The biggest surprise is the fact you can have so much joy and positive energy to share while you know: If ONE snare hit goes wrong... a 7000€ mic will be smashed in less than a second 😂 I'm sure there are good techs out there to repair and maintain all this gear... but still, recording some shitheavy black metal on the top of this must be a pretty anxious and deep experience 🤣🤘🔥 Huge sound. Thank you! I love Ribbon mics. In a digital world they really warm things up. That and tubes anywhere you can use them. I love using a pair of ribbons in Blumlein but off axis in front of the kit about 6" higher on the stand than the snare to taste, and about 3-5 feet in front of the kit depending on the room. One capsule faces the outside edge of the snare closer to the high hat and the other capsule faces the floor tom. Looks like a cross but more like an "X" shape. I have tried this with inexpensive Ribbon mics from Shiny Box, and really nice Coles 4038s. Coles sound better. This set up gives me a great overall drum sound of the entire kit. It takes a bit of adjusting to taste but once you find the sweet spot it's awesome. For your kick on this track, you could have put a ribbon mic outside the kick drum on the beater side for capturing the attack instead of the inside one, and the one you put outside the front of the kick, AEA A440 did sound amazing. Well done.

We use Ribbons inside the kick all the time. Certainly it needs to handle the SPL, but if you're worried about the air blasts, there are plenty of ways to diffuse it. It's a GREAT option, even for metal.
@KohleAudioKult Жыл бұрын
Oh really? Which one do you use and how do you protect them?
@Twobodiesofwater Жыл бұрын
@@KohleAudioKult Have a bunch. Our Shure KSM313 mics can handle things inside with no considerations (and the back side has a nice top end boost), and the Samar VL37 pair both work great with with either a wind sock or at an angle. We even have an R44 that works great on kicks with no res head, but it needs a REALLY high headroom pre.
@tomnaumann2104 Жыл бұрын
@@KohleAudioKult Yeah, the ribbons in the Shure ribbon mics are made of a proprietary material that is supposed to be fairly indestructible. The KSM 353 was actually designed as a purpose kick mic to sound like a mix of a dynamic and U47. FYI, before Shure purchased the company, the KSM 313 and KSM 353 were originally manufactured by Crowley and Tripp with the model names Naked Eye and El Diablo, respectively, and you might still find some C&T marketing materials online. When I last looked about 5 years ago it was easier to find marketing material on the C&T than the Shure versions.

This sound could work on some Doom Metal, and any other rock genre. Ribbons don't always mean "vintage", and I don't think they get as much use as they deserve anymore. Great job with mic placement. Nice warm but full sound. Organic. I get tired of condensers all over the place. I appreciate the fact that you let us hear each mic, so we can hear the differences. @tomnaumann2104 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, keep in mind the R88 is actually two microphones in one body. The R84 is the single mic version and its price is comparable to other “medium priced” ribbons like Royer, Mesanovic, and Shure KSM313.

@KohleAudioKult Жыл бұрын
So you just line up the mics and blend them?
@GloveBunniesVideos Жыл бұрын
@@KohleAudioKult Pretty much. It's weird how they capture different elements of the sound so they don't conflict. You get a real full sound without needing saturation or EQ.
@yoco93cro Жыл бұрын
What do you mean that there are no phase issues?
@GloveBunniesVideos Жыл бұрын
@@yoco93cro Normally when you have two similar mics recording the same sound in different settings, you'll get phase cancellation issues. When you have a condenser and a ribbon mic, the method for collecting the sounds is completely different, so phase isn't as much as an issue, in my experience.
@yoco93cro Жыл бұрын
@@GloveBunniesVideos I think the only thing that matters in that case is that the mics are placed coincident, I don't think microphone type can have such a influence as resulting waveforms can either be in phase or not (or at various degrees). Maybe because ribbons usually yield "darker" sound and therefor sound different opposed to condenser mics, less cancelation occurs because the recordings aren't the same

Hi, I like this experiment A LOT!!! Really good drum sounds! Bloody well done! The snare microphone was the biggest surprise for me. It really made the snare sound exactly how I want a snare to sound. WOW! Sadly, I don't have 7K lying round so... Other ribbons will have to do. :) Cheers! BR, M

Brave! I broke my modded fathead with a bass drum. Just the wind from a heavy hitter via a bass drum tunnel can break a ribbon let alone hitting one with a stick.
@drumtours2226 Жыл бұрын
It helps a lot to position the microphone at an angle so that the wind does not hit the ribbon directly. It also helps to place a pop filter in front of it. Recently I even saw two pop filters in front of a 44.

The R88 definitely is a great mic. Even watching the video it sounded like listening to the drumset live in the room. Very natural sound and stereo perception on that one. I didn't really like the bassdrum sound, to be honest - don't know if it was the bassdrum itself or the in-shell mic. The ribbon on the outside sounded great, though, so probably the D6 killer doesn't kill the D6 for me. 😅 (Or the V-Kick, which I personally like best)
