavier, explored, and Bryan has gone more raw in his vocals. Their slings and arrows cover, ADSOB, and their newest EP, Bryan explores a lot with his vocals. I’ve seen them three times now, and each show keeps getting better. Their sound is spectacular live. From start to finish, they keep their energy. And to imagine they do this every night is astounding. I bought ADSOB on their Album release mini tour in 2019 and haven’t taken it out of my car since.

I was kind of curious about his vocal pitch as well and then I saw a live performance and he comes out trying to pump up the crowd with that same high pitch voice. It was so unexpected and goofy. I asked myself "Can't believe this is the voice of a guy that's about to make me wanna punch someone in the teeth."

Mark, there’s an interview with Bryan on the Lead Singer Syndrome podcast you may find interesting. It was a few years ago but I remember him saying that his vocal approach was just to go out and yell as hard as he can. I’d be curious to see if/how that’s changed since then. Sounded great live last month. VERY loud compared to other vocalists on that tour.
