A friend and I both got new bikes in July of last year. Me an MT-09, he a Duke 790. In the just over a year since then I've been to the shop 0 times for warranty related service. He's been back twice, with a third looming as his 790 started misfiring a few days ago. The Duke is cool af, but I think I'll stick with the Yam on the reliability front alone.

Everything come down to how you ride them , my friend& i owns duke 390 and had his engine rebuild within 10000kms where mine duke 390 is over 25k kms and still runs like brand new never had issue , it could be that some may get little bit of defects from factory but its just i guess bad luck , ktm does tune their bike so aggressive like we are in motogp i think ktm have to tune duke a little less aggressive so the reliability gets better ,

I did all the homework in the world before buying a street naked, and found the MT-09 to be the best of all worlds. Finally bought one, rode it for a year, and found all my research was indeed spot on. With my evil black 2020 "Batcycle", I don't even look at other bikes. And the way this thing feels is both big lovable teddy bear/complete frickin' insanity - it is whatever you want it to be and everything in between other than dirt, with Yamaha's "never ever ever leave you stranded" dependability/durability. Right before I bought mine, I was at the dealership and a guy who traded his MT-09 in on a Harley only 3 months earlier was back in the store trading the new Harley back in on a new bike. A different bike you may wonder, especially since this was a prime chance for an upgrade and the guy could easily afford any bike on the floor? Nope - he went right back to another brand new MT-09. I've never seen that before, and it confirmed all of my homework. Between the '09 and the Duke, we're splitting hairs in most cases, but I found the '09 to be far more versatile to fit different riding moods and modes with that amazing engine and electronics package. On top of that, I've got too much experience with hard lessons - I'll cross barren deserts on anything from Yamaha, but not on anything else, especially from Europe. Other than maybe Honda, Yamaha's the only brand I'd ever trust my life to as far as any mandatory zero-breakdown requirement. Reliability overwhelmingly trumps any minor performance differences, hands down.

KTM = Ready To Race and just as Ready To Repair. I own an MT09SP 2021 after having a 790duke, I did ride the 890R and loved it but you can’t beat Yamaha for reliability and is so easy to live with. The two recent KTM bikes I’ve have owned suffered from oil and coolant leak’s within weeks of coming out the showroom, that and electrical issues have made me not want to own one again.

Have a duke 790 for a year now, and I must say it does give you an unique riding experience. It is so composed on the road it feels almost unnatural. And I do agree with what was said, you find your own limits when pushing felling it is just at mid range of where it could go. Just amazing. No issues so far, knock on wood😄

One thing I noticed sitting on both of the bikes: The Yamaha was more comfortable if you just sit in one spot while you’re riding. If you move around a lot when cornering, this is much easier to do on the KTM- Your knees have more freedom, and the flat seat allows you to throw your body from left to right very easily. You feel perfectly positioned to lean. I wanted the comfort and reliability of the Yamaha but the sharpness of the KTM won me over.

I agree moving around on my MT09SP is a little awkward. I’m hoping that two mods fix it. I’m going to get some woodcraft clip ons and a new seat. We’ll see. Other than this, I LOVE the bike. Even while stock, the engine sound is incredible (for you). And then with an exhaust, the sound is incredible (for everyone else too).

It came down to these two bikes for me. I chose the MT-09 for two reasons. First, the ergonomics of the MT-09 work better for my body. Second, the closest KTM dealer, which is an hour away, could not figure out how to enable a test ride for this bike. They said they had to do some electronic unlock for the test ride. After 45 minutes of waiting for them to figure this out, I gave up and left. I was concerned that if the dealer could not figure this out, they will have difficulty if any other electronic issue arises. So the scale was tipped in the MT-09's favor because of reliability concerns.
@HeyAddieImTojo
@HeyAddieImTojo Жыл бұрын
Yeah. They have to unlock the ecu remotely in the ktm database to even be able to start it. Same with husqvarna. So easy fix for a dealer is to just have an unlocked demo bike. It is a theft deterrent. Thieves could steal, say, 15 bikes, but they would be useless since they are not unlocked electronically yet.

I've ridden both and my money would go with the MT09-SP because of reliability and it has more tech features like 6 axis IMU and Cruise control etc. And I'm not nearly a good enough rider to push those bikes hard enough to ever appreciate the race type suspension on the Duke 890-R. I don't think I could push either bike to their limits but I damn sure would use a Cruise control and appreciate the saifty features like the 6 axis IMU on the MT-09. Then to top it off there is just a massive aftermarket that supports the MT09 because it's so popular. The Duke probably has a considerably smaller aftermarket Anderson not pretend like KTM is anywhere near as reliable as Yamaha. Almost anywhere you take a bike they will be familiar with Yamaha especially the MT09 so it's probably easier to tune if you upgrade air filter and exhaust.
@ulaskvlcm
@ulaskvlcm 2 жыл бұрын
Six axis IMU is a standart feature on 890 Duke R as well. Also it has Brembo brakes which MT 09 SP lacks and WP suspensions. Cruise Control is an optional but not so important for me, because these are naked bikes for fun riding and daily commuting! Not sports tourer. KTM is a more light, agile, and powerful. Reliabilty issue is a different aspect and you are right. All Japanese brands are more reliable than Europeans.

Great review! These two bikes really do represent some of the most fun that can be had on two wheels today, they epitomise that sweet spot in motorcycling where power meets light weight and agility. Thank You! I've narrowed my next bike to one of these two with an open mind to the Street Triple RS as well. But these 2 have a lead of the Street Triple. I ride around town including to work. I want to do some track days. And some daily and weekend overnight rides. Luckily I'm medium sized and athletic. (5' 10" 170 lbs.) so weird to say; I seem to adapt to different riding positions easily. An air hawk type cover for long ride days takes care of any seat comfort issues for me. As far as dealership support...I'm spoiled! I can literally walk to a Triumph dealership and at least 3 each of KTM and Yamaha within 25 miles! (Ft. Worth, Texas) And to add to it: I do my own maintenance and custom work. But having said that....all three bikes are lacking in maintenance videos here on KZbin. One big goal I want to fulfill is just improving my riding skills. My cornering, wheelies, and learn to do stopees. I can do all three, but am lacking in confidence. Never owned a sport or naked bike. Just Cruisers and ADV bikes. Currently own Yamaha Super Tenere, KTM 1190 Adventure R, Triumph Speedmaster and KLR 650. The big takeaway for me on this video was the difference in turning radius! That said a lot to me. I've been watching soooo many comparison videos here and this was the first to show a turning radius comparison. But all-in-all another issue is stock....dealerships are having a heck of a time getting either bike in stock and here we are well past any Covid issues yet business and industry is still complaining about supply....I'm leaning heavily towards the 890 Duke R....but it might just boil down to which bike I can find available!!!

Coming from an XSR900 (MT09) to a 2022 Duke 890R, I must say this is spot on. You can’t go wrong with either bike and it’s a great time to be alive in motorcycling. I must say the fun factor of the KTM is a little higher than the Yamaha, but the Yamaha engine is better. I hope for reliability in my KTM, but overall you cannot go wrong with either bike. The KTM feels more premium. The Yamaha feels slightly faster because you can run the gears longer (redline).

Would be interesting... Ive ridden with both on fast group track days, the GSXR 750 is slightly faster, but of course handles like a proper sports bike. In gear performance though would be had by the naked as they have a lot more grunt. Thanks, Aaron KNOX

If you could only have one, it'd have to be the MT 09. On real roads, both really do the job, but easier to spend more time on and with...easily more reliable. And it sounds great! Those are the things that ultimately matter if you put hours on your bike. But, yeah. Both are incredible. Golden age.

@@thejudge3040 It was the low end torque that made me realize the KTM was different, then I leaned it over. I like a triple engine over twins or 4’s, until this one. KTM nailed it with this parallel twin. The torque is delivered so soon, producing more at 4k than the Triumph at any range.

The Yamaha is a great motorcycle, the refinement of its engine and its sound are the best, the driving position leaves the front end very loose and nervous for sporty driving. The character, the lightness, the supermotard stance and the stability that the KTM transmits are hard to beat, the 890 Duke feels like it has the agility of a small 250 but with the torque and power of a 1000cc, I love that bike, it brings the best of each world. Side by side, the Duke is also much prettier for my taste. So for me KTM, the "all black" version is my favorite.
