Amen! Thank you for pointing this out. Too many people are running around complaining that their $400 custom Bushcraft knife doesn’t clean fish the way they think it should because they haven’t considered what the design is actually intended for vs what they want it to do.

You are spot on that people thing the feather stick is a badge of honor. The same with the bow drill or the fero rod. It's good to be interested and become proficient but it does not make you the best. As to a knife, it is much like a firearm or really any tool you have to use it constantly for all kinds of tasks to make it work for you. A good all around knife is just that all around, not perfect for every task. You should get a knife that works good for what you mostly use a knife for not what someone else uses one for. Doesn't mean you cant carry one just because you like it and has a cool factor. At times even against what Nessmuck and Kephart said, I will carry a bowie knife because it is downright cool. It subs well for the hatchet. I carry a machette, a kuhkri, heay belt camp knife or a lueku as I desire. I carry a smaller all around knife at the same time.

THANK YOU! I have been telling my buddies for years when they ask me , GEE WHAT KNIFE SHOULD I GET, pick a knife that appeals to you AND then use it in the kitchen, hiking etc, but use it ALL THE TIME, if it does not work for you, ok, choose another. BUT, Money does not buy you YOUR KNIFE, think can you use it comfortably and efficiently. Folders included.

I don't recall if I ever commented on this point. After every use of a knife of 5 inches or less I actually strop it in the palm to maintain the edge, seems to work. I find doing the "tim the toolman' grunt seems to enhance the stroke, lol. Not mandatory but would startle camp buddies,LOL
