I agree on the vintage vibe color plus has, and think it's best on outdoor sunny scenes. I bounce between this and ultramax most of the time if I'm shooting 35mm color. Great video as usual.

Love it when people go to the trouble of actually looking at the detail in images to see the difference. Thanks for your time and trouble. I have both Gold and Plus in my fridge and pretty much shoot them exclusively because of the colours they give. However I'm terrible at shooting colour and so cheapness does play a part. To me, they look significantly different which is enough for me to keep both stocks. Nice work as always. Keep safe.

Definitely prefer ColorPlus to Gold for that vintage look. I actually use the Kodak VR preset in Silverfast to get the best look out of it. Dead on with the more muted blues, especially compared to UltraMax where skies can get super saturated. The grain on ColorPlus is still reasonable, I routinely use it in a half frame camera and the results are usable. Great video!

ColorPlus 200 is a nice underrated film. Great video! 😁 Like you mentioned, I’ve heard ColorPlus 200 (like C200) is an older emulsion. Yep, it has a nice grainy look to it, and works best exposed with bright even light. Def a film for that old school saying, that we should “shoot with the sun to our backs.”

Gold and Colorplus are definitely related, as far as I understand, Colorplus is effectively VR Gold 200 while Gold kept being evolved through the 80s, 90s and 00s into what we have today.

I thought my canon pro 1000 had a clogged print head nozzle or two when I saw the first print. Calm down Davey it was the grain of the film. I watched this vid and saw the grain in your images. Film will never be the last invited to a party. As for digital BW it could do with new software refinement if possible. My old eyes see the difference. Film BW has the tonal range that digital can only dream about.

It does remind me of Kodacolor of yesteryears, and it is quite welcome IMHO. I sometimes think that we unwittingly try and make film look like the dreaded digital in post process. This film is a good reminder of how things should look like on a film. I don't do fashion or modern arty stuff, but I think this film is perfect for a retro fashion look of the 70s or Eggleston like photography. The price of these films, however have sky rocketed. Surprising as the film and film consumption is becoming more popular the price is increasing and the availability decreasing. Profit is the order of the day.
@pushingfilm
@pushingfilm 3 жыл бұрын
Yes! I love the look. And apparently, Eggleston didn't shoot everything on Kodachrome and actually used a fair bit of Kodacolor for much of his known work.

Any chance of an Ultramax 400 comparison? I’ve seen a lot of photographers hate on it but when I look at their comparisons to other Kodaks I tend to like the Ultramax’s less yellow, more natural colours.

I am currently not sure about colorplus as i started my film journey recently only. Of the iso 200 films I feel I have somewhat good handle on fujic200 and Kodak gold. Love fujic200 for amazing greens and brown to shoot in rain. Gold gives the classic warm for summer feel and vintage look and again gives great results. Like the colorplus but need to use it more to form an opinion.

I have shot colorplus and gold200, colour plus is way better. Gold200 is less saturated and is more dusty or dry. Its still good but its very hit or miss. Blues and greens look really bad on gold aswell. Colorplus is saturated but with a gold cast which is clear in the sunlight (not suprisingly). It works in a massive range of situations and their is no bias in colours or tones. For me atleast

ColorPlus 200 punches way above its weight considering it's pretty much retro technology compared Protra, Ektar and Ultramax, and that's ok. I generally overexpose at 100 ISO and get pleasing results.

I just ran a roll of ColorPlus (box speed and lab scanned) and was a bit disappointed with the rendering of the sky. That particular day was partly cloudy - quite dappled. Subjects were primarily ground-level, so I was metering there. They came out with great colour. However, there was pretty much no structure to the clouds. The sky was basically completely blown out unless there was significant blue. Your sample image at 5:32 has a very hazy-looking sky that's pretty representative of the sort of sky component that I was getting. If that's the norm for ColorPlus, I can deal with it and chose compositions to suit. Is this normal or was it specific to my roll/metering/processing?
@pushingfilm
@pushingfilm 2 жыл бұрын
I think that's how the sky kind of looked near the horizon at the time... and the scan also wasn't great. I can't tell you for sure if it was specific to any of those factors, but I do see that Colorplus has a bit less dynamic range than some newer film.

Hi, thanks so much for the great feedback! That's unfortunate. I tried to look, but couldn't find any datasheets online for Kodacolor 200 or anything in that line. Gold 200 probably would be the closest current stock, so that's probably not much help to you. The next closest thing would be the unofficial technical information on the website I linked in the description of the video, if you haven't checked that out yet.

Good video, but it would be crucial to dedicate a portion of the review to the scanning process, especially if it is done at home with a consumer scanner. This is because the scans made by the laboratory are almost always chromatically perfect, but the same cannot be said if you use, for example, Epson Scan.
