Koala vrs Sp404mk2 ( which is better )

Honestly I love em both and it depends on what you like doing. The limitations sometimes pushes us to be more creative and something its super frustrating lol

I've loved making music on my ipad for many years, but there really is nothing like the fun of hardware with pads, knobs and buttons. To be honest, I will get a new ipad as they go so well as a way to feed the SP404 mk2.

Get both. Control and Process samples in Koala with the SP's Audio Interfacing Ability lol. Midi Map those koala pads to the SP. Resample the finished product back to the SP. So many workflows with using them both.

Still unsure about buying a SP (next to my Maschine+), but as long as they are poorly available Koala was the way to go for me. In the meanwhile I’ve bought myself an Audio4c interface that let me hook-up my iPad and M+ and route audio between the two. With just the iPad and Koala I have a nice and portable sample workflow and scratchpad for beat making. With AUM in the mix I can route audio (from the M+) in and out effects / FX apps on my iPad, too. And, that’s why I am (or was) considering a SP-404… so thanks for your effort and comparing both, very insightful 🙏🏻 👍🏻

Koala don’t have velocity sensitive on screen pads. SP is more button mashing. Both are portable. Koala doesn’t have an audio interface in it. SP does. For some that doesn’t matter. Koala is faster workflow and SP isn’t. I like both.

The audio interface is no joke , I find myself using it only as an interface. Maybe a few updates down the road we will get a neural splitter on the sp and a koala DAW 😂

The ipad can have an audio interface (I use the universal audio volt 1) in which you can sample into koala and use a 5 pin midi cable. Another thing about koala app is you can "lazy-chop" live audio without recording the whole sample first.

The biggest thing Koala has is the storage space. Stem Exporting, Sampling from video can be done on both and on the SP you don’t have to screen record to do it.

You don’t gotta screen record when you have koala opened in an audio unit host with KZbin audio unit playing. I stopped screen recording because of this on my iPad.

14:51 there's a new feature called snap to zero crossing that lets you remove the pop without using the envelope.

Thanks for the watching. At the end of the day it comes down to what you want to do . For me they are both tools to make music with . I'm showing that my workflow is the same . I use the Machine mk3 and mpc live , ableton , bm3 the same way . I guess when I made this video , I saw so many people holding their breath to get their hands on the sp404mk2 because it was back ordered but they could do most of the same things on something else ( koala ). I guess thats the point

my ipad is almost always usb connected to the mk2 .... the mk2 is better than koala ... but is the mk2 better than an ipad.. hard to say , i like both

There is no *better* just best for you. Nobody’s opinion in is valid to your situation except yours. Ask 100 people and you’ll get 100 unique answers. Nobody is trying to carry a MPC to the top of Mt Fuji. I have MPCs, DAWs, and notebooks but I travel with Cubasis on an Android tablet. This is best for travel for me. Your personal mileage may vary greatly.

@09:01 That's twice now you've mentioned gate wrongly. Gate is when you have to keep your finger on it or it cuts off ; you changed it to one shot or retrigger both times though.

The crackling, bad audio is processor inefficiency (meager Apple hardware and specs from ram to mainboard). What ELF AUDIO needs to do is get their PC app up to snuff. This way you can use a Surface Pro series and easily streamline it for better performance. Why people keep giving Apple all this money for lackluster hardware is unbelieveably insane.

I think sp has more samples than koala not the other way around like you said. The sp mkii has 10 banks of 16 samples where koala only has 4 pages of 16 samples. 160 vs 64.
