Crazy crazy day here in Tahiti there were lots of people on jet skis making it very hard for people who were trying to paddle into waves.

the amount of towers taking paddle-able waves from the paddlers is disgraceful. half the tow waves where smaller than the paddle ones. Ironically, half of the people towing are hawaiians who complain about haoles taking waves from the locals.

Not sure if you saw Nate's video from the same day, at least I think it was the same day.. He got in early and got out early, he got some good ones and got out to watch the show..he said it was a weird crazy day.

This swell wasn't as big as expected. They were obviously all prepped to tow. I agree that the small tow waves should have been paddled. But Matahi had that one bomb and others guys had some good tow waves. You have to let the locals set the tone for the day.
@cito2316
@cito2316 Жыл бұрын
There is ONE person who makes that call. If you know you know. Agree on those 5'ers being towed was weird. There were a few that were tow waves. Poto's kid had one, Matahi had one. Tika had one. I thought Ivan had the biggest best paddle waves of any visitor and he doesn't whine.
@petecabrina
@petecabrina Жыл бұрын
The locals need to declare paddle only on a day like this or something, this is solid surf but its not 'CODE RED' and it is really not a tow in type situation, paddle only makes it more fair and a bit more of a pure experience for everyone. And honestly some of these tow ins are really a bit pathetic and on paddle in waves.
@webleeoz
@webleeoz Жыл бұрын
yea, not sure if its because we have seen some heavy tow days there or what... but a bunch of the tow waves looked like paddle waves. Not all, but most. I like the rule at Shipsterns, paddlers always have priority
@petecabrina
@petecabrina Жыл бұрын
@@webleeoz maybe they were expecting bigger or something, a few did look like tow ins but most weren't.
@lifeoflennie2443
@lifeoflennie2443 Жыл бұрын
@webleeoz Yeah I think it's not as bad here cause you're able to separate the tow group from the paddlers... cause it's all so perfect... sheet glass wave pool type situation where you can keep it separate, knowing exactly what the ski wakes are doing , etc... But yeah it all gets ruined if any tow guy takes ANYTHING a paddler was keen on...as happened here a couple times

I remember when Stewart and Severson hit this place and it was in all the bodyboarding magazines as "somewhere in Tahiti". Stewart just called it Teahupoʻo. No one knew how to pronounce it correctly but we all slanged it to "chopes". So here's this guy in the 90s, in his late 30's paddling in and dropping on bombs on a lid and all our minds got blown by the wave. Fast-forward to 2023 and you got a crowded lineup and these guys are fucking towing on a 6ft day? Are they doing that at 6ft Pipe next too? That was the equivalent of shoulder popping but instead coming in early so no one else could get on. Like paying someone to climb an epic mountain and getting in every mountaineers way. How could a surfer do that and not feel like a total asshole and just tow out and do it AGAIN?

Love the no music, raw feel of this video. I love music in many of your videos, but this one hit it perfectly with just the sheer power and booming sound. Yes, the tow in surfers were a disturbance and honestly kind of ridiculous , looking foolish towing 8 feet waves.

@@jd32k yes… on a 10’-12’ day you don’t typically paddle for a 5 footer… In terms of faces, you don’t go out on a 20’-25’ day to paddle into an 8’-10’ wave. Those smaller size waves at Teahupoo don’t actually barrel good on the big days.

I feel like I'm becoming a serial commentor on your videos but I gotta say that This Is Livin is a perfect title. Your job is surfing. You live in paradise in what looks like a pretty rad house.
