"Primate climb up a spine and attach" is just another way of saying the common phrase "monkey on his back." This is one of my favorite bars in the song because "something something monkey on his back" fits into the rhyme scheme and I feel that was what he originally wrote, but then being Aes he decided that wasn't weird/obscure enough so he changed it lol

i agree, aes is master class and people either think "oh, ive never heard him before so forget it." or "i dont care for asap rocky" without giving it a chance. but also people cant wrap their domes over his style and give up trying to understand it. when even just listening to his cadence and schemes is plenty for the "lazy listener." the complexity of his flow is on par with his writing. he definitely needs more attention then he gets.

Beautiful breakdown of one, if not ,the most artistic lyricist of our day. Loved your take on it. Great work !! Not many would even risk dissecting this masterpiece. Huge props.

Aesop Rock is actually so underrated. He has the most unique words in his first 35000 lyrics out of a whole load of rappers, probably all rappers. For those wondering he was rapping when Asap Rocky was like 3 years old so didn't copy his name lol

Damn Knox! This video could be a thesis: Aesop Rock’s Metaphorical Approach to Social Commentary

His beats and flow are among the best as far as I'm concerned. The lyricism is not even in question. That said, I understand that the casual listener might have trouble connecting with Aesop's metaphorical approach to his lyrics. It's a struggle for me, it doesn't come to me naturally like it does to Knox. But I appreciate the depth of what he has to say when I spend the time to dig into the interpretation of those lyrics. But I'd argue just the flow and beat of his music alone just sounds NICE, even if you don't want to dive into the deeper meanings. I vibe to Aesop all the time in my playlists. Love Aesop and he's hugely slept on. Also, when I see folks talk about a rap artists cadence and flows and sound being good. Comparisons to Aesop is often my measuring stick, and honestly, most come up short for me. It's its not even to say those other artists are trash. But there's levels to this, and for flow and lyrical rap that's not talking about typical rap culture themes, Aesop is one of the best. Also I can admit my upbringing, being a middle-aged white guy from the prairies of Canada, I can understand the message and the reflection of lived live experiences in rap and I appreciate it even if I can't truly connect with it. Aesop's themes are more universal I'd argue, so that might be why the hit deeper for me.

been listening to aesop rock forever now and hearing you catch things I haven't even understood is kinda nuts. Pretty sure he's gone on record as saying his shit is pretty surface level which makes me feel like an idiot tbh lol. Pretty sure he was being sarcastic but if he wasn't, dude sees in 4 dimensions i guess.

Aesop Rock will blow your mind. His old stuff is so layered and dense, but as he's aged i feel like he's refined his art so well. Check out Jazz Hands from Garbology (2021), which is still as metaphoric and abstract, but feels like a far more polished track than his mid-90s released. There's a bunch of common themes throughout each of his albums, too. Anti-capitalism, anti-authoritarianism and of course his cat Kirby.
