according to plasterbrain the real meaning of the song is unknown, but she imagines somebody in love with a person in power, and witnessing that person commit murder. henceforth, they're silenced through love and blackmail. i'm guessing the chair referenced in the beginning is an electric chair, and the person in love was used as a scapegoat.

Theory about "Theories": The "story" of the song seems to be the wife/queen of a corrupt and murderous king (who became king through killing the old one and his heir) talking about his murderous ways (killing being referred to as "teaching that life isn't fair) and his apparent lunacy (shown by calling a doctor for him who wants to pit him in an institution) and him suggesting the queen teach him life isn't i.e. just kill him. She refers to fate as Mr. Universe, suggesting they were "hypnotised", perhaps into believing they'd be happy after taking the throne, which neither is due to the circumstances, and the queen relents on killing him to end the cruelty of his rule for the greater good ("how can *disaster* seem so divine?) how to get away with it (rehearsing the lines "I wasn't involved" and "it couldve been anyone, etc.) while acknowledging that she had a hand in encouraging his vicious ways with "every mistake you make is mine". Its very Shakespearean similar to "Macbeth", if Lady Macbeth had plotted to kill her husband instead of just commiting suicide from what they'd become. Its a very unique kind of thing to make a song about, if nothing else *(but it is catchy and charming as hell also)*

I never really delved into the lyrics, but seems more to me like the character singing is the concubine/lover of an heir to the throne who puts his ambitions well ahead and wraps her into an assassination plot. "When danger shows a sign and you leave me here to die, I'll rehearse all my lines just one more time," they either get caught by the police or she prepares for it. "I really don't know, I'm just not sure, he wasn't involved, could have been anyone," - she is willing to sacrafice herself for him, knowing he proably isn't worth it. Maybe the character is now older and reflecs on her past actions "Mr. Universe had us hypnotised," meaning she believed them to be star-crossed lovers to conquer the world, only to fall flat.

Ya know, this song kind reminds me of every single piece of Shakespeare I read in high school. I mean, ya got people sneaking around, lying to cover their ass, killing heirs, going crazy, the common people suffering because of some idiot, and possibly even domestic violence. I think pLasterbrain should rename this song to: Shakespeare in Under Four Minutes.

It's so interesting reading the comments after having listened this song for so long. I always thought it was about religion and the nature of the universe. People turning to religion, finding faith in religious teachings that lead them to expect disaster while being manipulated to give money and power to religious leaders, where the reality of life is that sometimes it's just not fair, and when that unfairness occurs, the religious leader leaves them without help while the followers simply believe the misfortune is God's design and lead themselves to more disaster as a result, not to mention plenty of other horrible acts committed by the religious leader along the way. It's interesting reading other interpretations that I never considered.

The lyrics in the description say disaster is so divine. Then this song is a disaster because damn it is divine
@c6rn6g2k1d8 жыл бұрын
Seems more like a song about how life in general can be traumatic for anyone at any given point. Fate can be a scary thing that can change at any moment, and that feeling of triumph turns into dread. And all you're left with is welcoming your own destruction because you don't want to live with the what results of your decisions, or you're willing to take the dive for someone else. The song might as well be saying that everything is preordained and that destiny is inescapable, and it's trying to give us some small measure of consolation.
@the1exnay7 жыл бұрын
Hmm, so my theories on theories: The first verse talks about how this person assassinated the king's son, and then left the speaker to get caught. In the following bit with overlapping singing she denies involvement. And it talks some of what sort of statement this sends. But of course he ends up king, sitting on the throne (chair) This can be an analogy for loads of different methods of tearing someone down for personal gain and abandoning friends once they're a liability. The mr. Universe bit is slightly harder to interpret. I see a few ways to do it but this is my favourite: Mr. Universe as reality personified. Hypnotised by it through escapism. Enjoying the pleasures without realising the risks. And then when it all went to shit you're asked if you still think it so great. Well, some do, still seeking, still pretending they're important. But we know better, they're but just the universe's concubine, to be fucked and maybe pleasured for a bit but unimportant As for the disaster being divine bit: i think of it as talking about how you can get stuck in a rut, or can be scared to take risks. But then as your current way of life is destroyed you can move on, perhaps enjoying the journey as well, towards something better. And she waits for bad fortune to make decisions for her, she knows what must be done but cant bring herself to go into the scary unknown until something makes staying still impossible. The bit about every mistake being mine is about her taking responsibility for other people's shortcomings in order to make them feel better. Blaming the disaster on her mistake despite it truly being someone else's The verse on mental illness doesnt seem to need much interpretation. It seems to be a commentary on how we treat mental illness, as criminals not people to help. How we know but dont care. And about how we should teach people to better handle the hardships of this cruel world by representing it as it truly is.
@FloraSora4 жыл бұрын
I know your comment is 2 years old at this point, lol, but I just wanted to point out, based on this song and Modal Shanghai's lyrics, it seems that the protagonist is clearly part of a secret relationship with this "man," and although it's clearly wrong, it's "divine" in every way... except for the fact that this guy isn't exactly the "Mr. Universe" everybody thinks he is. Easy.
@the1exnay4 жыл бұрын
FloraSora Modal shanghai seems to me to be more about a brief but beautiful casual relationship. Which forms nice contrast to nimbasa core talking about a longer, more frustrating, relationship where he's stopped trying. And then greedy gives an interpretation of what one could take from both stories, that it's greedy to want someone to love you I feel like theories is much more abstract at parts than those three other songs, and as such is harder to interpret. Like is it multiple separate stories? Or different perspectives on the same one? And how literal are some of these lines? And if it's not literal then what does "slaughtered the heir though he asked to be spared" mean? I'm not sure i know the answer to these questions. Or if they're knowable Anyway, thanks for sharing your interpretation
@FloraSora4 жыл бұрын
@@the1exnay Hmmm, I like how you dare to dig deeper. Carry on then! :D I need to re-listen to the rest of theories, so maybe your theories are more developed than mine; I just noticed a repeating theme of the protag messing around with these guys who are less than desirable.

Gryff I think it's about a girl who's fed up with her boyfriend/husband because he cheats on her, "Well rumor has it that the concubine did", acts like he's above everyone else even though he gained everything that he has through misdeeds, "Did you ever tell 'em how you wound up in that chair?", and just generally doesn't care about her, so she fantasizes about bad things happening to him,"How can disaster seem so divine?", "Why am I waiting on bad fortune?" and even killing him, then playing innocent "I'll rehearse my lines one last time", "I wasn't involved", "Could have been a knife".
