It is amazing the ones hating on Tom, as though he is dissing Em. Seems to me they should be more aware of Em's lyrics...and would have caught that the "nanana" part as being familiar and realized Em has used that in songs. It isnt thumbing his nose at Em. Similarly, the last line in first verse "...AND THERE'S A MILLION OF US JUST LIKE ME WHO CUSS LIKE ME WHO JUST DONT GIVE A FUCK LIKE ME WHO DRESS LIKE ME, WALK, TALK AND ACT LIKE ME." When I ended up hospitalized with pneumonia, it initially manifested as a lingering cough after I was sick. I didn't feel anything else for a while but I kept coughing for months. To me it sounds like Tom is paying homage and that he is a Stan, but at the same time saying that I'm an artist in my own right and I've picked up the mantle you dropped. Which mantle is it that 'Em dropped? I'd say it is the counter culture mantle that 'Em has not dropped, but lost. Not consciously, but rather as a consequence of the change of culture in society. You might, correctly, say that 'Em hasn't changed in his views, but he is no longer counter culture, as the definitions of culture and counter culture has flipped. The counter culture twenty years ago is now the established culture and counter culture is by definition counter the culture. That is what happens when you''re getting older, become establshed and stick to your beliefs not to the times. Tom is a critic of current culture and is now "the one counter culture follows". Tom had the same critique of MacLethal in "Mac Lethal Sucks" when he says "Dave, counter-culture is who beats you up". So, Tom has picked up the lost mantle of counter culture rappers like 'Em and is telling him straight up that he is no longer counter culture, but at the same time thanking him for being the role model for counter culture rappers. Tom is not saying he is a better rapper than 'Em, he is saying he is the face of counter culture that 'Em used to be. "The Times They Are a-Changing" as Dylan put it...

Not to say that Knox isn’t smart, because he definitely is, but it’s more of a matter of familiarity with rap along with a vast technical knowledge of the subject, plus the fact that he lives and breathes rap, that allows him to come up with rhymes like that. I just want to make very clear that I’m not trying to knock Knox in any way, but his abilities are the fruits of his hard work and dedication, not just the result of his intrinsic intelligence. I really hate the propagated notion that people who possess great skill in a particular field (I mean any field, not just rapping or music in general, etc.) have somehow been blessed with a talent that is unachievable if you’re not “born with it”. Without exception, those that have truly honed in their craft have all put in COUNTLESS hours to make it where they currently are. I simply wish people more readily appreciated others’ devotion as opposed to chalking it up to being smarter or more gifted than everybody else. Time and effort are really the biggest factors that set those in the upper echelon apart from the rest
