it is really hard for me to think anything besides that this video is Kodak giving a soliloquy about being betrayed by his childhood best friend before wiping his nose. this video is hair-raising and if nothing else you can feel the eerie energy and Kodak's passion coming off the screen. the story of the snake and the mongoose is an African folklore that goes back thousands of years. in the west / white world it's known through the story "RIkki-Tikki-Tavi" by Rudyard Kipling, where he basically lifted the story wholesale and adapted it. i don't know much about Haitian culture but my guess is they tell the mongoose story too and it might even have a lot of meaning to Haitians. "a mongoose can get bit by any snake...he a pop up...an hour or two..". that's about as clear an allegory of surviving betrayal as you're gonna get. the mongoose is the eternal underdog, the "david" to goliath, the little one who prevails. 3:08 as kodak is recounting the tale of the mongoose surviving the snake bite, his face is full of intensity, he's smiling but his eyes are glittering and his face is tightened with malice, the smile of a man who survived the backstab. 3:23 the look he gives the camera here speaks for itself in my opinion. the content of the song is clearly coming from a real and personal place with him. the choice of the mafia theme is meaningful here too. Wiz and Kodak are the only two "main characters" that appear in the video. why is it only them at the table, with Kodak at the head of the table and Wiz on the side? as Kodak says "after this we finna celebrate!" and throws his arm around Wiz it feels like Michael Corleone kissing Fredo. never mind that Wiz was killed in the same way that Kodak shows to Wiz in the final skit. i'm really not trying to put too much on it, but what else can you think watching something like this? the beat is both beautiful, nostalgic, eerie, and suitable for a funeral march.
