Why do we have to ask whether a DevOps engineer needs to know to code??? for me, it's a redundant question; DevOps contains two words dev= developer and Ops= Operations itself; of course, you do not need to be a professional software developer; but at least you need to know how to code by using one or several programming languages (if you can). I used to be a networking engineer; if someone asks me whether a networking engineer needs to know how to code, I will say yes. I wish I could choose it as an option, but we cannot ignore the reality if we do not want to be left behind.

95% tasks in devops world are executing with bash. But in the nearby future this percentage will be slowly replaced by python and go. Start coding on py or go, before matrix has you! 😈

I don't know any network administrator or engineer who hasn't got some level of understanding or experience of scripting or at least one 'programming' language. But they are not 'developers'. I know some developers, and they are somewhat different to operations or infrastructure staff (even in the way they think). The good thing is, knowing something of both benefits the organisation - especially in automation.
