Value is different for each person- If it is that unicorn shoe and just works really well for someone that gets you out the door and keeps you excited about running without issues then price is worth it I think, regardless of what technology or the lack of it. I only have 20 miles in superblast and they are growing on me - they are expensive but so far I don’t feel I wasted money as I think I will be grabbing and using these much more often than my other similar priced plated shoes.

I bought a pair of Superblast at the very first morning that Asics put them on the shelf. First of all, I'm satisfied with Superblast. I have ran 3 times with Superblast, 6k easy run, 15k distance run and 30min treadmill run. Superblast is quite comfortable and stable when going up and down, lightweight and breathable. However, I'm afraid it's not quite friendly for people with narrow feet and low instep, like me, I'll recommend thick socks to them. Another surprise to me is that I got a little injury and haven't run more than 10km for about 2 months. I ran 15km on Sunday but I didn't feel uncomfortable or tiredness on Monday.

Thanks for the helpful review! Based on my conversations (in Tokyo, where Superblast has yet to be released), a lot of people who already have Novablast 3 seem to be wondering if the Superblast is different enough to add to rotation, or if this is more like an ~USD 80 upgrade that can help perform faster and maybe longer (?). Personally, I am considering getting one of them initially for longer, easy/slow runs, and it sounds like the Novablasts would be a better fit. Anyway, just my “2 yen” and appreciate the insight!

Great review. I just did the Dublin marathon in them. If you want a really fast AND comfortable shoe that will not destroy your calves and achilles - then I recommend them. what is most noticeable in them is that you recover from your long runs so much quicker and therefore you can train harder in the week. Dont let the price put you off as the gains outweigh it.

I have both Prime X Strung and now the SuperBlast. One comparison you didn't mention was the Strung has carbon rods, while the SuperBlast doesn't. I am an Asics guy, so shelled out for SuperBlast. I like it for a long run shoe. I wouldn't use it for anything else. Not a race shoe for me. I think if Asics priced it at $200 or below and sold it (Asics marketing has usually sucked, and they have improved, although the intro of this shoe wasn't great). Thanks for the comparisons. A very good and detailed video as always. I appreciate your honesty.

I also didn't mention that the Prime X Strung also has a heel plate or a second layer of carbon in the energy blades. The point is not the tech but the result of the tech. But I think you've reached the result that I think I lot of people who like racing with carbon would reach.

I'm eager to know what the running community makes of these new marathon trainers. Sometimes I want to run distances not too far off of the half marathon mark, but find that a daily trainer tends to be a little uncomfortable after around 15K. However, with raceday shoes, I feel you need to be on your toes so to speak, in order to feel the comfort that they provide at their intended pace, and sometimes you can run yourself out of that distance and end up calling it short. Would you say these new marathon trainers are a good balance between the two? A must have?

@@scottwoodcock2779 I too tend to feel it around 12 miles and more on LR’s when I don’t have enough support or cushion in a shoe. However, re: being on your toes, we older runners who exert the same effort but at a slower pace are not running on our toes-rather (ideally) midfoot, but 99.9% of runners do heel strike when they’re tired and/or running slow enough. Even the Kenyans. Likewise in the late miles of a marathon for we mortals. I’d love to know if the SuperBlast is better or worse for this scenario of LR’s at least, compared to say my NB 1080’s or the NovaBlast 3. Feedback welcome

Nice review and comparisons. I’m glad you’re up front about the brands. Unpopular opinion: I think sauconys lineup is overpriced (perhaps most brands). As for the ASICS superblast, it looks great. I’m still in the camp that asks does one really need a $200+ trainer when something like the ASICS noosa tri 14 works just as well for $130. Sure, the noosa doesn’t have the same foam, but I still can run 20 miles in it and the next day 11 miles in a different shoe. The new foams are great, but they are no substitute for strength training, decent diet, training, and sleep. If you get 700+ miles in this shoe then $220 doesn’t seem so bad.

This is a brilliant and original way to do a shoe comparison. You’ve managed to not make simple price the focus but rather used it as a unique way to avoid “just another shoe comparison” 😊I did try the SuperBlast at the CIM Expo and was impressed. I already have the Edge+ which I enjoyed for the HM relay, and have the Saucony Pro3 in a box with BOS in mind. If I bought the SuperBlast I’d be wanting to use it on my LR’s-which are going to include MP miles. I’m a midfoot striker (not as forward as you) but get wear in the same rear lateral spots first. I’m sure I heel strike when tired. Wondering if these would be good for this use case. About to break out my 1st NovaBlast ever, v.3. BTW, aren’t the laces on the SuperBlast instantly long? Also, did the “scratchy” upper material fray your socks?

I think one important point you forgot to touch on that hugely impacts value is durability. I personally have no intention of ever spending >$200 for a running shoe, but I think the Superblast would be the obvious choice for this use case (long run and marathon training companion) for anyone looking to spend ~$200 due to the much greater durability of FF Blast and FF Blast+ relative to ZoomX, Fuelcell, Hoka's EVA, and to a lesser extent Lightstrike Pro. I think that consideration puts the Superblast in much closer contention with the Alpha and Vaporfly even if those two are bought on sale, as the Superblast will probably provide MANY more solid miles before the midsole dies out. I agree that the two Nike options would be the better choice for someone who wants to race and train in the same shoe, though, provided they have deep pockets and are okay with dropping $200 very frequently.

I have to agree because with Saucony’s I wear through that same spot on the lateral rear touchdown point (Ko-the one you mention where you get wear, too) when the rest of the shoe is still like new. It starts as early as 50-75 mi and by 150-170 mi on the R shoe the Pebax midsole is naked on the edge. Saucony has even sent me replacement shoes. But I’m going to steer away from the brand because of this, although I have a pair of the Endo Pro3 designated for Boston if they pass the LR test. I hope that outsole material is stronger bc I know they changed it. Maybe Saucony’s make me supinate just enough more. This has happened with the Ride and every pair of Speeds I’ve had including the RunShield. NB, adidas (of course), Brooks and Asics do not have as ridiculously short lifespan in that place.

I use a wooden ice-cream stick (clean and dry) Also make sure the area of application is also clean (wash it with a brush) and dry completely. Another alternative you can try is Gorillla Tape which is a very strong ahesive tape with fabric in it. Cutting the tape in the required shape is actually quite difficult. It is very sticky and strong. They sell it at Home Depot and similar places (probably on Amazon as well) I did use this under my Alphafly v1 in my last marathon. It reduced the wear but did not last the whole 26 miles. There was a small hole in the tape at the end of the marathon but definitely reduced the wear. Still, it is an option. I will also explore the installation of real durable rubber when the strip is gone on my Alphafly. I cannot get myself throw out the shoe just because a particular area is wearing out. It will continue to be a great training shoe.

I think they are probably a good fit for a specific kind of "gate cycle" (long strides) and I must say when it gets under 0c, they are not that great because they get stiffer and they are so breathable, my feet are freezing. I agree with all but the SC Trainer as 180 felt like the most appropriate price for this shoe, maybe 185 just like the Nb’s. I got my SC Trainers on BF for 50% at my local running store, and obviously for $90, it can’t really be beat but even at full price if I already have a race day shoe, the Superblast doesn’t make much sense for the price.

I love my Superblast! At the moment I’m in that state that I want to use it for every run so I need to “force” myself to rotate between my shoes 😊 And thank you for mentioning the issues with rocks getting stuck. Most reviewers skip this part and for me that are running a lot on gravel this is very important. For example Glideride 3 and Endorphin Pro 3 is almost impossible to use due to all the rock collecting. With that being said, I actually have less issues with Superblast than those mentioned, but I don’t have that many miles in Superblast yet.

Well done analysis. At the end of the day, it remains subjective based on your goals. I chose the New Balance SC Trainer because I prefer a long distance cruiser, prioritizing comfort. It's also great at slower and recovery paces. In that sense, what is better?

@Lev and Martha Polyakin-Aarons it's possible. I love the more v4 for recovery runs but prefer the slightly firmer but bouncy SC Trainer for long runs. If you are looking for soft and squishy but the more is too more, try the Novablast 3.

Interesting way to compare - I cant make the comparison but I have loved the SC trainer (probably my favorite shoe of 2022) I find myself reaching for it all the time so its hard for me to feel that anything could make it feel overpriced especially compared to a $220 shoe. Howevere I find myself often feeling similar to you on reviews so I may have to give this a go. I am curious if you saw Ginger Runner's comparison between the Superblast and the Novablast 3 as well

When Nike "air" first appeared in the late 1970's it was the Tailwind which I got to try on in a shopping mall type store. It was "retailing" for about $100 dollars which was fairly astronomical then so I passed. But I scored a pair at a running specialty store which had been "returned" for around 50 and I soon found out why. The Tailwind was the worst designed show ever, a rigid footplate with a small air pad under the heel. KInd of narrow, the designer must have been a canoe inthusiast. I bailed quickly, can't remember what happen to the shoes, but my knees are still factory made which would not be the case if I'd continued with the "Tailwind." Anyway, Mr. Kofuzi, I as a lifetime runner I think that you have the best job in the world.

For price and sale, depending on region and time, vaporfly and alphafly are my choice over superblast. However I would pick a non plate shoe for training rather a plate for race day. Too much plated running weekly is not suited for my mechanics. I had too much injury from the past. I think if you comparing rrp many shoe are over price. I am certainly not a rep person. Time will tell when distributor discounts this to reflect market price expectation.
