It's amazing being able to see and hear a lost instrument from the 1500s. As an organist in the 1800s studying history the best I would've gotten was an obscure reference and possibly drawing in a book and only able to imagine what it could've possible been like to experience the apple regal.

This is actually a Knopfregal. An Aprfelregal would have a bulb at the top with many holes. this instead is a knob with a slit at the top that meets 2 opposing holes.

The resonators (apples) are made of apple wood, and plated with gold. You can find more information on the instrument on the website of the builder, just search for Orgelbau Koegler Apfelregal, and you'll find it really quick. This instrument is a masterpiece and i am pretty sure it features not a single plastic part, as the builder states they pride themselves in traditional construction.

Also Appleshelt !!!

@@screambmachine the english word for regal is not portable reed organ..... its a totally different instrument. a reed organ is not related to a regal. the official english word for a regal is simply "regal"

@@Herr_Flick_of_ze_Gestapo I'm not an instrument expert at all, but here are four sources that say that the regal is indeed a reed organ / harmonium, however it does not mean that all reed organs are a regal of course. "The Regal. This musical instrument is a prototype of the modern harmonium [which is a reed organ btw]. The term 'Regal' could be used to mean a portable organ or an instrument with a keyboard that is non-portable depending upon the location." - United Archives "The instrument that can be seen and heard in this video, called "Apfelregal", was meticulously and lovingly reconstructed by master organ builder Christian Kögler from St. Florian near Linz (Austria): A woodcut by Hans Weiditz from 1518 which showed the Emperor Maximilian I. with his court chapel and his court organist Paul Hofhaimer at the Apfelregal, served as a model. As early as 1506, the emperor had this extraordinary reed wind instrument built for his court organist, who was already famous during his lifetime. The choir-like Apfelregal with its gold plated apple wood bell, which act as resonators for the reed pipes, ..." - organforum. com/forums/forum/pipe-organs/classic-church-pipe-organs/753576-apfelregal "Regal English, German The Regal was an ancient keyboard reed instrument, dating from the 14th or 15th century. The name was later used for early reed stops whose tones were presumably imitative or suggestive of the instrument. The name Regal is used as a generic term for a whole family of reed stops, typified by short, often oddly shaped resonators, and having a wide variety of tones, usually lacking in fundamental. Particularly in northern Germany roughly between 1575 and 1700, organ-builders experimented with a wide variety of resonator forms, giving rise to fanciful names that suggested either the forms of the resonators or the tones they produced." - organstops .org/r/Regal .html "The musical instrument known as the regal or regalle (from Middle French régale) is a small portable organ, furnished with beating reeds and having two bellows." - Wikipedia
