Emily Lee grew up in the Apostolic United Brethren. Her close friends included Christine Brown's younger sister. She attended school where Meri Brown and her siblings attended, Bonnie Barber was Emily's principal. When Kody came to dances, Emily distinctly remembers his need to be the center of attention. She also remembers her father, the prophet of the AUB being very upset about Kody going public with the show.
Now a mother of 5 children, Emily is speaking out for the first time about being raised with 5 moms and a dad that was never around. She wants church members to know the truth about her father, fans to understand the reality of families in the AUB & is urging TLC to cancel Sister Wives and start supporting survivors.

Thank you for watching this important interview. Emily Lee shares her harrowing story of being raised in the Apostolic United Brethren. Her father, David Watson, is the current prophet of the cult. Emily wants everyone to know that there is help available if you need to leave Polygamy. She relied on the Holding Out Help in the years after she fled the abusive cult. If you need help or need to leave, please go here: holdingouthelp.org If you are local in Utah, Holding Out Help is in need of volunteers, safe houses, and supplies for adults and children that flee these groups. If you wish to donate to the group that helped save Emily, please click here: holdingouthelp.networkforgood.com// Please help Emily’s story be heard by liking, commenting and sharing this video. The more people that see this the higher likelihood that this will reach someone trapped inside. Thanks for listening, giving space for Emily. Thanks to Emily for her bravery sharing her story, and for trusting WOACB to help her tell that story. ❤ Katie

@@janshe3597 - After watching Escaping Polygamy & getting to know the amazing women on that show, I started listening to Amanda Rae’s channel. I agree, she can be a bit all over the place sometimes and intense, but given her upbringing, I think she does amazingly well. The way that she explains the Kingston Group & all the in’s & out’s of it all, has been mind blowing, especially the numbered man piece. She filters very little & often brings on guests, including some of her siblings who have also gotten out.

What makes me angry at them is that they have to know abuse is taking place. Kody’s tantrums should come with a trigger warning, because that is abuse. It doesn’t have to be physical to be abuse. Psychological abuse is harder to see, but no abuse can take place without the brainwashing and gaslighting. Men yelling at me just about makes my heart stop, as I have CPTSD. Kody uses his anger and verbal abuse to manipulate his wives and children. It infuriates me that that behavior is normalized.

I grew up in the AUB. So much of this sounds familiar to me. I attended the AUB school between 1973 and 1979. I knew the Watsons and the Barbers, but I was a lot older than anyone on Sister Wives. I left the group in 1984. I hadn't taken the time necessary to analyze the ideological problems. I was only 17. I just knew that what I was seeing was unfair and I was unhappy. That couldn't be right. It takes a lot of courage to discuss this publicly. When you're simply telling your own story people come out of the woodwork to try to discredit your reputation. They can't challenge the truth of the stories told by people like Emily so that's what they do to try to prevent the truth from getting out.

I remember when an uncle came to visit he brought a box of Lucky Charms I’d never seen a box of Lucky Charms or ever eaten Lucky Charms. Potato’s and bread, going behind grocery stores, looking in dumpsters to eat! Yes Therapy is key! Yup we were required to call other wives Aunt. The 3rd wife for me was a safe space. Life after leaving a cult is so difficult. You don't get the "normal" family relationships that you've been taught FROM BIRTH are the most important parts of your life. It's hard to feel like you can't talk to people who abused you, and who brain-washed you. It's hard to find a way to rationalize the things you need to ignore to have ANY relationships. It's HARD, in a different way from what anyone who hasn't been there can comprehend. There is so much community out here of former children of cultists, we need to share our support and our stories and make our own families.

Thank you Katie and Emily, this was a very insightful interview. I wouldn't give Kody Brown any latitude for not being 'as bad' as some of the men Emily spoke about. Lets remember Kody Brown is another of the men who buys into this psychologically and emotionally destructive misogynistic clap trap. Repression of women, and use of women as commodities under the guise of an ideology constructed to serve egotistical male dominance is disgusting regardless of the different personalities practising its doctrine. Keep up the great work Katie ❤

I’m so glad you bring these cults to light. I have to remember when I was 16 I was making college visits and deciding which ones to apply to. My dad and mom were insistent that we were GOING to go to college after high school. This was back in the 60’s and not every man thought his daughter needed to be educated past high school. In fact my in-laws thought that girls who lived at the dorms were loose. I was very uncomfortable after I realized that was their attitude when I started to date their son!

Katie, this was so insightful and informative. Emily seemed so nervous to begin with but you made her feel comfortable as the interview went on. I truly appreciate how open she was with her past; living as a child in the polygamist cult. I’m so sorry that she had to live through the abuse and isolation, but I’m so glad that she found a husband who is also a good father. Shouldn’t you be proud of your beliefs and your life instead of being encouraged to lie about what is real. How did she remember all the do’s and don’t’s? I send her love and encouragement as she moves on with her life. ❤

I sympathize so much! Being raised in a cult & being so indoctrinated & having a brain that’s hard wired with cult mentality can be so difficult! The only way to explain it is, it’s like being in a foreign country & not speaking the language. I can try to explain it to the outsiders & they just can’t “get it”. It’s definitely like starting at 0. Cults are past down from generation to generation unless us Ex members end the cycle!! Very well done 👍🏼

Katie, this show was one of the most brave and bold interviews I have ever seen. I watched it ALL. I am 62 and was watching with my 81 year old Mom. She teases me about my Sister Wives addiction. I have been watching since day one. Since then I have been unexpectedly widowed and remarried so I can relate to PTSD and a lot of trauma the way my spouse died. I have to say I was CONVICTED about supporting this show and thereby supporting their lifestyle. I will continue to tune into you and your AUB insights but I am no longer a Sister Wives fan or watcher. I just can’t. Listening to Emily I feel we are all getting played. Are they really split or is it just for ratings? We know Christine is. Unless there is a Leaving Polygamy show, count me out! I started watching this show just to see if it would work and got invested in the family. Well, I got my answer. It doesn’t. That’s all Folks!
