To encourage Kendo-ka all over the world, e-bogu offers free educational videos (Kendo Principles) for remote learning without Dojo practice against the COVID-19 pandemic.
Kendo Principles Part IV explains the major techniques of Kendo using two Swords (Nito-Ryu). Miyamoto Musashi, the most famous Samurai in the Japanese history, has developed the Nito-Ryu technique during a combat. This video illustrates correct examples, and incorrect moves which are common to new students. It can also be a useful self-training guide for Kenshis who wants to learn Nito-ryu and have an in-depth understanding of the advanced techniques.
Dojo Instructors can also take full use of this video as an additional instructional material for their students. This video is all narrated in English, for easy understanding and the camera is taken from various angles. Many slow motion shots is taken to illustrate good and bad examples from different angles.
All techniques and moves are explained by Matthew Raymond (Black Belt 5th Dan), one of the most famous Nito-Ryu Kenshis in the world. He has learned his Nito-Ryu techniques during his long training in Osaka, Japan. Matthew has won many big titles and he is currently member of the Canadian national team participating in four World Kendo Championships, placing 3rd place in 1994 and 2000.
BASIC TECHNIQUES: [Sonkyo, Seiza, Kamae (Jodan - Daito, Jodan - Shoto), Distance, Tsubazeriai, Okuri Ashi, Datotsu (Men-Uchi, Kote-Uchi, Do-Uchi, Tsuki-Uchi)]
ADVANCED TECHNIQUES: [Combinations (Kote-Men, Kote-Do), Debana Waza (Debana Men, Debana Kote, Debana Do), Hiki Men, Hiki Kote, Hiki Do, Kakarigeiko, Kirikaeshi, Zanshin]

"I started Kendo in Brazil in 1975, and since then I have visited many different Dojos all over the world. I was very fortunate to have been taught by many different Senseis, who were all great instructors. They taught me not only Kendo techniques, but also the fundamentals of human character. I would like to thank all my Senseis and fellow Kenshis, who had the patience to practice Kendo with me. Many people asked me if there is a good instructional Kendo Video in languages other than Japanese, and I was not successful finding one. This is the reason I decided to develop one myself, with the hope that it will help many people interested in Kendo outside of Japan. Matthew (Kendo 5th Dan) is my Canadian Kendo National Team teammate, as well as my long time friend. I am very glad to have him be part of this video, because I consider his Nito-Ryu techniques one of the best in the world. Without him, making of this video would not have been possible. I am open to any comments or suggestions, in order to improve the quality in the next edition of this video series."

I'm suprised that this was posted 5 months ago because I've been hunting for my dad (who is Matthew Raymond) on youtube for a while and I finally found this video but he looks SUPER young compared to what he actually looked like 5 months ago, I can tell this is my dad because he wears glasses and he has a really deep voice. My dad uses two shinnai/ swords in kendo, if this is not my actually dad than this is his long lost twin or something 😂

Yes, you are right. This is Matthew Raymond! Of course he is young since this video was shot in 2003, 17 years ago. Since a lot of people can't practice Kendo because of Covid-19, e-bogu and I have decided to show this video on KZbin to support their practicing and disciplines. Your dad is a very strong gentleman!

A very nice video. As reliable material for nito is quite tricky to find (unless you speak japanese) when you go at it alone without a master, this is definitely a must, especially for etiquette and of course basics that are, as in itto, everything. Thank you.

I don't have any experience with Nito, but didn't Musashi write that you should walk "normally", like you would in your day to day life, when practicing Nito Ryu?
@miyu_myu21
@miyu_myu21 3 жыл бұрын
Im probably wrong Maybe ur talking about niten ichi ryu cause most that i see they walk normally or just watch my stupid video lol imma sellout
@T11theonly
@T11theonly 3 жыл бұрын
absolutely not. In nito you need to maintain proper form otherwise your strike will probably be rubbish. Maybe it's more about the foot placement as, regarding nito "all goes "(right or left forward) as long as the strike achieve ki ken tai and that you observe reigi. Not much else i can say from my experience though
@Masiyooo
@Masiyooo 2 жыл бұрын
that lesson is meant for soldiers who fought in all kinds of terrains. it was important to only have one natural way of walking in combat because you might go from gravel, to grass, to swamp, to hard floor of an interior during the span of warfare. if you only practiced stepping fit for hard floor, you'd be in big trouble on a softer footing. recreational kendo happens almost exclusively on hard ground so there is little reason to walk normally when there are more optimal ways of utilizing the floor.

maybe checkout the various koryu kenjutsu (it's broken down into a lot of schools and quite some of them does nito) and hyoho niten ichi ryu demonstrations on youtube, kendo can be a bit limited as action references because it's very specialized toward it's rules of competitions.

There's many other techniques your missing when you limit yourself to a book. What feels natural can become an excuse to not explore other options that u can make natural as well. You have much to learn still.
