People who complain about screen placement are completely missing the point. You cant put this screen anywhere else. If you put on topside like Komodo, its gonna make the camera super wide and smaller size monitor on the other hand cant fit the really amazing Blackmagic OS menus in it. The screen is designed to use for blackmagic menus. The fact that you can also monitor video feed from it, is an EXTRA BONUS.

I've been saying the same thing about the monitor word for word since intro day. Who doesn't rig out a box camera with their own monitor? Nobody. Many people are being knuckleheads about the Pyxis. Rarely have I ever seen a camera inspire so much undeserved Internet bitching, it's kind of astounding how negative people have been when BMD responded exactly to user requests. Just goes to show how ungrateful and miserable a lot of trolls are. The Pyxis will be a great seller and for some reason, people are pissed about that? This has also proven that contrary to popular opinion, a huge majority of people don't understand the difference between a cinema camera (Pyxis) and a video camera (FX3). Two different mindsets about how to shoot. Cinema cameras most often don't have internal NDs, don't have auto focus, don't have IBIS. Mirrorless and video cameras do have these features. So why bitch that a cinema camera doesn't have video camera features?

Most of black magic’s customers are more familiar with mirrorless style body’s. @@danbrockettDOP I have used bmpcc4k since 2020 and i love that camera apart from its awkward body shape that makes it bit cumbersome for many situations and riggings. But I always loved the menu ecosysyem, its the best OS out there, period. I always wondered how they gonna put it in Cube form factor without giving up menu functionality. To me it seems like they figured the best and most reasonable way to use it right now. Only way it could be better, is to not use any display at all and make an proprietary external touch display with menu functions. But i guess that would make this camera production at least 1/3 more expensive.

As long as they property tweaked the imx410 sensor this time, it should be a pretty good camera. Since the bmcc6k full frame, which used the same sensor had horrible issues, such as banding and heavy noise at low light, and the dynamic range and high iso performance is even slighty below the old s35 bmpcc6k.

Yoooo! Appreciate this content and that’s from someone not even in line to buy any cinema camera. I only have an a6000 and I’m not in the industry at all. From the outside looking in, for the price point, it seems like a no brainer and I imagine the same thing will happen for modular gear in that people will complain but there will be a whole bunch of people not interested in engaging with any of the socials but will love the thing to death. Seems like they listened, worked hard to offer a product that is their camera in the spirit of their cameras. Feel like if we all haven’t figured out that we need to experience things to really make final calls on them we’ll never learn. Otherwise products would only develop for the spec sheet. Thanks again! DP's/Videographers/Cam Ops/Creators can choose the camera that works best for their style/budget/type of work. Exactly. If the Pyxis, or any other camera doesn't fit your needs, don't buy it. Buy the tools that fit your work flow and type of productions. I am fortunate to have different clients that have different types of productions. I have cinema cameras... FX6, R5c, Komodo, Ronin 4d 8k. But I also use the Canon XF605 camcorder for ENG type productions, live events or when needing an all in one solution for when filming overseas, sports and wildlife. Each tool great but very different.

For what my opinion is worth I think its fantastic that Blackmagic are now on the road of the box camera, this opens up the future of their products so much more than just Pocket and Ursa. The only thing I can really criticise BM for is the lack of ProRes RAW, Codecs are far more important than the placement of what is essentially a settings screen (unless you're on sticks) and anyone buying a camera like this would be far better off buying a mountable screen as its easily replaced if damaged or superseded. One last thing ; The Pyxis has also shown what incredible value the BMCC FF actually is especially in a Multicam setup with the Pyxis.

Everyone that has been complaining seem to be used to still camera form factors. As an AC, I'm used to everything that it has, only thing that i wish it had is internal ND. But even that, I'm used to using IRNDs. So yea, this would be great for shooting an indie feature. For this price, its worth it.

Zcam E2F6 Pro has native Vmount and is $4K. Though if you’re powering multiple accessories from the Vmount then it’s better to have a Vmount plate with multiple ports. I’d suggest looking into what Zcam is doing. They are a smaller company, but they are a direct competitor to Blackmagic. The Zcam E2F6 (not the pro, the regular) is also a 6K full frame box style camera, and is also $3K… with interchangeable lens mounts, and 15 stops dynamic range. I did a deep dive comparing the Pyxis to the Zcam E2F6 on my channel. But I made the same point, not every camera is right for every shooter.

Bruh... Thank you for making this video. I have never seen SOOOO MUCH negativity from people about a product that they aren't even going to use. Worse, ALL of it is from perspectives that just didn't even need to say anything. "Why doesn't it have XYZ feature that this other ($20k) camera has?"... because it isn't $20k... "I'm mad just because it doesn't exactly perfectly fit my use case"... it isn't for you then.. maybe? But guess what? I mostly shoot narrative work with some overly cinematic doc stuff sprinkled in from time to time. I've been looking for a camera that; 1, is full frame 2, has a native PL mount, 3, records some flavor of RAW, and it would be nice 4, it records to external media... Which camera does that....? The PYXIS literally checks ALL of my boxes. All of the negativity seems to be coming from people who don't have a horse in the very specific race that the PYXIS is made for. It is for Cinema... that is all.

I love that, IF THE CAMERA IS NOT FOR YOU DONT BUY IT, for the price its a no brainer, I have several blackmagic cameras including the new micro G2 and the 12K ursa, for the most part if you have been showing for a while you most likely have peripherals that will assist you in building the camera out without having to buy much more, finally someone that tells it the way it is and had a few or more than a few minutes with the camera in hand, which is much more than the hundreds expressing opinions just reading from information provided by blackmagic and if they already did not like the brand are quick to point out the negatives, I have and order in for 2 and also for the new 12K , call me crazy but its my money.

I was one of the people who really had issue with the rolling shutter. But thanks for pointing out it can be fixed in resolve. That’s the NLE I use & now I couldn’t give less of a shit. Most stuff I’m working on with others they will want it in ProRes or smth anyways so I can throw that on before sending it to them.

Just for the modularity of the box design, Open Gate, that they still kept the Gyro Data capablilty, as well as the side screen still having the Blackmagic UI, the PYXIS is great to me. It will pair well with my Pocket 6K Pro and this will be great to rig up for gimbal shots and other utility purposes, where my Pocket can be for more handheld and less abrasive in public due to it's design. I'd like to get one as soon as possible, but I'll probably end up getting the pro version by the time it's viable to justify a third cinema camera!

As video guys we often have more than one camera, probably different mounts and different manufacturers too. We just grab whatever we need for whatever circumstances we are in. We all know very well what we are getting into when we grab a BM, and we are glad to. It's really an artistic and pragmatic choice, for something really safe we just grab the Sony etc. I am a bit surprised that people aren't celebrating for more affordable and diverse selection of gears!

i totally agree with this perspective. all these years people have been BEGGING for a modular box style camera from BMD and when they get it there are a bunch of complaints. what really got me was the amount of flack they got for the screen. while i personally would rather have an ursa style flip out it isn't necessary for this type of camera. the point of it being a box is so it can be rigged out. if people need something with more features built in that is what the pocket and ursa series are for, if the cam doesn't fit your needs, just dont get it

strangely enough, the screen placement is absolutely fine considering its size. I think that when people that actually want to buy this have it in their hands, it will make perfect sense. Any box shaped camera when placed at the height it will likely be used will be best served with an external or eye VF anyway. I think what got peoples feathers ruffled was likely a lot of click bate ish tittles that sound very much like every other camera release where cameras are killers of others that have very different specs and ideal use cases. To each their own though of course as money needs to be made and stories need to be told by any means necessary.

I just don't understand the hateful comments on an opinion or a point of view that might be different.... people are weird. BTW I shot and was hired as the underwater cameraman for an entire ARTE broadcast nature doc which I shot to the clients full satisfaction on a Panasonic GH5 Mii with the Ninja V shooting ProRes HQ 4K. Kinda jives with your remark that it is not always the camera that has the higher price point. I agree that if the camera is not for your work type don't buy it. Essentially what I heard from an interview with Blackmagic (Anthony Rodriguez and Dan May), the Pyxis was rushed to market with feature decisions based on a quick-to-market timeline. The Pyxis will still be Blackmagic's number one selling camera and they already know this. Dan May already hinted in the interview that more Pyxis models will be coming in 2025! I'm preordering the Pyxis and I'm very excited to get going with it this summer!

I would pair this camera with something like the Vaxis Atom A5 SDI monitor that has built in wireless transmission- gets round the lack of multiple video outputs very easily- you just need 3G SDI running from the camera to one device. The Vaxis Atom wireless stuff is by far the best budget wireless kit I've used- the latency and IQ is better than any other sub $600 systems I've tried.

I'll wait til the "Pro" version is released and BM gives us an articulating screen. I already have a strong feeling that the side screen placement for menu control isn't going to work for me from a functionality and physicality standpoint. Maybe BM will bring a future firmware update to their Video Assist monitors and allow for camera control on them, which would solve a lot of the design problems of this camera.

It's crazy how people cry for a box camera but don't want the hassle that comes with a box camera it's greatest strength is also it's greatest weakness it's modular meaning you have to build it up or break it down if your not shooting movies then yea this work flow is not ideal because it's designed to change based off what you need if you want a ready to shoot camera get a c300 or a fx6 those are designed for a specific purpose

I have the KX and have considered the PYXIS, but my reason for owning the KX is different to yours, and I have a couple of S5IIXs, which tick some of the boxes that the KX doesn't, so for MY setup, it makes sense to keep the KX for now. Everyone's setups and clients have different needs. It's ok that we don't all use the same exact cameras/lenses/tripods etc.lol

Since the release of Blackmagic's Cinema 2.5K all those years ago now, it has been easier to throw rocks at Blackmagic than allow it on the field of options. That is typically the case for "disruptors" that challenge (intentionally or not) the established order of things. Very capable cameras at generally unheard of price-points results in unwanted questions for everyone from other camera manufacturers to purchasers of other systems, and the honest answers to those questions are not comfortable. Whether they hit the mark or miss, Blackmagic routinely makes hardware and software that they believe we want and / or need - not the equipment they want at a price they need whereupon they will then tell us why we need it. That shouldn't qualify a company as a disruptor, but well...

Reading the internet for info after you've bought a camera or ordered one, is a bit like having a pain, and searching the internet for a self-diagnosis - you'll die of worry. People spend more time echoing 'experts' and the latest fads than they ever will making stuff; such is modern life. I too was a bit sceptical of that side screen; but it actually makes some sense when on sticks, for pulling your own focus, zoom and aperture; particularly for macro work and interviews. I wish my Ursa Broadcast G2's screen would flip back like that; my older shoulder mounts had it and it was useful at times. As you say, a 5" VA monitor would be a good fit for this cam; or saving up for the EVF - if it's anything like the one on my Ursa, it's a bargain. RS is made too much of these days - The Sony FX9 which is used in just about every TV show I work on these days - almost entirely hand held; is pretty 'bad' too and no one notices that and it never fails QC neither because of it. Hope you enjoy your Pyxis; I'm sure it'll be great.👍

People who wants IBIS in this camera might not like they might have to factor in a crop, alter a setting or two, and be more methodical in movements, but the the Gyro Data of the Blackmagic Cameras, Pocket 4K, 6K & 6K Pro, as well as the PYXIS now, are really great when utilized properly! Would be cool if it had IBIS as well, but Gyro Data is a more than worthy substitute by itself.

we have had fixed screens with "terrible" ergonomics on blackmagic cameras for years, i dont see why people think this one is the worst. original pocket had a tiny terrible screen, the 4k and 6k had a kinda dim screen, all of which were fixed on the back so if you had your camera on a too low or too high of an angle, you couldnt see it. yet people love these cameras. why would the pyxis be no different, you usually stand on the side of your tripod anyway when operating a camera, if its shoulder mounted and you look to your right, its all in your face ready to be used. to me the screen is a non issue and people who have issue with it, should just splurge on a different camera instead of complaining. The Zcam, Komodo, Kinefinity all have pretty useless screens built in to the body. Z Cam is often used in hollywood for its cool usecases "Build a bridge, youll be fine"
