Love this update. I have to move a kitchen and bath off of porches over unheated crawl spaces in one of my houses so that they don't freeze up in the winter (WI). Didn't think of looking at You Tube videos to find out how. Thanks for the idea, Mike! I might be able to do a large part of it myself. As a kid growing up on a farm where every day was hours and hours of work (carried wood into the house 45 minutes a day, acres of garden to plant and weed, thistles to chop, 140 acres of barbed wire fence to maintain, beekeeping, making hay, roof fixing, feeding and milking 2x a day, animals to care for), looking back, those are what made me the successful business owner, and the valued and much-promoted employee as an adult. I don't regret having to work so much; and, those are my good memories, working with my Dad and sisters. Your kids will benefit greatly from the work you are having them do along side of you. (Pay the Littles a nickel a nail. The boards will get cleaned up along with any they find in the yard, sidewalk, etc.) My dad did something like that and it was a blast!

They say moving house is one of the most stressful things to do. But you have downsized, with 9 kids into a construction site! I'm surprised you've managed to film as much as you have!! I can see amongst the stress you are both loving learning new skills and the sense of achievement you get from doing things yourselves xxx

Once you build a wall for the fridge, you should consider adding a small closet behind the fridge for like board games, extra blankets, toys etc. The closet could be behind the fridge and before that bedroom door with enough standing room or swing room for the door so you aren't standing in the door entrance when you open the closet. Good job on everything. It is fun to watch.

I was given a tip recently on how to keep a house easy and efficient and that is to look at your home as if you are renting it out as a summer rental to strangers. Every drawer and cupboard in the large living spaces are picked thru, etc. It’s amazing how much stuff we have that we don’t use often or ever, that could get donated or thrown out or stored away. You guys I’m sure are the masters of space at this point and I envy that.

Your comfort with uncertainty and change is really inspiring. I think the fact you're showing your kids how feel secure amidst change will serve them well in life. I really like the new layout, can't wait to see the reveal! It's funny, my absolute favorite thing you've done so far (aside from opening up walls) is modifying hutches for the kitchen.

I realised that it is probably too late, but having the powerpoint (electrical outlet) higher so that you can turn off the fridge/freezer without having to pull it out could be helpful. Also if you have to plumb in the fridge for automatic drinking water, if you have a shutoff valve also within reach so that if there is a leak you can turn it off without pulling out the fridge. Greetings from Australia. 👍

When we got our kitchen remodelled I had the powerpoint moved up and also had the water cutoff valve moved higher. We have cupboards above our fridge and I got the carpenter to cut a circle out of the corner of the back of one cupboard so I can just reach my hand through the hole and turn off the water. The carpenter thought it was a very good idea!

I love this series! It's great to show your kids that you can always learn new skills no matter how old you are! My parents were like you, always learning how to fix things around the house rather than hiring someone, and I appreciate that example now that I'm an adult. It helps me see that I can troubleshoot and problem solve when I encounter a problem, not just things that need to be fixed at home, but also other challenging situations that require creative thinking! Great example Mike and Meghan! I can't wait to buy my first house and do these fun diy projects to make my home what I want but until then, I will live vicariously through you.

Ok you have totally redeemed yourselves! For a certain amount of time things seemed very fake and positioned (not that it was intentional, maybe that you spent more time on edits?) but just seeing the mess, chaos, reality and the joy over a tool that nails in tight places (I am a remodel/renovated/tile setter who is an absolute tool junkie) so I love it!!!!😍🥰
