It's got to be comedy. When he said that "they never never learned to wield an ax and had to move because there was too much shade to grow crops", I nearly fell out of my chair laughing. This is his attempt at comedy. He is a smart guy who's just making this stuff up for grins . Even if they were unable to use an ax (NOT), they were a coastal city with a significant trade business. At a minimum, they had fish and farm animals and could import whatever they needed. They were obviously a brilliant people.

Knossos was entirely rebuilt by Evans in the beggining of the 20th century! So how can he tell us the columns are totally originals? They are made with modern concrete!
