I have a naturally sensitive personality, so this fostered a high sense of perfectionism, fear of failure, social anxiety and performance anxiety. But I know my parents were just trying their best with what they knew, and were trying to be better than their own parents and despite that have given me a wonderful life. Now I’m an adult and can work on my issues myself, and figure out how I’d want to raise my own kids.

Asian kids who get scolded so harshly after making mistakes when they were young know how much it affects your self esteem as you get older. Often times I would rather not try anything because I think it’s so embarrassing for other people to see me make mistakes. I can’t blame my dad about that though since he’s exactly the same as me because he was raised that way.

As a person living with chronic anxiety, watching this family has helped me reprogram my brain to think more positively. I told my therapist about this, and she said that it’s great practice and one that she’s gonna recommend to others whose mental health struggles come from negative parenting. “It’s okay to make mistakes.” “It’s fine, we can clean it up” “It’s okay to be sad.” Those have been my daily mantra. All credits go to Anna. Such a wonderful family!
