It's amazing how American and European Kodak Carousel slide projectors from the 70s and 80s were absolutely different machines with I don't think even one shared part.

And if both sides are shiny how do I put it on the carousel.

Well, not sure without looking at the slide. Maybe the cardboard or plastic holder can give you a clue. However, it doesn’t hurt anything putting in the slide the wrong way. You might be able to tell which direction to put it in based on the image projected. If it looks like it’s in the wrong way (looks like a mirror image) just turn it around.
