Gold 200 coming to 120 was what convinced me to start medium format. Having a cheap, forgiving film was invaluable when I was starting, but even now I still shoot it frequently. Loved the video!!

Larger formats need affordable color film stocks! I think its great that they brought Gold to 120 but if we got proimage and ultramax not just in 120 but in 4x5 as well? I know so many people shooting large format now. every single color film is $60+ for 10 sheets so I think there is potential to expand more consumer film stocks beyond 35mm.

If you are willing to go back another generation from the Gold emulsion, Lomographys color 120 film is rolled from Kodak Master rolls, 100 is last gen proimage, 400 is current colormax and 800 is current or last gen 800 from the disposable camera line. Not the awesome deal you get with gold, but at least a price break from Portra if you don't mind older emulsions.

I’ve been shooting this and XP-2 in my Mamiya 6 with the 50mm f/4 lens. I shoot this at EI 100 (EI 50 sometimes on very bright days), and have been very impressed with the results. Thanks for taking this for a test run! Impressive camera you’ve got there!!

Really like your presenting style. Had a noblex for several years. Even used it as my main "road trip" camera for a couple of years. Got maybe 2 printable images lol. That thing was crazy hard for me to compose with. Loved its long exposure capabilities though. Very unique, as it was in most aspects. Love the channel!

I bought 6 boxes of it and was pleasantly surprised. I will always prefer Portra, but for how much I needed it was great.

Love when you reviewed the Portras back then, my teenage self didn't get to use them till I moved medium format. Funnily I feel that it's always been proportionally expensive as back then had no-low income. A funny remark when Gold was released was the 25% price difference... Well, Ektar and Portras really did increase in price these last couple years. Freezer has some bought below 60-70$/pack for a trip. I just bought the first Gold ever, as in Europe it was going at the Ektar/Portra rate (70$) and now some large dealers have them for 40€ which is... about 50% of Ektar/Portra. So, no brainer to keep the hungry Texas Leica going. My understanding vs P400 is trading a stop, and having the grain of P800.

I enjoy shooting with Gold also. I am more than willing to make some color adjustments in post to make the colors more neutral. However, in many cases I don't mind a warmer look. Great evaluation of the film and very informative. Hard to believe that portra is twice as expensive as gold.

Was my go to film, and the 25 iso for portraits ... I then went to 35mm slide ectachrome and then, of course, digital. Now Canon R5. But I remember my Kodachrome and try to emulate it in Lightroom.

Kodak Gold is, as said, a prior generation of film technology. Compared to a similar ISO Portra, it is about as sharp and a little bit grainier. Although I find its latitude to be completely sufficient, it does lack the extended latitude of Portra. For my purposes (landscapes), its slight warm bias is fine, as I make real darkroom prints, where the extensive corrections in digital processing are not available. In 120 size, whatever image performance it gives up to Portra is completely irrelevant in all normal print sizes. Its lower price is a bonus.

I had that noblex back in the day. Since the noblex pans sort of slow, the scene sort of has to not move and you can just shoot conventional the vast majority of the time. Wide angle lens, 3 shots, and you are done or you can keep going for a 360 which the noblex could not do of course. Its so easy to stitch images together now, that is what killed the noblex for me.

You must have had a 6x17 version as the 6x12 has 6 frames per roll. Compared to my Widelux F7 there is a delay with the Noblex as it uses the first 1/4 to get up to speed and the last 1/4 to stop but these is also seldom any banding issues unlike a Widelux that has not been maintained properly.

Over here in Sweden its even worse.... 68$ for 5 pack 120 Kodak Gold and 102$ for 5 pack of Porta 160 (120). 10 sheets of 4x5 Ektar or Porta is also 100$ :(

@@FIGITALREVOLUTION yeah luckily we have cheaper prices for B/W Ilford and Fomapan, Im going to the New Mexico next week and I might stock up on some film but Im abit afraid of all the X-rays, 3 connections and all :D

If it’s slow like 160 or 200 just hand inspect and all should be good!

The Noblex and the Wide lux are expensive. The Horizon is way cheaper. Nice photos. You want warm looking photos for nature. I think actor Jeff Bridges and his wife want to put out a new line of these cameras.
