Koa, I am 63, live in Alaska, and the extent of my surfing was boogie boarding on a couple of vacations when I was in my 20's and 30's. Basically, no surfing background. That said, I like to watch big wave surfing on the internet sometimes and I came across your channel when you were in Fiji. I have watched a few more of your videos because I like your format and your personality. You are always positive and you show the life of a pro surfer to be a serious one. Up at dawn with your coffee during a competition. I think your message of 'work hard, have fun and take what life gives you and make the most of it," is a good one for not only young surfers interested in becoming a pro's but all people in general. You are a good role model. Well done young man!

Yeah. I'm 60 and live in Minnesota--not Alaska by any stretch but I get it. I grew up in SoCal but was never going to be a surfer myself but love the sport. Koa has great form and is really fun to watch and a great role model. Love it when random people realize he's on the beach with them--always so gracious and generous with his fans.

I think everyone has had that day where they took out the wrong board, knowing better, and got stuck sitting out there trying to figure out how the hell to get back in. Sun starts to set and you just wind up getting a beating to get in. Fun times. Good to read everyone's stories! Thanks for sharing guys and gals.

I'm glad I watched the whole clip before commenting...he said EXACTLY what i was gonna say 3:17 "...What were we thinking?..." Lol I've had a couple 6'4"s an 6'3"s that i have felt pretty confident on...but NOT even close to Hawaiian 20 footers! LOL Crazy he just laughs it off! Rothman blood running strong!

Haha, yea I surfed a rising swell at first light. Started out with 15' faces and by the end if the day they were over 30'. Sitting out there with guys on guns and I'm on a 6'6 , barley scrapped into one wave in before the sunset. Damn near crapped my wetsuit.

Exactly my experience today. The only board I could get my hands on was a 5'0 groveler (I'm 6'2 210lbs) and I tried to take it out in overhead hollow surf... Caught 7 waves in 4 hours and wiped out on takeoff on all except one and on that one I got a 2 second ride and almost hit a rock and had to bail

Yep, out at my local about 5pm on my 6'6, swells picking up prob 15 feet paddle from the sand bar channel round this rock reef cause I know it's about 8ft smaller on that side waves were dumping on the beach took off as getting dark, dis3 full somersault where my feet landed on the sand just to get in...lifeguard who came out thought he seen a ghost when I paddle round 😁🤙

A 6.4” in 15 to 20” surf? I’d say that’s the gangster equivalent of “taking a knife to a gun fight” mate! The fact that you found it hilarious makes it even funnier!

It immediately reminded me of Ben Gravy and Jamie O'Brien heading out in the surf... Jamie carrying an appropriate North Shore designed stick while Gravy had some silly twin-fin trick soft-top board that belonged out at Kaisers, Threes, Pops, or da Bowl. Too funny.

Koa, Nathan and company are the new titans of big wave surfing. Maybe surfing a 6'4" on a 20 foot day isn't the best idea? I have my "This Is Livin'" sticker on my camper now. I am going to the desert this weekend to tear up some dunes on my quad. Everyone will see and admire my sticker and flock to this blog to see what all the hype is about. You guys are KILLING IT! : ) 16:50 thanks for sharing a "bowl" with us Koa! :)

Log Cabins and Banzai Rocks were two spots I really loved to surf. Log Cabins would rarely produce a decent left so when it did it would come up out of the northwest made for an incredibly potent tubular wave. Log Cabins is regarded as a right. So, any deviation in direction often resulted in spectacular waves. As for Banzai Rocks... Well, one of the most epic and memorable body surfing experiences I have ever been treated to happened at this spot. A clean, slight off-shore left with the take-off spot being just slightly to the west of the rocks and finished a good hundred yards or more to the east. Just me and my brudda Jeff scoring unreal surf for hours. October surf. Amazing. Indelible memory. Oh, and the aching stomach and groin from going so fast across the water... Auwee. It was worth it!

Im getting into surfing. Why is a bigger board better for larger waves. Wouldn't the short board be more agile and "faster"? Also, how do you guess what size board you will need?
@westaylor6360
@westaylor6360 4 жыл бұрын
Bigger waves travel faster than smaller ones Bigger boards paddle faster than smaller ones Therefore a bigger faster paddling board makes it easier to catch the bigger faster waves and are more stable when up and riding which makes handling any bumps or chop a lot more manageable...
