Brilliant. For so many years I've wondered about the history of the old house in Kogarah, Sunnyside. I've often stopped to admire it and pondered on the view of days long ago. Thank you for your wonderful channel.

Thanks for your comment, it really is very encouraging. We have always thought that Kogarah was one of our better videos, but until comparatively recently we were disappointed with its number of views. This in spite of our being members of Kogarah Historical Society. We suspect that those views have increased following someone posting our video on Rocky Point Peninsula on a Sans Souci Facebook site. We don’t personally post on KZbin, but we are more than happy that others should commend our videos in this way. Our current wisdom regarding views of our videos is that suburbs which have been taken over by either Universities or Hospitals, have less of a population, which identify with the area. I remains to be seen how true this is. However many of our viewers are simply nostalgic for the place where they spent their childhood. One such now lives in French’s Forest, but fondly remembers not only his youth in Arncliffe but also attending Kogarah High School.

Thank you for your service. I found this video while looking up the pronounciation of Kogarah. I hope you keep up the good stuff.

This brings back a memory to me, which stretches back to the early 1970. I am English, (though an Australian citizen). My brother having married an Australian had settled in Kogarah. Technology being not what it is today, communication was entirely by air mail. Never having heard Kogarah pronounced, we referred to him as living at Kog ah rah, it wasn’t until I came out to join them, that I learned the pronunciation as Kog rah. My Australian wife and I sometimes have mild disputes regarding some words in the script for our videos. I’m still struggling to get the emphasis correct with “Penrith.”The challenge for her is Belvoir- in English that’s Beaver and I think you’ll find Beauchamp is Beecham. Long standing residents of Tempe will always recognise a newcomer when they pronounce Lymerston street, with the first syllable rhyming with time, when they will sound it to rhyme with dim. We would like to thank you for your encouraging words.

I went to Sunday School in the original Presbyterian Church which served as a Church Hall to the New church next door. I recall taking the trolley bus to Sans Souci with my mother.

Thanks for your comment. The Creator of the Kogarah video, didn’t attend your Sunday School, but she did travel on the Sans Souci trolley bus. We are also members of Kogarah Historical Society, which on their web site have an enormous number of photographs of the area. You may like to share your knowledge of some of the photographs.

An excellent KZbin channel. Thank you for providing such interesting history information. (I hope you can include some suburbs on the Northern Beaches one day.)
@stpeterscooksriver18733 жыл бұрын
Surprised that your interest is in the Northern Beaches but you have found yourself looking at a video on Kogarah. That is not a criticism, but rather an indication, that we are still working out what brings people to our channel. As for a videos on some of the Northern Beach Suburbs yes we are hoping to cross the harbour some time, but as you have probably worked out we are moving through connected suburbs. The only area we are avoiding is the city of Sydney. Enough has been written and produced about it. I for one, am appalled at the dearth of short stories, that feature Sydney suburbia, and the same could be said for verse. Miles Franklin wrote 'All that Swagger,' whilst living in Carlton but it isn't about Carlton. I digress. The last time we visited the Northern Beaches was to the Quarantine Station on the day the area got locked down. On the positive side we have a good friend who lives there. No time frame, but we will try to get there.

@@stpeterscooksriver1873 Thanks for your reply. I love local history in general and I chose Kogarah at random. The only reason I am interested in the Northern Beaches, is because I live on the Northern Beaches. Frenches Forest to be exact, which also has an interesting history. There are so many suburbs to tackle in all directions. Wherever you choose to focus upon, will be interesting viewing.

With St George hosp....why does everyone show the building built in the early 70s....no one shows the 2 storey that was actually built decades before....or the extension that was done or the weatherboard builing that was D and E ward....that was close to the nurses home and no one shows the nurses home...apparently it had the oldest lift in aus...so they said !..... it was bloody old i used it !
@stpeterscooksriver18736 ай бұрын
We chose to show the St. George Cottage Hospital built in 1894 because it is the original hospital and ancestor of the dominant feature of the present day Kogarah landscape, that is St. George Hospital. Other photographs of the hospital in the intervening years can be found by searching for St. George Hospital and clicking on “images” rather than “all” on your computer. Hope this is helpful.

@@annehat4833 I think I now know what your problem is, and it’s one that the Creator of our video is also challenged by. The average time spent making one video, is one month. In that time, relevant books, and the internet are substantially researched. The substantial problem is that many articles, particularly from those purporting to be from “historians” predate “Trove” the excellent collection of Australian newspapers from the past. There are many other resources, now on line, which are easily searched. Gone are the days when trawling through microfiche was one of the few resources. Let us be sympathetic to all those who in the past attempted to preserve our history. The challenge is that much of it can be found on the internet, and its truth can be verified by more contemporary, that is newspaper reportage and other articles written at the time. It is those accounts not only found in newspapers that the Creator of our videos goes to last of all for verification. There is in one suburb’s history, accounts of someones valiant attempt to alter council regulations regarding bathing. Curiously that person doesn’t get a mention in newspapers of the time. The suburb wasn’t at the forefront of changing the regulations, and the person’s name only appears in the newspaper seven years later. I hope this is helpful in understanding your frustrations and helpful to all our reader who may have experienced the same.

I think they built the shops above kogarah station in 1979
@stpeterscooksriver18733 жыл бұрын
Sorry for not replying to your comment sooner. We based our video comment on the Kogarah Town Centre on this, from theleader.com. ‘Kogarah Town Centre was described as “the most depressing shopping centre in the world” in a media report on its sale at a loss in 2009. But, ahead of its opening on November 18, 1975, the centre was promoted as “a place that you will adore”. The building containing 47 shops was constructed above the train station at a cost of $7 million. Shoppers who flocked to the gala opening were given the chance to win a new Holden Gemini. They were entertained by popular 2UW breakfast announcer Malcolm T. Elliott, Humphrey B. Bear, the Super Flying Fun Show, fashion parades, and a baby show. I shall say no more.

@@fookriver Kevin, one of the factors we take into consideration when deciding to make a video on a suburb, is not simply the suburb, or the people that now live their, but also we consider, the people who once lived there, and also the suburbs they travelled to for what other activity. The last one we have tended to see as for work. One of the factors we see as not contributing to the number of views, are the suburbs that have been taken over by, in modern times, universities and hospitals. It may be early days yet to say we expected so many more viewers for our video on Manly, for we thought it fitted quite well all our parameters. Do tell us next, that you spent some of your leisure hours, on the beaches of the Rocky Point Peninsula. Next video up is Cronulla, which just might be of interest.
